Psalm 22

Overall Psalms 22 has Syllables: 615; Longest recitation: 14; Tenor: f# 21.46%; Ornament density: 11.1%; Average phrase length: 9.4.

Note that the ole-veyored is easy to miss in verse 26. It seems to be needed in verse 25, but there is no such cadence in that verse. Always breathe after the word that completes the ole veyored.

Verse 25 presents a different issue. It is long -- 20 syllables and it has an accent sequence paz, ill, rev, that occurs only 9 times in the Scripture -- all in the poetry books of course. The combination will slow anyone down, so take a breath after the revia. The revia sometimes acts like the zaqef-qatan in the prose books.

I have not trained my program at this point to mark all possible breaths. I know there are some programs that mark every type of pause. First, I have not determined that the traditional pauses are justified. For example there is a potential breath after the munah, but no one could agree that a munah requires a breath or indeed any such pause.

Also there are technological reasons why I cannot make changes. Mostly it is a matter of time. I may not understand what time is, but I feel its passing... and it seems I have a job yet to do. If I live long enough, I may end up doing it twice. Once here on the blog and then hopefully I will find a method to transfer the blog to e-books. At least my cascading style sheets are compatible.

The performer / arranger is always at liberty to express the text as heard. As in traditional plainsong, one should never throw away any syllable. There is a description of Haïk-Vantoura's practice in the link to her Choudens Editions. E.g. See her functional guidelines (in French and English) here.

Psalms 20 to 22 are connected.
