Technical Notes on Grids in html and CSS

It seems that there are some limitations in grids that I missed. I am still not sure how to code around them.

The padding for the top level grid in the Concordance page seems to fail for Chrome and Iphone, but has no problem in the WS3 test area. There is occasional horizontal truncation of the letters within a grid break. Fortunately this is not a show stopper since it is relatively easy to hover and click the truncated link to see what you've missed.

The columns of a grid appear to have a maximum length. I ran into it in the Person subdomain of the Names domain. All the entries past the maximum were overprinted on the Chrome page. I had to update it manually since I produce the grid from a single SQL statement and it is inconvenient at the moment to encode this into a function, but I may if I have to process updates many times. It is curious that I have only 3 words in my domain of named signs! There must be more words related to signs hidden somewhere, probably under Covenant.

I have seven high-level domains:  Grammar 24.82 of all words%, Culture 20.28%, Creation 15.61%, Names 12.57%, Engagement 11.19%, Promise 10.13%, Trouble 5.39%. I have deliberately kept the subdomain names unique, so the domains are a simple set of handles without any functional requirement.

Grids in general seem to process faster than tables, but I could not avoid the blank line at the beginning of a multi-column nested set of grids. Maybe it's less complicated than I think and I could simplify my thought processes. It turns out that I can put a table into a multi column grid - much simpler for this post at least. And also for the glossary page itself. After some false starts, yes.

These are the subdomain name and count of distinct lemma forms (reduced glosses) by domain and subdomain (as measured 2020.12.26) ordered by count descending. It is easy to see that the Person category count is almost twice as high as as the preposition gloss count and location count. I might have solved this problem by subdividing the subdomain. At the beginning I was considering subdividing the Person Names by role, Father, Mother, Son, Daughter etc but I soon gave that up because it is multi-valued and I didn't want to have another table. I realized how quickly this project could be derailed if I failed to focus on the language in the text itself.

Status

My Twitter and Facebook friends are missing out on the day to day drama of this reading project. So here's a summary.

As of July 1, we will have passed the transient milestone, 811 done 118 to go. A similar palindrome occurs every 99 chapters in a sequential romp through 929 chapters.

I do not know how many errors there are in what I have done, but I know this. I have made changes to over 792 chapters so far this month when considered a word at a time. These may be a change in gloss or a change in stem, usually simplifying the resulting glossary, or a change in the semantic domain to which I have assigned this word.  A semantic domain is a bit like a chart of accounts in the sense that it characterizes a word. Some words are content and some are container.

Container:
Grammar is the container of a language. In this case grammatical words constitute over 25% of the puzzle pieces. That is just over 75,800 words in the Hebrew canon. Names constitute another 12% about 36,800 words. I don't fully know the answer until I finish. But it's probably close given that we are about 85% complete.

Content:
Besides these two, Grammar and Names, I have divided the rest into (totally subjective) broad categories: Promise, Trouble, Creation, Culture, and Engagement, 5 broad categories for the content of the Bible.

It is not time for a complete report on my findings. I am still pondering how I will do that. I have experimented with the glossary lists at my other blog. It is incomplete and incoherent at present. My problem is reducing a dynamic interactive coherent environment that I work in using a database to a series of flat files with hyperlinks. And make it interesting!

Subdivisions:
These categories are subdivided - so Grammar includes:
  • Particles (13K), 
  • Prepositions (25K), 
  • Pronouns - stand-alone (14K) excluding the enclitic (since the enclitic is part of another word - and these counts are for words - the smallest division of the puzzle that one can pick up at one time. I have kept the prepositional enclitics, ך ב ל as stems to allow for the times when all components of the word are the sticky bits and there is effectively no stem.)
  • Questions (1,675 - excluding enclitic ה),
  • Exists (977 - excluding enclitic שׁ),
  • Modifiers (5,951), and
  • Negatives (6,352).
Names I have subdivided into Persons (15K), People (1,718), Mountains (32), Months (26), Locations (8,777), God (10K), Feasts (70), Sticks (4), and Rivers (309). And I thought I was keeping it simple! (I was going to do male, female, monarchs, prophets, etc but I abandoned such detail quickly as requiring too much maintenance and yielding too little benefit.)

The broad benefit is to isolate anomalous glosses that seem out of place, to raise questions of derivation, related senses, and so on.

The five content categories are discretely divided - all without named overlap. A given stem can fall into several categories but only one at a time. I will spare you the details but their subdivisions are between 15 and 22 each. This gives me a division of the puzzle into 111 classes of word (at present), each class on its own quite amenable to analysis. For a puzzle with over 300,000 pieces, any one of which can have multiple possible sides to it, this extra imposition on the whole gives me a lever to find anomalous readings from my work over the past 5 years.

Another analogue (besides puzzle) for the effort is the marathon. Something has moved me to stick with this until it is done, whatever that means. It may be my own character or it may be the character of my upbringing both distant and near in time, or it may be the character of the information in the text that has been loved, hated, used and abused over the centuries, by church and state alike (as we have recently seen). My running of this marathon is in its last laps and I appear to have had a kick available to me the past 6 months.

You can see the kick in this graph, but - I do note that there are obstacles in these final laps. At times one has to go back and repeat a lap. Sometimes I look at a guess the computer offers to me, and I say, Good grief. Where did I get that from? I have several tools that allow me to see individual words and words in their context so I can find the spot and check my rationale and do some corrections if needed.

Leviticus 23

I think I have settled the classes of sacrifices (for now). They are almost all mentioned in this chapter. (The word for endowments,  מתן, is a bit of a surprise. As 'gift', I have seen it only as a bribe. I would have expected מנחה here. מתן is also glossed as waist or loins.)

אשׁ an offering by fire, or more commonly 87% of the time, it's just fire.
זבח is the regular word for altar, offer, and sacrifice.
כליל a whole offering .
כפר a cover-offering, or cover-price, or cover. Possible puns include crock, lion cub, frost, and henna. It is also the root for mercy seat. Atonement is the traditional English rendering in the context of offering.
מנחה a gift.
נדב a freewill offering. The same letters are the root for prince, and the word may be simply willing.
נוף a wave offering, also brandish, elevate, sprinkle, wave.
נסך a libation offering, also molten metal, molten image, spill out.
עלה a burnt offering, also ascend, bring, come or go, each with the idea of coming up, bringing up, going up, also leaf and trim, as in trimming lamps.
קרב an oblation, also simply approach, bring near, come near, draw near, close combat, near, nearby, within.

oops, forgot the peace offerings (שׁלם), and the sin offerings (חטא) ... In both these cases the gloss offering is added to the regular gloss (sin / peace) based on the context. [also must deal with the offering I have simply called a contribution, from רום]

This list is now 'together' in my set of domains. [It is short enough that I could probably include other ritual actions like the actions of daubing (נתן) and dashing (זרק) of blood and incense (ק+ר).] It is also incomplete. Undoubtedly some words not yet translated are attached to the wrong stem and therefore also to the wrong domains, but they will turn up eventually.

I spent some time on this in the past few days. It is an idea for additional control over concordance and over getting a handle on language, particularly the words in the canon. These words within my subdomain of OFFER occur with the frequency shown in the doughnut graph. I could spend a whole lifetime on this study, obviously. I haven't put much functionality into the domain-subdomain concept yet since my glossary is still emerging and will be in flux for some time to come. I will do a number of posts if I can on my methods and software. I am sure other people have comparable tools. I keep asking the question, Does language really work this way? Can I subject it to such mechanics?
There are many other things summarized in this chapter: feasts, Sabbaths, conclaves, convocations, appointed times and so on. 

Sorry for the arcane morrow but I had to distinguish this usage of אהר from בקר morning. And there aren't many synonyms for morning in English.

Isaiah 9

As previously noted, the famous passages are different when a concordant set of glosses is used. The question remains of course whether the concordance is sufficient to the task. At times it is not. Here however, as in many KJV and other translations, the Christian influence is too pronounced and Christians cannot read the text without understanding how Jesus himself would have read it, but rather reading Jesus into it where he does not belong and failing to see how he does belong. In a word, it is with his ear and in his deed that we are to live, not in our own heads, making things up about him. This is no easy task. I am more comfortable at my computer playing at words than confronting a righteous taxi driver who takes up 5 parking slots while he lets off one handicapped person.

Each to its kin will show no pity! (v 18 below)

In verse 2 (verse numbers differ by 1 from English versions) I have used what is written rather than what is read (which sounds the same anyway - lo vs lo). What is written (לו=its) makes sense. What is read (לא=not) is confusing. Not that this text should not be confusing. Sometimes it is.

Here frequently, there is a singular pronoun (he or it) referring back to the people. In English I have let it stand sometimes as plural indicating the many, and sometimes as singular indicating a corporate view of the people. For we are not isolated individuals though we are legion. If you can read this, there are millions of others who have helped you from rocket scientists and satellite technicians to internet inventors and programmers - all those people 'behind the screen' that manipulate the photons that reach your eye. We don't need cathode ray tubes to hold them any more, but just look behind your flat screen. They are still there.

There are a number of hapaxes in this chapter. Each one is always a challenge especially if I find them in a semantic domain that is already full of similar words. Combust is an example below. (Shows as a spelling error! But I am only going to use it once of course.)

REB is quite good in this passage. Except for the gloss threatens in the refrain where I have stretched out. Why should the translator impose the 'meaning' when the context does not demand that conclusion? Surely it is as (more) likely that the hand is stretched out to be grasped as the means to life.

and his title will be Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty Hero, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

משרה (dominion) is only used here in this verse and the next - derived from another rarely used word but perhaps related to Israel, ישר אל. I could use this word ...

When it comes to rulers, nobility, chiefs, princes, sultans etc, I have untangled some of the overlapping strands of tradition but at some expense to my sanity. One day I will figure out the best way to display my selections.

Compromises in concordance

I'm 1/3 through and I have concordance rules that I have broken for various reasons:
  • acrostics take precedence over concordance,
  • there are some legitimate homonyms,
  • some gadget usage is idiomatic in both guest and host language,
  • sometimes I don't push the derived root to the limit,
  • some words are always distinguished with a preposition, e.g. offer up vs offer
  • some words in English are so generic in sense that distinguishing them is too awkward in the host language. Go and come, or put are good examples - see below.
  • prepositions are problematic, period. No escape. Some depend on verb usage or are explicit with the verb. Here bias will creep in to any reading. 
  • Some of the errors I have made I do not yet see. The matching of English roots is as tricky as Hebrew and I have not made the English roots explicit. One day I may have to verify (with a software solution) that for example, held and hold are not overlapping. The example is only one of many hundreds. 
These are the roots I have compromised on at the moment. This is pretty short list, folks. I doubt that anyone's list is this short after a 1/3 reading. This list does not represent the multiple English glosses that may be used for one Hebrew root. (In case you were wondering).

Animals in the Bible

Help me out here, some of these things are not like the others. Can you find them? This first one is easy. I have bolded the first few errors that I see, can you see others?

The errors might be spelling, or the gloss is not an animal of creation, or what else. Eventually I will be able to list all the glosses I have used and all my compromises by domain and sub-domain. At the moment I have 129 distinct combinations for 3768 distinct roots. About 30 each. And I have about 8,583 distinct glosses - that is too many because as you can see, I am including singular and plural, and so on.

The semantic range of giving

I have a pattern of assignment of gloss that is evolving in my reading of the Hebrew Scriptures. A gloss is not a translation. Defining anything is difficult. I would rather call my 'translation' at this time 'a reading' of Scripture. It's not an opinion because I have a host of opinions and I don't necessarily want to be ruled by them. Some of my opinions are unruly. In 'reading' and reporting I want to open the faces of the texts to reflect their many facets. There are many readings. When I am finished, it will be a translation and I hope it retains the ability to be read and to reflect many faces.

The pattern is at the moment as follows:
  • A Hebrew stem can be reflected in many different English glosses.
  • An English gloss should represent only one Hebrew stem.
This is not a one-to-one relationship. Some words have one gloss throughout, but most words do not. What I am doing is striving for a one-to-many relationship. Exceptions.
  • Prepositions and conjunctions are fluid and contextual in both languages. Subtlety required.
  • Homonyms in English must allow for multiple Hebrew stems.
  • Helping verbs in English are allowed as freely required for grammar.
  • An English gloss + preposition is considered distinct from the English gloss alone.
  • Word games may take precedence over these rules of concordance.
So what do you do when give means take, or give means put, or give means set up?

There's the rub - it lies in the little word 'means'. I do not translate for 'meaning' if that means 'demeaning' or simply selecting the middle value or being mean. The 'meaning' of a text is in the relationship set up, given, from reader to reader, from one unspeakable to another. I seek to perceive many possible 'meanings' by preserving the patterns that I learn as I read more and more.

When I'm stuck, what I do is search until I decide that an English homonym or exception will need to be defined to my algorithm to allow the exception in some cases. So give can be take as in 1 Samuel, 'Do not take your maidservant as the face of a daughter of worthlessness,'

And give can be yield, and there are several others at the moment, though how long some of the rare ones will last is moot. Sometimes I look back at the list and wonder if it should stand. But I try at all costs to avoid a many-to-many situation of source stem to gloss, because that simply loses any if not all discipline, and the reading becomes too subject to my face only.

This self-justifying thought was produced as I approach the creation of the tabernacle and the ark. (I am going to call Noah's 'ark' something else - big boat maybe.) Here I am talking about the ark that is the intimate presence of God with the people. The language is delicate and the rules are like a father showing his child how to make something. Not a bossy know-it-all father either.
וְנָתַתָּ֖ אֶל־הָאָרֹ֑ן
אֵ֚ת הָעֵדֻ֔ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֶתֵּ֖ן אֵלֶֽיךָ
And you will yield to the ark,
the testimony that I will yield to you.

The primary gloss for נתן is give. Is this gifting, to yield to us the 'testimony'? Is it our gift to yield the tables of the law to the box under the mercy seat?

Law is then yielded to mercy and compassion. (Now that is subversive.)

There are of course many other aspects of reading and reporting at this stage that are equally difficult.
  • The tense in which a verb is expressed is moot. Almost anything goes in poetry and also in prose. The basic rules of course are observed, but there are many exceptions. English and Hebrew each have a host of possibilities in tense, aspect, mood. It has to do with telling the story or allowing the story to have its provocative and subversive impact. Often it is a matter of stepping back from the obvious. It is a political game of love.
  • Neither language has equality of gender at its base. Genders are of course not equivalent in all respects, but legally the masculine may include the feminine when no other singular allows representation. I often use 'it' as an inclusive personal pronoun, but I am far from consistent. Grammatical gender, e.g. the feminine noun, is not a feature of English, but it is of Hebrew and the feminine particularly can represent metaphor (like the boat in Jonah who 'was reckoning she was a wreck'). The degree to which language is play must be considered. Metaphor is unavoidable of course.
When I have the computer assign glosses automatically, the algorithm takes this precedence:
  • assign the glosses from read to unread sections by phrase, beginning with 6 in a row and reducing progressively to 2 in a row. As the assignment is made, correct the stem and semantic domains in the unread section.
  • for single words in Hebrew, assign the gloss only for matching word and stem and semantic domains, preferring first from the same chapter, then from the same book, then any book with the exception of Daniel (Aramaic) and the chapters that are acrostics.
So far the algorithm stats are improving each time I run it. Right now the complete unknowns have reduced over the last 6 weeks from over 75,000 to nearly 60,000. The knowns are now over 72,000, and the knowns if I include guesses by repeated phrases are over 107,000. That leaves 65% of the Hebrew 'words' remaining.  (Hebrew words are more often than not English phrases because Hebrew is an enclitic language. I.e. its components stick together to form a lexical word).

For interest, this is the current list of phrases and their count, which arise from the word נתן in my data. It could use a few tweaks.
