Isaiah 25

A short chapter, a quick read but not without questions. Like what is happening to Moab? Positive or negative? And whose hands are indicated in verse 11? What is this clutch over the people and the spilling out in verse 7? Hmm - no rest in verse 12.

Constructing a word by word text

I am wondering (again) how to present the information in the text and how the pieces of each verse are used and interpreted in their context.
Ezekiel 31 Fn Min Max Syll
וַיְהִ֗י בְּאַחַ֤ת עֶשְׂרֵה֙ שָׁנָ֔ה בַּשְּׁלִישִׁ֖י בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ

ויהי and it was באחת -- עשׂרה in the eleventh שׁנה year בשׁלישׁי the third of באחד on the first לחדשׁ of the month היה happened דבר the word of יהוה Yahweh אלי to me לאמר saying
Ezekiel 13.1 music
This is just an experiment with one verse. I have everything in the data including the music, but the preparation of the above is not a slam-dunk.
  1. The conversion of words to a sentence means there is a 1 to many relation in the join of the initial and final text to the individual words. Here I have used a join of the music in text form to produce the first row of the table (but suppressing most of the music). To this I have added the interlinear rows. I have used HTML features to reduce the interlinear to one table row.
  2. To include the music, I must use an image.
My individual word data does not have the music by word. That was probably a mistake, but at the beginning of the project 12 years ago, I knew nothing of the music and I would have been buried - I almost was buried just by the consonants, let alone vowels or accents. I had to fight one struggle at a time.

While I can produce a single verse image in a minute or two, that is too slow for doing the whole bible, (estimated 47 8-hour days). All the music is available but not so easily seen in the context of a single verse. Only an image gives the relationship of accent to word. The unique accent sequence for Ezekiel 13.1 is e rev,C qad,z-q,g# B ^A f g# f e. It is useful for comparing music in an algorithm, but not for singing.

In addition, it would be nice to have a list of stems used in the verse, and for each stem, where else one might want to look for its usage and what additional glosses are used. This is a lot of potential output so must be partitioned or reduced in some way. The 10 unique stems for the 12 words of Ezekiel 31:1 ignoring the same stem used in a different semantic domain, produce 111 rows of possible glosses used in 11,915 verses.

Every time I do this I discover errors and impossibilities. These are the 10 stems and the 111 rows.

אחד another (11) first (69) once (11) other (19) several (2) single (7) singly (1) specific (2) thing (3) unity (1) untranslated (5)

Note - eleven isn't quite that simple. [Nothing in natural language ever is] Unlike English eleven takes two words and there are two distinct ways of saying it (אחת עשרה or אשׁתי עשרה). I have a number of routines that deal with consecutive words but in this exercise I did not use them, and it turns out that I haven't been exactly consistent in my data coding. When I have two Hebrew stems for one gloss, one of the Hebrew words might be marked as untranslated or I might have included a connector like 'and' even if it was part of the ignored stem - phooey! [Data coding is critical. High level errors like the failure to distinguish metheg from silluq in Unicode lead to the inability of a program to make some types of decision.]

I have also had to ignore the domain grammar-preposition. If I don't remove prepositions from the glosses, I get 292 rows - and 111 was already too many. Perhaps omitting entirely words that are only used for the base Hebrew grammar would be a good idea. If I omit prepositions, the rows reduce to 103. If I omit names, they reduce to 100, the verses reduce to 7,734. If I remove speaking, and the very common היה, the rows reduce to 61 and the verses to 1,861. So the strategy will have to be to identify the very common words in the language and take them as given. This runs the risk of losing track of the glue... But there we are - we don't want to be stuck.

Genesis 45

Verses 6 and 7, for פלט everywhere, glosses related to secure have been adequate. נצל is deliver for me. Both JB and KJV get the word save in here as a helping verb for חיה, live. JB gets in the word race. Such a suggestion is completely out of context culturally and scientifically. Is it in the land or in the earth? The word occurs in each verse. Does it change its sense? No. What Israel has is security in the land of Egypt.

In the narrative time, there is nothing anticipated in the text about ultimate salvation or deliverance. In the analogue of the story, something that can be 'read in' everywhere within the Bible, the 'chosen', the 'firstborn', has security in the world - for a purpose, as Joseph notes here. We can imagine our relationship to God throughout the arch of the Biblical story. The people are in the world, Egypt, and all the good of the land is theirs. They become enslaved there eventually, but at this point in the story, they are secure. Then they are in the wilderness, in the promised land, in exile, and restored.

We can also see analogues in many different individual stories, not least this story of Joseph and his metaphorical descent and rising, from the pit to become the father to Pharaoh.

Verse 17, בער, most frequently kindle or perhaps the archaic shrive, occasionally brute, is here kine. Strange how it is similar to kindle even in English. My domain of animal is full of beasts of burden. There aren't enough names to go around for them all, so some archaisms are needed.

טען lade is a hapax. The stem occurs twice in the Bible, Isaiah 14:19 and here and is considered distinct in both cases. The more common usage of lade today is in its past participle laden. (You can test this in the Google Ngram viewer.)

My choices of glosses for clothing have led me to select shawl here. KJV has change of raiment, but I have been careless and raiment was used up early. JB has festal garment. My renewed is from the frame of book four of the Psalms. Is this just a change of clothes?

1 Chronicles 15

Verse 15, the three famed Psalmists, Asaph, Heyman, and Ethan are all mentioned. Curious that all the work under their names is not contemporaneous with David, but clearly reflects the exile. All the names in the many many chapters filled with names tend to solidify the story as they fall into place as I note repetition of the names and sometimes different spellings. But without reading the whole at such a painfully slow pace as we have, I could never have noticed. Nor would I have noticed without the computer suggestions if it were only my own memory I was relying on. How many Bob's can one keep track of?

About reading, I would not want to discourage anyone from the reading of these artifacts or from their music, but there are plenty of wrong reasons for reading, such as a lust for power, or a defense of emotional or psychological territory. All potential distractions fall into these two categories.  But this tradition, so loved by the Hebrews, is a foundation, and the matter of reading it is somewhat inexpressible.

For Michal verse 29 check out 2 Samuel 6.15. (The verbs describing David will give you a chuckle.)

2 Kings 7

When one is setting an aria for a story, repeating a key phrase is something a composer will do. Does this rather than source criticism account for some of the narrative pressing home of the point in this story?

Imagine a reprise sung by the man of God and the equerry (and thanks to JB for this unique office word.)
opening statement of the MoG
v 1   e B z-q,g# ^A B B rev,C qad,e B rev,c d g# f e
The recitative after the atnah continues on the dominant and sub mediant, warning notes.
Equ - his opening
v 2   e B paz,tal,pas,ger,B zar,seg,B rev,C qad,z-q,g# B ^A (Mog) rev,C qad,z-q,g# f e

Mog - his closing recitative is on the rest note, the subdominant, I told you so. Note also the reversal of the phrases creating a circular structure.
v 18 e rev,qad,B z-q,g# ^A pas,ger,rev,e qad,qad,z-q,qad,B z-q,g# e
Equ - his reprise is the same shape with differing ornaments.
v 19 e pas,ger,B zar,seg,B rev,C qad,z-q,g# B                ^A (Mog) rev,C qad,z-q,g# f e

It could be sung that way.

The recurrence structure just looking at the 21 words used two or three times excluding verses 3 to 15 is really clear.
Recurrence pattern of words used two or three times in 2 Kings 7:1,2,16-20
I don't give you many notes, but you can reconstruct my questions and choices by reading the Hebrew and seeing what I have done - whether for good or ill - to the English.

Thus says Yahweh, As at this time tomorrow, a bushel of fine flour for a shekel, and two bushels of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria.

And he said, You behold. See with your eyes, but from there you will not eat.

Ezekiel 47

Very few stems in Hebrew begin with פ followed by כ.There are three words that I have put all under the stem פך פכך פכה. They rarely occur.  This stem may be related to בכה weeping, suggesting that the stem refers to a trickle of tears. Perhaps transformed tears, a reminder in the torrential amounts of water to come, that their origin is in suffering.

מזה ומזֶה is I suppose an idiom - on this (side) and on that (side). The word for side is not in it. Maybe here and there is an English similar idiom, the 'whatever' being understood. The tree is singular, so maybe it is like the banyan tree in Lahaina, Maui.
the banyan tree in Lahaina, Maui (photo taken by me Dec 2015)
Verse 47 uses נפל fall, twice, framing the verse, without specifying the falling of dice or the lot (גרל). JB and KJV interpret the stem as implying the falling of the lot. This is the only place so far that I have found lot or dice implied in a verb. Other verbs that גרל is used explicitly with for determining a result are נתן, give, assign, שׁלך, cast, נער, toss, נפל fall, טול hurl, נחל, inherit. Various verbs are also used for reporting a result.

The end of the temple narrative gives rise to a healing torrent of waters and integrated cultures. This is a wadi or torrent of water (נחל), the same stem as inheritance. There are 14 occurrences in the chapter, 7 torrent, (verses 5 to 12) and 7 inherit (verses 13-23). Others have river (נהר). In this case, I think river is the wrong gloss. It loses the play.
