Genesis 46

We are back to the נפשׁ that has come into Egypt. It is always singular in this passage even when it refers to several people. It behaves here as a collective noun. I am aware that individual souls are simply not viable alone. This is so obvious. I have cited before how many people I am dependent on for what I am doing. They number in multi-thousands and they are unaware of my work, but it would not have been possible without them. Who I am is a complex mapping of many. There is no me apart from them. Hence the concept of one body.

Interestingly enough, while working on Judges 21, a somewhat difficult chapter, I note that זכר is almost always singular, but I had often rendered it plural with כל. That will not do, for whereas נפשׁ is collective, זכר is not. So - a bunch more changes. I have thought with difficulty about soul so much, that I may just have to reintroduce it since being does not work in the singular for an English reader. But I will wait. It does have an impact on Psalm 107.

Verse 20 is a fascinating example of a place where the atnah is in an awkward place.

The dialogue in verses 32-34 gives a contradictory instruction. Joseph appears to have instructed Jacob to dissimulate about his occupation. The kin Joseph takes to see Pharaoh fail to do this, as we have already read.

וְהָאֲנָשִׁים֙ רֹ֣עֵי צֹ֔אן כִּֽי־אַנְשֵׁ֥י מִקְנֶ֖ה הָי֑וּ וְצֹאנָ֧ם וּבְקָרָ֛ם וְכָל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר לָהֶ֖ם הֵבִֽיאוּ	32		And the men are shepherds of sheep, for men of livestock they have been, and their flocks and their herds and all that is theirs, they have brought.	3c	4B	15 15
וְהָיָ֕ה כִּֽי־יִקְרָ֥א לָכֶ֖ם פַּרְעֹ֑ה וְאָמַ֖ר מַה־מַּעֲשֵׂיכֶֽם	33		And it will be that when Pharaoh calls you, and says, What do you do?	3e	4A	10 8
וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֗ם אַנְשֵׁ֨י מִקְנֶ֜ה הָי֤וּ עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ מִנְּעוּרֵ֣ינוּ וְעַד־עַ֔תָּה גַּם־אֲנַ֖חְנוּ גַּם־אֲבֹתֵ֑ינוּ בַּעֲב֗וּר תֵּשְׁבוּ֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ גֹּ֔שֶׁן כִּֽי־תוֹעֲבַ֥ת מִצְרַ֖יִם כָּל־רֹ֥עֵה צֹֽאן	34		Then you will say, Men of livestock, your servants have been from our youth and till now, both ourselves, also our ancestors, so that you may settle in the land of Goshen, for every shepherd of sheep is an abomination of Egypt.	3e	4C	31 19
