Exodus 8

Can't leave the frogs mid-story!  Yahweh is an insightful psychiatrist. We do not leave our possessions until we are seriously brought up short, and then when we have breathing-room, we indulge in a little self-glorification (כבד, glory, heavy, liver, etc). Also who needs gnats or lice when dust will do? In the mind of the earthling, a mote is as good as a discouragement as anything real. We, the sovereigns of our small or large territories, can read this story with ourselves in all the roles. The close combat is in us all (v 18).

Every move away from the status quo is difficult for Pharaoh. The notion of a heavy or even glorified (same word) heart is easier to understand than the hard heart. Pharaoh is loved, as are his servants, and his people, and the cattle also.

The residue of frogs made a stink, but not a single fly was left. The nature of swarming I suppose. That this is story is seen in the sometimes singular, sometimes plural frog.

Exodus 8 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And Yahweh said to Moses, Say to Aaron, Stretch out your hand with your rod over the rivers, over the canals, and over the pools,
and make the frogs ascend over the land of Egypt.
3e 4C 37
14
2 And Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt,
and the frog ascended and covered the land of Egypt.
3e 4C 14
15
3 And the magicians did so with their incantations,
and they brought up the frogs over the land of Egypt.
3e 4A 13
15
4 And Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron and he said, Petition to Yahweh that he put aside the frogs from me and from my people,
and I will send out the people and they will sacrifice to Yahweh.
3e 4B 35
13
5 And Moses said to Pharaoh, Adorn yourself for me. When will I petition for you and for your servants and for your people to cut off the frogs from you and from your houses?
Solely in the Nile, they will be residue.
3e 4B 44
7
6 And he said, Tomorrow.
And he said, According to your word, so that you may know that there is none like Yahweh our God.
3e 4B 6
19
7 And the frogs will depart from you, and from your houses, and from your servants, and from your people.
Solely in the Nile, they will be residue.
3e 4B 25
7
8 So Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh,
and Moses cried out to Yahweh concerning the matter of the frogs that he had set for Pharaoh.
3d 4C 13
21
9 And Yahweh did as Moses spoke,
and the frogs died, from the houses, from the courts, and from the fields.
3e 4B 9
22
10 And they accumulated them, homer by homer.
And the land stank.
3e 4B 12
6
11 And Pharaoh saw that there was breathing-room, and he glorified his heart, and he did not pay heed to them,
as Yahweh had spoken.
3e 4C 23
8
12 And Yahweh said to Moses, Say to Aaron, Stretch out your rod and strike the dust of the earth,
and it will become gnats in all the land of Egypt.
3e 4B 27
13
13 And they did so. And Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and struck the dust of the earth, and it became gnats among the human and among the cattle.
All the dust of the earth became gnats in all the land of Egypt.
3d 4C 37
17
14 And the magicians did so with their incantations to bring forth gnats and they were not able,
and there were gnats among the human and among the cattle.
3c 4B 25
12
15 And the magicians said to Pharaoh, The finger of God this is.
But he made the heart of Pharaoh resolute and he did not pay heed to them as Yahweh had spoken.
3e 4C 16
21

16 And Yahweh said to Moses, Rise early in the morning and be present before Pharaoh. Behold he is coming out to the water.
And say to him, Thus says Yahweh, Send out my people that they may serve me.
3e 4C 28
20

17 B For if it is not in you to send my people, note me well sending on you and on your servants and on your people and on your houses a swarm of flies.
And the houses of Egypt will be filled with swarming flies and also the ground that they are on.
3c 4C 35
23
18 And I will distinguish in that day the land of Goshen where my people stand, so that there will not be there a swarm of flies,
in order that you may know that I am Yahweh, in close combat with the land.
3d 4C 30
16
19 And I have put a ransom between my people and your people.
Tomorrow will be this sign.
3e 4B 13
9

20 And Yahweh did so. And there came a swarm of flies, heavy, towards the house of Pharaoh and the house of his servants.
And in all the land of Egypt, the earth was destroyed in the presence of the swarm of flies.
3c 4C 22
17
21 And Pharaoh called to Moses and to Aaron,
and he said, Go. Sacrifice to your God in the land.
3d 4B 12
14

22 And Moses said, It is not established to do such, for an abomination of Egypt we would sacrifice to Yahweh our God.
Lo, will we sacrifice an abomination of Egypt for their eyes? and would they not engulf us with stones?
3d 4C 26
19

23 C A three days journey we will go into the wilderness,
and sacrifice to Yahweh our God, as he said to us.
3e 4C 12
18
24 And Pharaoh said, I, I will send you out and you may sacrifice to Yahweh your God in the wilderness. Only far away? You will not walk far away.
Petition for me.
3d 4C 35
6

25 And Moses said, Behold I am coming forth from you, and I will petition to Yahweh to turn aside the swarming flies, from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow.
Only let not Pharaoh again be jesting, so as not to send out the people to sacrifice to Yahweh.
3d 4C 40
21

27 And Yahweh did as Moses spoke, and he turned aside the swarming flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people.
He did not leave a single residue.

Exodus 7

Often the more difficult areas to translate are those you are familiar with so you think you know them already. It is not so. Exodus as I noted earlier is about 'sending' not so much about 'letting go'. Everywhere that I have restored sending out to this story, an aspect of its intent seems to be clearer to me. [I have reviewed all posts where I failed to use this gloss for שׁלח.]

There is a serious responsibility on Pharaoh to send rather than just to let go. It is an active change of heart in the Egyptian. Note that Pharaoh's heart is not always hardened, it is also heavy and resolute. They are in this case quite different stems. Just because it is a story does not require that it be over-simplified. The change of heart only happens in the face of the death of what is precious to him.

You might want to read that again. It is even that the bootstrap of our consciousness is a consciousness of death. This leads to ethics, value, and love. Nothing short of that is acceptable.

Such a message can have a real story frame. That is why these chapters of Exodus read like a comic book. The crucial aspect is the awakening of the responsibility of the world to send out its people so that they may serve the mystery. It is not just about Moses and Israel or even blood and frogs and magic wands (or dragons or snakes).

20 And they did so, Moses and Aaron, as Yahweh commanded. And he lifted high the rod and struck the waters that were in the Nile in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants,
and all the waters that were in the Nile changed to blood.

Proverbs 20

All these are surely terse puzzles, every one, pair, trio, ... of them. Note the identity of verse 16 with 27:13, except the missing first letter, a weak ל, and verse 16 below has a ketiv that is masculine plural, where the qere and 27:13 are both feminine singular. This foreign woman (or men) - any signification?

As a time-stamp, I have now removed mercy seat as a gloss and loving-kindness has morphed to kindness (+ a few mercies) everywhere including all the psalms. The deciding factor is the syllable count. חסד is 2 syllables, not 4. כפרת has lost none of its significance for being just a cover. It is the cover where we meet with G-d. How else can I discern my way except at G-d's pace? If a gloss excludes by its history then it must be rejected.

Sometimes I interpret by adding the missing verb. Sometimes I don't.

Meaning

Meaning what?

Some resources:

for children, This is not my hat. by Jon Klassen - look at the images.

for adults - when one is too sure of something, Multimodality: A Social Semiotic Approach to Contemporary Communication by Gunther Kress

Look inside the book and read the opening chapter.... (Books customers also bought could not be retrieved)

You can't get the meaning from words alone. Music, images, experience, ... Do read the words.

Leviticus 10

Leviticus 10 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And the children of Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, took each his censer and positioned fire in it, so they might set up incense over it.
And they approached the presence of Yahweh with strange fire that he had not commanded them.

and they died in the presence of Yahweh.

3 And Moses said to Aaron, It is what Yahweh spoke, saying, In those who approach me I will be sanctified, and over the presence of all the people, I will be glorified.
And Aaron was mute.

6 And Moses said to Aaron, and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his children, Your heads do not dishevel and your garments do not wrest, and you will not die. For over all the assembly he will rage.
So let your kin, all the house of Israel, weep for the incineration that Yahweh incinerated.

Exodus 35

The chapter repeats some sections and phrases in Exodus 25. This feature of extensive repetition allows a reader and writer to correct their first impressions of a text when they meet it again (if one reads closely). At the same time, there is opportunity to consider new first impressions.

I wondered about lumber - I could now use wood. I recovered that gloss some weeks ago. Perhaps the traditional acacia wood is simpler.

There are a number of verses in this chapter without rest, or mid-verse caesura. It's curious...

Jeremiah 22

Taking sporadic breaks over the next several weeks. Busy on other things. I will miss working on the puzzle, but it will still be there after whatever breaks I take.

I picked a chapter of Jeremiah just to see what it was like after so much time on the cult and its sacrifices. Verse 3 is pleasing - it reflects the character of Yahweh in the Psalms. To act as this character acts is to know the same (verse 16). To fail to act this way, and the ruler reflects the character of the people, is a sad ending. Very sad, but no wailing is requested.

In the land before quotation marks, speech is often introduced by the word אמר, or saying. I also capitalize the first letter of direct speech. And here in verse 18, the word saying is omitted in the Hebrew. This is rare, but the rationale for it is clear. The writer is reporting the text of traditional laments at a wake. But they were not actually said in this case.

Jeremiah 22 Fn Min Max Syll
1 C Thus says Yahweh, Go down to the house of the king of Judah,
and speak there this word.

2 And say, Hear the word of Yahweh, king of Judah, who sits on the throne of David,
you and your servants and your people that come into these gates.

3 B Thus says Yahweh, Do judgment and righteousness and deliver one who is robbed from the hand of the oppressor,
And guest, orphan, and widow, do not suppress, do not do violence. And the blood of an innocent do not pour out in this place.
3e 4C 22

4 C For if you do, you do this thing, then sovereigns will enter into the gates of this house,
sitting for David on his throne, riders in the chariot and on horses, he and his servants and his people.
3e 4C 13

20 Ascend Lebanon and cry out, and in Bashan give your voice,
and cry out from those passing by, for shattered are all your lovers.

21 I have spoken to you in your ease, but you said, I will not hear.
This has been your way from your youth, for you have not heard with my voice.

22 All your shepherds, wind will shepherd, and your lovers into captivity will go,
for then you will be ashamed and humiliated from all your hurt.

23 Inhabitant in Lebanon that nests in cedars,
how you will supplicate when pangs come to you, writhing as if giving birth.

24 I, Living, an oracle of Yahweh, for if Konyah child of Jehoiachim king of Judah were the seal on my right hand,
that from there I would snap you.

25 So I will give you into the hand of those who seek your integrity, and into the hand of whom you are in terror from their presence,
and into the hand of Nebukadretsar king of Babel, and into the hand of the Chaldeans.

26 And I will throw you down and your mother who gave you birth, to another land where you were not born,
and there you will die.

27 But to the land that they are partial to for themselves to return there,
thereto they will not return.

28 An idol despised, smashed, is this man Konyah? or a vessel in which there is no delight?
Why is he hurled down and his seed, and flung to the land that they do not know?
3e 4C 21
23

hear the word of Yahweh.

30 B Thus says Yahweh, Write this man childless, valour that will not prosper in its days,
for no representative from his seed will prosper to sit on the throne of David and govern any more in Judah.
