The Former Prophets - with the music per the Haïk-Vantoura deciphering key

Of the books of Tanach, there are five in Torah and four in the Former Prophets, three + twelve in the Latter Prophets, three + five + three in the Writings. Does that add up to 24 -- 5+4+3+1+11 - whew - yes.

Music by book is easier to handle than 929 chapters. (All the chapters are available in pdf and music XML forms here.) But you really can't hear it all at once. Everything has to be relearned with the music. (Tch... and you worked so hard at memorization of inadequate wordy translations!)

So here are the former prophets - Joshua (ihowy), Judges (wop'tim), Samuel (wmual a & b), and Kings (mlcim a & b).

More to follow -

Joshua 19

I wonder about my choices of gloss in different contexts. E.g. in this chapters courts would be equivalent to villages, both are the same stem in Hebrew, i.e. indistinguishable חצר (this stem is also grass). What if I wanted to adjust one to the other. It would be a challenge but it should be feasible for me to do a global change for these phrases in Joshua and even restrict it to certain phrasings. It affects perhaps a half dozen chapters. At the moment my distribution is court (166), grass (19), village (19). Switching the Joshua refrain would move 19 of the 166. I think it depends on what the context of the book might require.

Thinking about context, I don't think of Israel as being a grassy place. One might doubt it was any more grassy then as it is now. The north was more temperate and green than the south when I was there in 2010.  (See also Ben-Yoseph, Jacob. “THE CLIMATE IN ERETZ ISAEL DURING BIBLICAL TIMES.” Hebrew Studies, vol. 26, no. 2, 1985, pp. 225–239. JSTOR, JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/27908940. He points out the many references to water, snow, and dew as well as grass, springs, and wells, and the meandering Jordan river. And notes (p.233): "All evidence indicates that, agriculturally, the present is identical with the past." and p.235, Towns depended on "hinterlands". Now there's a gloss.) But whatever village might mean according to our modern (or seventeenth century) thoughts, perhaps the slightly more foreign courts is just fine for now for ancient settlements whose customs are equally foreign to us.

A glance at BDB or HALOT tells me I could spend quite a while on this. The both say that this type of settlement was without walls. I don't see a distinction in word forms used. The Hebrew-Latin concordance for חצר lists these glosses: locus septus, area, impluvium, atrium, villa, parvus vicus, without distinction of varieties. All word forms are under the same heading. In English these are local bands, area, mosaic, court, town, small village.

There is an issue of tense for these descriptions of borders. In the time of the narrative, is the border in the past, or in the present? This affects all chapters describing borders (15-19). JB, NIV are both phrased as if the author is in a future time and is describing a past state of affairs. KJV is inconsistent in its point of view. It is possible that the translator was even writing from the point of view of the 17th century CE. The Hebrew tenses are not obvious. Continuous present or imperfect is the choice I have made for Joshua, regardless of who wrote it. The rationale is that it is more present to the narrative itself. There is still some past tense related to the lot and its determination.

In the last verse, inherited (נחל) is used as a verb with transitive (piel intensive?) force, as if it were attributing cause to the subjects of the sentence. JB substitutes apportion (מנה). NIV has assign (נתן). Also in this long sentence, Yahweh is in apposition to the door. One could throw in a preposition from thin air. With doors, one is generally 'at' the door.

Throughout the chapters two words are used for the action verb associated with the lot, to come up (עלה), or to come out (יצא). Each of these stems has a host of variations distinguished only by the idea of up verses out.

יצא brought out (110) emerge (100) go forth (99) came out (76) went out (71) went forth (66) came forth (65) bring forth (57) come forth (50) go out (50) brought forth (49) going out (40) bring out (37) come out (28) exeunt (18) goes out (17) comes forth (15) going forth (15) coming forth (11) exit (9) comes out (8) gone out (8) offspring (8) brings forth (7) goes forth (7) gone forth (7) bringing out (5) emergence (5) brings out (4) come (4) source (4) -- (3) goings forth (3) bringing forth (2) bulge out (2) coming out (2) go (2) going off duty (2) goings out (2) out came (2) sally forth (2) and went out (1) anyone going out (1) duty (1) forth (1) get out (1) outgo (1) sally (1) there emerge (1) vanish (1)

The use of the lot has always intrigued me. People in the Bible talk directly to Yahweh, why not get the instructions and the plan for settlement directly? Why use a random process? People who want to read codes into the Bible predicting this or that should think more about shared responsibility and freedom of action and probabilities. Let's have a quantum theology, not a theology of magic.

Joshua 12

Remarkable how much of these verses were translated automatically. Obviously the phrases occur elsewhere. One day I will figure out how to show the similar phrases is a useful way, (perhaps). It is still a challenge to be consistent. Especially the faster one runs.

There are a number of places and person names where I have used more than one spelling. One day, an algorithm to see if these are justified. There are people and person names that are one letter different. Should they all be the same stem? There are people names where I have alternated between singular and plural, particularly the 7 nations in this chapter. How should I treat them? Having a strategy to begin with and an  algorithm to derive the name from the text (already part of the music program), would have been a good idea too. But take that time at the beginning, and you might never start, let alone finish.

And there are variations in the texts, differing guesses or inferences from the various places in which these are named, and so on. E.g. for Gilgal, JB has Galilee. Only one letter different (in the Hebrew stem).

Joshua 9

Verse 23. It was strange at first for me to see cut (כרת) used in the positive sense of release from something. Yet of course it can mean that even in English. My choices have been too constrained to allow me to find a synonym. I have already used release and free, and various forms of liberty seems too pretentious. May revisit this of course when various analyses are completed after the first reading.

1 And it happened when all the kings heard, that were across the Jordan, on the hill, and in a lowly place, and in all the ports of the great sea in the forefront of Lebanon,
the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite,

4 And they did also themselves with craftiness.
And they went and were diplomatic and took faded sacks for their asses, and wine bottles, worn out, and split, and bagged.

Joshua 13

Verse 16 is 37 syllables with at least 2 opportunities for a pause. I wonder if the composer thought there was no word in the sentence that merited a rest. Verse 9 contains most of the words of verse 16 and it also has no rest. In fact 9 reasonably long recitatives are expected from the singer. The lack of rest underlines the urgency of the settlement of the land. One cannot rest when trouble and sin remain in the body whether Yahweh himself is the agent of dispossession or the responsible unit of the body.

(That is the analogical interpretation of the music.) I inherited a safe herb chopper from a great teacher whom I knew. I always think of him and his wife (Joseph and Betty Richardson) when I am cutting up herbs from the garden. He once said to me, Have you not realized that it is our sheep and our goats that are to be separated in us?

That would have been about 15 years ago.
Joseph's rich and extraordinary life's accomplishments included 14 years in India as a Missionary where he revolutionized education in South-East India. This experience developed Joseph's deep love and interest in the people of India that led him to international recognition as a distinguished scholar and teacher at the University of British Columbia in the Department of Religious Studies.
I may be attributing this advice to the wrong source. I heard similar advice prior to 1977 from a Dr. Jacob Varughese whose letter I received after he had died! I seem to have some Indian influence in my earlier life. We knew Jacob and his wife in Toronto in the '70s.

Have we settled our promised land? In a word, no. It is full of enemies, most as I have said elsewhere, of our own making. But some are very difficult and are work for the intercessors. And some, like our desire to control the conversation even when we have zero information, need constant work from us.

Again in these lists there are gaps in the information. Words to be understood in the gaps are for the reader to figure out.

Joshua 6

In verse 2, the second half looks like an incomplete sentence and could be transferred to the next verse in apposition to other nouns. JB does this, but it really does deny the musician who set the text. I find myself trying to imagine who would behave this way as a composer. I have maintained and can illustrate that the music extends over many verses, but I would not expect words of the individual verse, once set, to move to another verse. I have never had to consider it in the first 19,925 or so verses. So I won't consider it now. I think the apposition must stay in verse 2 and apply to Jericho and its king.

Verse 5 - flat really is the preposition and pronoun under itself.

Verse 15 framework, as in other places, the same word as judgment. I have let this gloss stand in about 5% of the usages.

Verse 17-18 - the ban, or devoted to Yahweh, or utter destruction. Now I don't know what to put for חרם since it has these mutually embracing connotations. The grand metaphor is our death, the consequence of our inner conflicts between hearing and the action of self-protection. In the Christian tradition, the death is in the death of Jesus, and new life follows even in this mortal body. But you still can't take anything with you through that devoted act of faith. The vessels that will survive the the ban are for Yahweh. Can one believe that such will also benefit the individual?

Jericho is the entryway into the promised land. It was as it is, a brutal world, and consequences are unforgiving and final. I cannot justify the ban except within the responsibility that Yahweh takes for creation, however one measures this. And how will we measure, if we dare, our own responsibility as individuals, as families, as cities, and as nations?

18 And certainly you keep yourself from the devoted, lest you be devoted if you take from the devoted,
and set the army of Israel to the devotion and agitate it.

19 And all silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, holy they are to Yahweh.
Into the treasury of Yahweh, let it come.

20 And the people raised a shout, and they sounded on the shophars.
And it happened when the people heard the voice of the shophar and the people shouted in triumph, a great jubilation, that the wall fell flat, and the people went up to the city, each in front of him, and they conquered the city.

21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, of men and women, from youngster and to the elderly,
and to bull or lamb or ass, with the edge of the sword.

22 And to the two persons who had surveyed the land, Joshua said, Go to the house of the woman of harlotry,
and bring forth from there the woman and all that is hers, as you swore to her.

23
23 And the lads who had surveyed entered and brought out Raxab, and her father, and her mother, and her siblings, and all that was hers. And all her family they brought out,
and left them outside the camp of Israel.

24 And the city they incinerated in the fire, and all that was in it.
Solely the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass, and the iron, they gave to the treasury of the house of Yahweh.

25 And Raxab the harlot, and the house of her father, and all that was hers, Joshua kept alive, and she has settled within Israel to this day,
for she camouflaged the messengers that Joshua sent to survey Jericho.

26 And Joshua swore at that time, saying,
Cursed is the person in the presence of Yahweh, who arises and builds this city, Jericho. On his firstborn, he will lay the foundation and on his smallest, he will lay out its gateways.

and his fame was in all the land.
