Joshua 6

In verse 2, the second half looks like an incomplete sentence and could be transferred to the next verse in apposition to other nouns. JB does this, but it really does deny the musician who set the text. I find myself trying to imagine who would behave this way as a composer. I have maintained and can illustrate that the music extends over many verses, but I would not expect words of the individual verse, once set, to move to another verse. I have never had to consider it in the first 19,925 or so verses. So I won't consider it now. I think the apposition must stay in verse 2 and apply to Jericho and its king.

Verse 5 - flat really is the preposition and pronoun under itself.

Verse 15 framework, as in other places, the same word as judgment. I have let this gloss stand in about 5% of the usages.

Verse 17-18 - the ban, or devoted to Yahweh, or utter destruction. Now I don't know what to put for חרם since it has these mutually embracing connotations. The grand metaphor is our death, the consequence of our inner conflicts between hearing and the action of self-protection. In the Christian tradition, the death is in the death of Jesus, and new life follows even in this mortal body. But you still can't take anything with you through that devoted act of faith. The vessels that will survive the the ban are for Yahweh. Can one believe that such will also benefit the individual?

Jericho is the entryway into the promised land. It was as it is, a brutal world, and consequences are unforgiving and final. I cannot justify the ban except within the responsibility that Yahweh takes for creation, however one measures this. And how will we measure, if we dare, our own responsibility as individuals, as families, as cities, and as nations?
