2 Chronicles 17

It is a long inter-generational process to teach and to learn. Is a temporary reprieve better than nothing? Or is there really nothing there? (Psalm 77 next Sunday will remind you why I can ask such a dreadful question.) We wait for a time when the bear will peaceably eat its berries. And the wolf lie down with the lamb etc. If we indeed know (as some say) the word of God, then we should neither need nor should we provoke ... a third of the earth burnt up (without harming the oil and the wine) to learn a lesson of grace and humility.

But power gives the need for protection. So the the next chapters will document the ebb and flow of governmental failures. This record of failure, given as an example to all the nations, does not excuse anyone from responsibility to govern and to influence policy.

וַיִּ֨תֶּן־חַ֔יִל בְּכָל־עָרֵ֥י יְהוּדָ֖ה הַבְּצֻר֑וֹת וַיִּתֵּ֤ן נְצִיבִים֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ יְהוּדָ֔ה וּבְעָרֵ֣י אֶפְרַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֥ר לָכַ֖ד אָסָ֥א אָבִֽיו	2		And he positioned force in all the enclosed cities of Judah, and assigned monitors in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim that Asa his father had conquered.	3e	4C	15 25
וַיְהִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה עִם־יְהוֹשָׁפָ֑ט כִּ֣י הָלַ֗ךְ בְּדַרְכֵ֞י דָּוִ֤יד אָבִיו֙ הָרִ֣אשֹׁנִ֔ים וְלֹ֥א דָרַ֖שׁ לַבְּעָלִֽים	3		And Yahweh was with Yahweh-judges [Jehoshaphat], for he walked in the ways of David his father, the former times, and not searching out the Baalim.	3e	4C	9 21
כִּ֠י לֵֽאלֹהֵ֤י אָבִיו֙ דָּרָ֔שׁ וּבְמִצְוֺתָ֖יו הָלָ֑ךְ וְלֹ֖א כְּמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יִשְׂרָאֵֽל	4	~	But searching out to the God of his father, and in his commandments he walked, and not according to the deeds of Israel.	3e	4C	14 9
וַיָּ֨כֶן יְהוָ֤ה אֶת־הַמַּמְלָכָה֙ בְּיָד֔וֹ וַיִּתְּנ֧וּ כָל־יְהוּדָ֛ה מִנְחָ֖ה לִיהוֹשָׁפָ֑ט וַֽיְהִי־ל֥וֹ עֹֽשֶׁר־וְכָב֖וֹד לָרֹֽב	5		And Yahweh established the kingdom in his hand, and all Judah gave a gift to Jehoshaphat, and there was for him riches and glory in abundance.	3c	4C	26 9
וַיִּגְבַּ֥הּ לִבּ֖וֹ בְּדַרְכֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְע֗וֹד הֵסִ֛יר אֶת־הַבָּמ֥וֹת וְאֶת־הָאֲשֵׁרִ֖ים מִיהוּדָֽה	6		His heart was lofty in the ways of Yahweh, and still he put aside the high places and the fetishes from Judah.	3d	4B	10 17
וּבִשְׁנַ֨ת שָׁל֜וֹשׁ לְמָלְכ֗וֹ שָׁלַ֤ח לְשָׂרָיו֙ לְבֶן־חַ֙יִל֙ וּלְעֹבַדְיָ֣ה וְלִזְכַרְיָ֔ה וְלִנְתַנְאֵ֖ל וּלְמִיכָיָ֑הוּ לְלַמֵּ֖ד בְּעָרֵ֥י יְהוּדָֽה	7		And in the third year of his reign, he sent to his nobility, to Benworthy, and to Obadiah [Servant of Yah], and to Zechariah [Memorial of Yah], and to Netaneel [Given of God], and to Mikayahu [Who is like Yah], to teach the cities of Judah.	3e	4C	34 9
וְעִמָּהֶ֣ם הַלְוִיִּ֗ם שְֽׁמַֽעְיָ֡הוּ וּנְתַנְיָ֡הוּ וּזְבַדְיָ֡הוּ וַעֲשָׂהאֵ֡ל וּשְׁמִֽירָמ֡וֹת וִֽיהוֹנָתָן֩ וַאֲדֹ֨נִיָּ֧הוּ וְטֽוֹבִיָּ֛הוּ וְט֥וֹב אֲדוֹנִיָּ֖ה הַלְוִיִּ֑ם וְעִמָּהֶ֛ם אֱלִישָׁמָ֥ע וִֽיהוֹרָ֖ם הַכֹּהֲנִֽים	8		And with them, the Levites, Shemaiah, and Nathaniah, and Zebedyah, and Ashael, and Shemiramoth, and Jonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobiah, and good Adonijah, the Levites, and with them Elishama and Jehoram, the priests.	3c	4B	51 15
וַֽיְלַמְּדוּ֙ בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה וְעִ֨מָּהֶ֔ם סֵ֖פֶר תּוֹרַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה וַיָּסֹ֙בּוּ֙ בְּכָל־עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וַֽיְלַמְּד֖וּ בָּעָֽם	9		And they taught in Judah, and with them the record of the instruction of Yahweh. And they went around in all the cities of Judah, and they taught among the people.	3e	4B	16 16
וַיְהִ֣י ׀ פַּ֣חַד יְהוָ֗ה עַ֚ל כָּל־מַמְלְכ֣וֹת הָֽאֲרָצ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֖ר סְבִיב֣וֹת יְהוּדָ֑ה וְלֹ֥א נִלְחֲמ֖וּ עִם־יְהוֹשָׁפָֽט	10		And the dread of Yahweh was on all the kingdoms of the lands that surrounded Judah. And they did not fight with Jehoshaphat.	3e	4C	23 10
וּמִן־פְּלִשְׁתִּ֗ים מְבִיאִ֧ים לִֽיהוֹשָׁפָ֛ט מִנְחָ֖ה וְכֶ֣סֶף מַשָּׂ֑א גַּ֣ם הָֽעַרְבִיאִ֗ים מְבִיאִ֥ים לוֹ֙ צֹ֕אן אֵילִ֔ים שִׁבְעַ֤ת אֲלָפִים֙ וּשְׁבַ֣ע מֵא֔וֹת וּתְיָשִׁ֕ים שִׁבְעַ֥ת אֲלָפִ֖ים וּשְׁבַ֥ע מֵאֽוֹת	11		And from the Philistines came a gift for Jehoshaphat, and bearing silver. Even the Arabians brought him sheep, seven thousand seven hundred rams, and billy-goats, seven thousand seven hundred.	3c	4C	19 33
וַיְהִ֧י יְהוֹשָׁפָ֛ט הֹלֵ֥ךְ וְגָדֵ֖ל עַד־לְמָ֑עְלָה וַיִּ֧בֶן בִּֽיהוּדָ֛ה בִּירָנִיּ֖וֹת וְעָרֵ֥י מִסְכְּנֽוֹת	12		And Jehoshaphat was ongoing, and grew ever in ascendancy, and he built in Judah castles and cities for storerooms.	3c	4A	15 16
וּמְלָאכָ֥ה רַבָּ֛ה הָ֥יָה ל֖וֹ בְּעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה וְאַנְשֵׁ֧י מִלְחָמָ֛ה גִּבּ֥וֹרֵי חַ֖יִל בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם	13		And many affairs were his in the cities of Judah. And men of battle, valiant of force, were in Jerusalem.	3c	4B	14 15
וְאֵ֥לֶּה פְקֻדָּתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם לִֽיהוּדָה֙ שָׂרֵ֣י אֲלָפִ֔ים עַדְנָ֣ה הַשָּׂ֔ר וְעִמּוֹ֙ גִּבּ֣וֹרֵי חַ֔יִל שְׁלֹ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת אָֽלֶף	14		And this was their census for the house of their ancestors, of Judah, chiefs of thousands, Adnah the chief, and with him, valiant of force, three hundred thousand.	3e	4B	13 26
וְעַל־יָד֖וֹ יְהוֹחָנָ֣ן הַשָּׂ֑ר וְעִמּ֕וֹ מָאתַ֥יִם וּשְׁמוֹנִ֖ים אָֽלֶף	15		And by his hand, Yehoxanan, the chief, and with him, two hundred and eighty thousand.	3e	4B	10 10
וְעַל־יָדוֹ֙ עֲמַסְיָ֣ה בֶן־זִכְרִ֔י הַמִּתְנַדֵּ֖ב לַיהוָ֑ה וְעִמּ֛וֹ מָאתַ֥יִם אֶ֖לֶף גִּבּ֥וֹר חָֽיִל	16		And by his hand, Amasyah, child of Zikri, who willingly offered himself for Yahweh, and with him, two hundred thousand men of valour and ability.	3d	4B	16 11
וּמִ֨ן־בִּנְיָמִ֔ן גִּבּ֥וֹר חַ֖יִל אֶלְיָדָ֑ע וְעִמּ֛וֹ נֹֽשְׁקֵי־קֶ֥שֶׁת וּמָגֵ֖ן מָאתַ֥יִם אָֽלֶף	17		And from Benjamin, of valour and ability, Elyada, and with him, equipped with bow and shield, two hundred thousand.	3d	4A	12 13
וְעַל־יָד֖וֹ יְהוֹזָבָ֑ד וְעִמּ֛וֹ מֵאָֽה־וּשְׁמוֹנִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף חֲלוּצֵ֥י צָבָֽא	18		And by his hand, Yhosabad, and with him, a hundred and eighty thousand, a ready-armed host.	3d	4A	8 15
אֵ֖לֶּה הַמְשָׁרְתִ֣ים אֶת־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ מִלְּבַ֞ד אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥ן הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ בְּעָרֵ֥י הַמִּבְצָ֖ר בְּכָל־יְהוּדָֽה	19	g	These ministered to the king, besides those the king positioned in the enclosed cities in all Judah.	3d	4B	9 20
