The Latter Prophets - with the music as derived from the accents

The Latter Prophets - Isaiah (iwyihu), Jeremiah (irmihu), Ezekiel (ikzqal), and The Twelve (tri ywr: howy, ioal, ymos, yobdih, ionh, mich, nkum, kbquq, xpnih, kgi, zcrih, mlaci).

You can tell from these how relatively big the job would be to sing the work from beginning to end. The Twelve give us 209 pages of music. The latter prophets in total are 979 pages in this form. Torah is 1032 pages. The former prophets are 913 pages. I had guessed years ago that the whole might be 6000 pages - slightly too high I think. Tell you in the next post.

Ezekiel 27

The description is of a ship אניה wrecked. While it is nice to think of the proud I am the perfection of beauty, אני could also be a spelling error for ship. JB adds the word in. It is a help in seeing the metaphor even when left out. I would have to add the word to the Hebrew. It's not in the puzzle, so I won't. But what if a word that was in the puzzle joined to another word and disappeared into it? There is an example in verse 6 בַּת־אֲשֻׁרִ֔ים daughter of Ashurim? JB and NIV have something about inlay of ivory. BDB suggests reading without the maqaf (hyphen) בתאשׁרים, with boxwood.

Pannag פנג, JB has wax (דנג). NIV confections. Wax is a reasonable correction.

What to do with אזל a stem used in Aramaic passages for go, went, gone, but a sense in Hebrew of deplete, evaporate. Perhaps for Ezekiel they overlap since he likely knew both tongues. Or is it a location name? Here the accent assists as always in dividing the problem.

Our world is obsessed with the markets. And I think our faces are thunderous when they crash.

Ezekiel 23

This text is unsuitable for the naive. Let us not lose the gift that we are. Stark naked stuff. The juiciest saved to the end. This was not deliberate on my part! I have always followed the path of least resistance and maximum guessing of my translation algorithms. Except recently I have forced myself to do a chapter of each of the harder places over the last 6 weeks so I could finish them altogether. It is a consummation devoutly to be desired. Then I can concentrate on correction algorithms and presentation of what I have learned.

I was recently reminded of how starkly different the churches are these days. The music of each might even be impenetrable to the other. The preaching and teaching should have commonality, but emphases will be different. What innovative method could we use to overcome our differences? To find the places where we too have prostrated ourselves to the wrong paramour.

Example, to whom are we selling arms today? Whether actual or promised, is this what we are called to? Does this prostitution not come back to be aroused against us? (The sexual innuendo is deliberate. We have it in our slang too. Screwed.) The obvious example is the plague of deaths by gun violence in the USA. It is a direct consequence of their fear of being taken advantage of by violence. The fear grows in spite of the adage that perfect love casts out fear. Obviously, again, even that very religious country is not perfect in love. When will you come to your senses? The less obvious example is the militarization of the police. Such rigidity in a country causes social sclerosis.

There is a singular-plural conflict in verse 47. There is also what looks like an absurd (yep, that's what I said) use of ברא to create, for some other verb related to swords. I am going to leave it as awkward as I can - so that you have to puzzle over it. I have never used any other gloss than create for this stem and I am not going to start now.

I do use multiple glosses for the same stem sometimes. Less so in poetry where word-recurrence is a more significant component. So agenda and lewd are the same stem (זמה) very close to harlot / prostitute (זנה). Remember we are in a grand metaphor.

The last verse is positive. That we should know anything is miracle. That we should be so known is love. The stem נשׂא occurs 888 times in 808 verses. I wonder if that numerological tidbit will stand! Was God counting stems as tradition over 1200 years developed its canon? It is not important. God does not take away our freedom to question, especially the things we think we know that are not so.

O sclerotic souls, wake up!

12
17 And to her the children of Babel came, to the litter of infatuations, and they made her unclean with their prostitutions.
And she was defiled in them. And her integrity was unseated from them.
3e 4C 23
11
18 So she uncovered her prostitutions, and uncovered her nakedness.
And my integrity was unseated from over her, as my integrity was unseated from over her sister.
3d 4C 12
21
19 And she increased her prostitutions,
in the remembrance of the days of her youth, that she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt.
3e 4B 8
19
20 And she doted on their courtesans,
whose flesh is the flesh of asses, and the inundation of horses, their inundation.
3e 4C 9
18
21 So you visited the lewdness of your youth,
in dealing from Egypt your caress, for the sake of the breasts of your youth.
3e 4C 11
17
22 Therefore Aholibah, thus says my Lord Yahweh, Behold me arousing your lovers against you, from whom your integrity was unseated.
And I will bring them against you on every side.
3d 4C 36
10

23 The children of Babel and all the Chaldeans, Pekod, and Shoa, and Qoa, all the children of Ashur with them,
youths in their prime, attractive, viceroys and prefects, all of them. Equerries and the acclaimed, riders of horses, all of them.
3c 4C 23
24
24 And they will come upon you. Barbed chariot and whirlwind, and a congregation of peoples, grappling hook and shield and helmet, they will set against you round about.
And I will give judgment before them. And they will judge you in their judgments.
3e 4C 34
17
25 And I will permit my jealousy among you. And they will deal with you in heat. Your nose and your ears they will put aside. And your aftermath by the sword will fall.
These, your sons and your daughters, they will take. And your aftermath will be devoured in the fire.
3e 4C 35
22
26 And they will strip your garments,
and they will take the vessels of your adornment.
3e 4A 9
8
27 And I will eradicate your lewdness from you, and your harlotry from the land of Egypt.
And you will not lift up your eyes to them, and Egypt you will not remember any more.
3e 4C 20
18
28 B For thus says my Lord Yahweh, Behold me, I will give you into the hand that you hated,
into the hand from whom your integrity was unseated.
3d 4C 19
10
29 And they will deal with you in hatred, and they will take all your labour, and will forsake you naked and exposed.
So the nakedness of your prostitution will be uncovered, both your lewdness and your prostitution,
3e 4B 24
18
30 Doing these things to you,
in your prostitution after nations, such that you are unclean through their figurines.
3e 4B 5
18
31 In the way of your sister you have walked,
so I will give her cup into your hand.
3e 4A 9
9
32 C Thus says my Lord Yahweh, The cup of your sister you will imbibe, deep and broad.
You will be made sport of and derided from much knavery.
3d 4C 23
12
33 Drunkenness and sadness you will be filled with,
a cup of desolation upon desolation, the cup of your sister, Samaria.
3e 4C 10
12
34 And you will imbibe it, and suck it out, and its potsherds you will pick clean, and your breasts you will detach.
For I myself have spoken, an oracle of my Lord Yahweh.
3d 4C 26
13
35 Therefore thus says my Lord Yahweh, Because you have forgotten me, and you have cast me behind your back,
so moreover, you will bear your lewdness and your harlotry.
3d 4C 28
14
36 And Yahweh said to me, Child of humanity, will you judge Aholah and Aholibah,
and make clear to them their abominations?
3e 4C 23
11
37 B That they have committed adultery, and their blood is on their hands, and with their figurines, they have committed adultery,
and moreover, their children that they gave birth to for me, they have made pass through, for them to be devoured.
3e 4C 18
20
38 f Still this they have done to me,
they have defiled my sanctuary in that day, and my Sabbaths they have profaned.
3e 4C 5
18
39 And they butcher their children to their figurines, and they come to my sanctuary in that day to profane it.
And behold, thus they have done in the midst of my house.
3c 4C 27
10
40 And also that they have sent for men, coming from afar,
to whom a messenger was sent, and, behold, they came. For whom did you wash, paint your eyes, and deck yourself with finery?
3d 4C 15
32
41 And you sat on a glorious couch and arranged a table before it,
and my incense and my oil you set up on it.
3e 4B 19
11
42 And the voice of the tumult at ease was in her, and with men from an abundance of humanity, brought in besotted from the wilderness.
And they positioned circlets on their hands, and a crown of adornment on their heads.
3e 4C 25
21
43 And I said to the faded adulteress,
Now will they play the harlot with her prostitution? And she?
3d 4A 9
10
44 And they went in to her. As one goes in to a wife of harlotry,
so they went in to Aholah and to Aholibah, the lewd women.
3e 4B 13
18
45 And righteous persons themselves will judge them with the judgment of those who commit adultery, and the judgment of those who shed blood,
for adulteresses they are, and their blood is on their hands.
3e 4C 24
10
46 d For thus says my Lord Yahweh,
I will bring up over them a congregation, and will give them to be unnerved and looted.
3d 4C 9
20
47 And they will pelt stone on them, a congregation, and create them with their swords.
Their sons and their daughters they will slay, and their houses in the fire they will incinerate.
3e 4C 19
20
48 And I will eradicate lewdness from the earth,
that all the women may be tutored so as not to do according to your agenda.
3e 4A 10
19
49 And they will give your agenda to you, and the sins of your figurines you will lift up,
and you will know that I am the Lord Yahweh.

Ezekiel 22

Ezekiel 22 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And the word of Yahweh happened to me, saying, 3e 3g 10
2 And you, child of humanity, will you judge? Will you judge the city of blood?
And will you acquaint her with all her abominations?
3e 4B 17
11
3 And say, Thus says my Lord Yahweh, The city pours out blood in her midst that her time may come,
and she makes figurines against herself to defile herself.
3c 4C 24
12
4 In your blood that you have poured out, you bear guilt. And in the figurines that you have made, you have defiled yourself. And you have made your days draw near, and you have come to your years.
So I have given you as a reproach to the nations, and ridicule to all the lands.
3e 4C 37
20
5 Near and far from you, they will ridicule you,
the defiled of the name, excessively discomfited.
3d 4B 13
10
6 Behold the principals of Israel, each for its arm is among you,
in order to shed blood.
3e 4B 15
6
7 C Father and mother, they slight among you. To the guest, they deal in oppression in your midst.
Orphan and widow, they suppress among you.
3d 4C 17
9
8 My holiness, you have despised,
and my Sabbaths, you have profaned.
3e 4A 5
8
9 Scandal-mongers are among you in order to shed blood.
And on the hills they eat, among you. Lewdness, they undertake in your midst.
3d 4B 13
15
10 The nakedness of a father is uncovered among you.
The uncleanness of the segregation, they have afflicted among you.
3e 4A 6
9
11 And someone, with the wife of his associate, does abomination. And someone, his daughter-in-law defiles with lewdness.
And someone his sister, the daughter of his father, has afflicted among you.
3d 4B 24
12
12 f Bribes they received among you in order to shed blood.
Interest and increase you have laid hold of, and you have gained from your associates by oppression. And me you have forgotten, an oracle of my Lord Yahweh.
3c 4C 11
30
13 And behold, I struck my palm at your extortion that you have done,
and over your blood that has been in your midst.
3e 4B 15
11
14 Can your heart stand or your hands be encouraged for the days that I will deal with you?
I am Yahweh. I have spoken, and I have acted.
3e 4C 25
11
15 And I will disperse you among the nations, and sift you among the lands,
and I will complete your uncleanness from you.
3e 4C 18
10
16 And you will inherit among you in the sight of nations,
and you will know that I am Yahweh.
3e 4B 10
8
17 And the word of Yahweh happened to me, saying, 3e 3g 10
18 Child of humanity, the house of Israel has become to me dross.
All of them, brass and tin and iron and lead in the midst of a forge. Dross of silver they are.
3e 4C 12
23
19 Therefore thus says my Lord Yahweh, Because all of you have become dross,
so note me well. I will collect you into the centre of Jerusalem,
3d 4C 19
14
20 Collecting silver and brass and iron and lead and tin into the centre of a forge to stoke fire through it to pour it forth,
so I will collect in my anger and in my heat, and I will leave, and I will pour you forth.
3e 4C 29
21
21 And I will garner you that I might stoke you in the fire of my fury,
and you will be poured forth in her midst.
3e 4B 18
7

The land is the earth in miniature. The consequences of our actions - can we escape them? Has the severity of storms been altered by human activity? Are our prophets saying, Thus says the Lord, when the Lord has said nothing? Does inequity have consequences for those without insurance, or those who have to build in a flood plain? Can we control our population or deal with the poor and needy? Are we still making widows? Do we oppress guests (refugees and asylum seekers)?

We may not believe any more that God metes out an eye for an eye, but we ought to pay attention to consequences.

Ezekiel 24

Verse 2, סמך is usually used as a positive support. E.g. the passages in Leviticus where the one bringing the sacrifice supports his hand on the head of the animal. Or the appeals and statements in the Psalms e.g. 3:6 that God has supported me.  Here in Ezekiel there there is irony in the usage, as if the siege engines are supporting the walls of Jerusalem. Indeed they were, but destruction, though not ultimate, was their first intent.

I put some weight on תמם complete. I have no synonyms for it. For me it is the end of the sacrificial system, the completing of the sacrifice representing the perfecting of the one who offers. I did not use perfect as a gloss except in Ezra 7:12 in that foreign Aramaic tongue, and then it is only part of the gloss, perfect peace. And remember, the foreign king is both superstitious and bombastic in his language.

I note that you, as we all know, is no longer distinguishable as singular or plural in English. We have abandoned the thee and the thou. This is not all bad. While sometimes in my English, among you is from the singular בך and sometimes from the plural בכם, even in Hebrew, the singular pronoun sometimes reflects the corporate singular people so an among is not out of place. The singular is not necessarily the individual.

All I wanted to do was actually read this text as Jesus might have read it or even sung it. Though in his day the form of the text would have been different. Who knows what scrolls the Nazarene had access to? When I heard, "You cannot know my mind without reading the extended dialogue between father and son in the Hebrew", how was I to fail to read? I am not quite finished.

Verse 17, wrap up a lip. JB has cover your beard. A mourning ritual? I couldn't read it this way because it would break my concordance rules. There's no כסה cover, or your, or beard זקן in the sentence. It doesn't say cover your beard, but it might mean that. NIV has cover the lower part of your face. Maybe a footnote would be useful. What it says is wrap up a lip. Maybe this stopped people from talking too much when there was a tragedy.
