Psalms 139

Psalm 139 has had some press from a local colleague here (and at the related links on his page), so here is my translation from several years ago.

In the three books, Psalms, Proverbs, and Job, an additional major disjunction occurs, the ole-veyored, a cadence on the supertonic. When combined with the atnah (always following the ole-veyored if both are present), the result is a tricolon. I know, a subjective reading of the verses may allow for more tricola than these, but the importance of these major pauses should not be underestimated. The revia (mordent) is less emphatic. Here the tricola appear in 12, 14, 15, 16 - each one giving us pause as we read.

2 Chronicles 4

I keep working on Daniel in the background trying to become more familiar with the Aramaic turn of phrase.

Meanwhile in 2 Chronicles... The same stems used elsewhere are applied to the capacity of the molded brass sea on the 12 oxen. This is a large capacity vessel - fun article here by John Byl. The summary is worth citing since it links homer, cubit, and bath. Armload, and forearm length give a 9 litre estimate, imaging two watering cans, one in each arm and we have an idea of 100 to 150 times that amount.
It is, however, noteworthy that the homer (10 baths) was derived from the “armload”. Powell estimates that a donkey could carry about 90 kg. This would equal 90 litres of water, or 9 litres per bath, in excellent agreement with the 8.6 litre estimate based on the hemisphere and 3000 baths.
Verse 3, ten per cubit. JB omits.

Verse 14, give that this section is part of a list of what he delivered, not a work order, it is likely that the JB correction of עשה (he made) to עשר (ten) is correct.

Isaiah 10

The sequence in which I do these chapters is almost random now. I pick where there are holes to fill and from the top or from the bottom of the list left to do. It is curious that Isaiah 10 came up shortly after I began Leviticus 6 where the word for burning mass is used to describe the nature of the burnt offering,  for a burning mass on the altar all the night long till the morning. The repetition is striking (verse 17).

For verse 18, there needs to be some alliteration in reading כמסס נסס. The glossaries consider נסס as a hapax, though the stem is used several times as standard.

I had a Hebrew teacher briefly who said that my English must make sense. But while this would be nice, it is not always possible. Sometimes the Hebrew doesn't make sense. In the Jerusalem Bible, verse 27 note says corr. Look up the abbreviation and it reads correction or conjectural reading. Everyone guesses in this business, even the pros.  JB takes the part of verse 27 after the atnah and replaces it with: "He advances from the district of Rimmon," making this phrase the beginning of the new section describing the advance of Yahweh, the scourge of Ashur. I checked the Aleppo codex and there is no difference from the Leningrad. The source of the correction is obscure to me. NIV is very amusing: "The yoke will be broken because you have grown so fat." I could use fat for שׁמן. I don't use yoke because it would conflict with another stem that I have glossed as yoke. I used it once only. It is a hapax in Psalms 109.19.

Leviticus 6

Given that the prior post is mid-chapter depending on whether one is reading the English or the Hebrew, I have done the two in succession.

Lifting high or exalting the fat after it has been a burning mass all night seems to imply that דשׁן means ashes here - but it says fat. I have never seen fat turn to ashes. It smokes and spatters. I hope for the sake of the linen clothes it has diminished in power by morning.

Leviticus 5

I noted the use of join as in join house to house (נגע, also touch, contagion) in 2 Chronicles 3. Now I see that the exception named with respect to the squab of a dove is phrased three different ways in Leviticus. In this chapter, verses 7 and 11, and in chapter 12 verse 8.

In each case the music of the exception is distinct

Midway between palindromes

A snippet of Psalm 19 from 2006
When you have 929 chapters to read from a distant time in a distant place in an unfamiliar culture, there are oddball milestones along the way every 99 chapters following the first 19.

I reported one in October when I had read 613 chapters and there were 316 to go. The next palindrome is at 712 with 217 remaining. I am as of the ides of January, midway.

The first several palindromes I missed. I don't remember when I had first read 19 chapters. I see from my old blogs, that it was about this time 12 years ago. I was reading the psalms in random order, word by word, letter by letter, using diagramming software, the precursor to my current app and publishing to a now obsolete site. I still have those diagrams. On the right is an example of the kind of startup work I was doing 12 years ago. It is an accident that Psalm 19 was among the first 19 chapters.

My first status report was just 3 years ago on March 17, 2015. It appears that I had 161 chapters in the 'done' pile at that time. And a plan to complete by the middle of 2019. An estimated 1,350 workdays. Who knew that actually reading a portion of the primary literature of Biblical Studies was such a long journey? And there seem to be no short cuts even toward the end of the task.

About 15 months ago I had read 389 chapters. Of course I would have missed 118 done, 811 left. At that time (2011-2012) I still didn't know how many chapters there were to do. I missed 217-712 probably for the same reason, c 2013-2014.  Even at 316-613, I would have just discovered the web service that tanach.us provides.

A year ago today I had done 501 chapters and so was already past 415-514 without noticing. On the ides of June I noted my first palindrome. On October 29th, the next. Today we are at 681 done. The pace has been faster recently and my blog posts are scheduled ahead of real time by a few days. The summary status is always here. Some time next month, we may get to the next palindrome.

In the early days I drafted proposals and posters to sell the idea, but it was not so much selling anyone else, but following the techniques for organizing and describing the project that I knew from my day job. I knew I had to do the work of learning what the base data for the Hebrew faith was. This was the faith that Jesus had been born into, the person I claimed to have followed. The realization that I must follow by learning Hebrew only happened in my 61st year, 2006. It was at the St Andrews conference on Hebrews and Theology where I heard one presenter mention that the dialogue between father and son in the letter to the Hebrews was 95% taken from the Psalms. It's not a bad stimulus for a disciplined approach to reading the Psalms.

I 'finished' the Psalms in 2013. I have not finished the Tanach, but I have made my point to myself. I am, by the way, familiar first hand with a number of faith disciplines including atheism, science, Christian tradition, and now what came out of my fingers, the Hebrew faith.

Having seen in my impressionable years the News of the World in movie theatres, and the images of the Shoa, commonly called the Holocaust, I knew that something fundamental had been lost in Christendom. It now appears to me to have been lost a long time ago, much as the faith of the Hebrew tradition is lost as described within its own canonical literature.

As then, human beings join house to house today and the rich exploit the poor. As the psalmist says early in the book, When the fundamentals are overthrown. How does a righteous one work? The answer is, righteous or otherwise, one step at a time.

The images of my youth and the abuses of my schooling propelled me into a rejection of all religious belief. The opposite happened in my late 20s. Unpleasant I was to all around. But that's another story.

2 Chronicles 4

Verse 5, JB has festoons for שׁרשׁרה, a nice word that I won't use since this שׁרשׁרה is a word used of the creation of the vestments in Exodus 28 and I should gloss it the same, links, even though it is not a golf course. Palm trees figure in the last chapters of Ezekiel (40, 41, 48) as components of the temple but not at all in Exodus. No golfing metaphor there either.

Verse 12, the wings are not symmetrically described. Two differing verbs are used, touch vs cling (or cleave or stay close). KJV notes the difference, though its gloss join I have used elsewhere. JB and NIV make the language symmetric.

Interesting names for the pillars. I don't know of any independent justification of the possible meaning of Boaz.
