Genesis 26

I think in my mind I have always downplayed Isaac. But here he is clearly a digger of wells, and that famous place Beer-Sheva is simply Well Seven. Who knew? [Could also be well of the oath.]

So how many Hittite wives did Esau take? See also chapter 36.

Genesis 26 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And there was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham,
and Yitschaq went to Abimelek, the king of the Philistines, to Gerar.

18
2 And Yahweh appeared to him and said, Do not descend toward Egypt.
Dwell in the land that I will indicate to you.

12

3 C Reside in this land, and I will be with you, and I will bless you.
For to you and to your seed I will give all these lands, and I will uphold the oath that I swore to Abraham your father.

5 ~ Inasmuch as Abraham has heard with my voice,
and kept my watch, my commandments, my statutes, and my instruction.

6 And Yitschaq settled in Gerar. 3e 3g 7
7 And the men of the place asked of his wife, and he said, My sister she is.
For he feared, saying, My wife, lest the men of the place slay me over Rebekah, for she was fine of appearance herself.
3e 4C 19
25
8 And it would be that the days were prolonged for him there, and Abimelek the king of the Philistines looked down through the window,
and he stared, and behold, Yitschaq making sport with Rebekah his wife.
3e 4C 26
15
9 And Abimelek called for Yitschaq and he said, Surely, behold, your wife she is, so why did you say, My sister she is?
And Yitschaq said to him, For I said, Lest I die over her.
3e 4C 29
17
10 Then Abimelek said, What is this that you have done to us?
As briefly, one of the people may have laid down with your wife, and you would have brought over us an offense.
3e 4C 14
21
11 And Abimelek gave all the people command, saying,
Who touches this man or his wife will be put to death.
3d 4B 12
14
12 And Yitschaq sowed in that land and found in that year a hundredfold,
and Yahweh blessed him.
3d 4C 23
7
13 And the man grew,
and he went meandering and he grew until he was very great.
3e 4C 5
13
14 And it happened that he had acquired sheep and acquired oxen and an abundant staff of servants,
And the Philistines were jealous of him.
3e 4C 16
8

15 And all the wells that the servants of his father excavated in the days of Abraham his father,
the Philistines had obstructed and filled in with grime.
3e 4C 20
10
16 Then Abimelek said to Yitschaq,
Go from us, for you are very much more numerous than we are.
3e 4C 10
12
17 And Yitschaq went from there,
and encamped in the wadi of Gerar and he settled there.
3e 4A 7
12
18 And Yitschaq returned and he excavated the wells of water that they excavated in the days of Abraham his father, that the Philistines had obstructed after the death of Abraham.
And he called their names by the names that his father had called them.
3e 4C 38
18
19 And the servants of Yitschaq excavated in the wadi,
and they found there a well of living waters.
3e 4A 11
10
20 And the shepherds of Gerar disputed with the shepherds of Yitschaq, saying, The waters are ours.
And he called the name of the well Clash, for they had clashed with him.
3d 4C 20
14
21 They excavated another well and they contended likewise over it,
and he called its name Accuser.
3e 4B 17
7

22 And he shifted from there and he excavated another well and they did not contend over it,
and he called its name Spacious and he said, For now Yahweh has made spacious room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.
3c 4C 20
26
23 And he went up from there to Beer-Sheva. 3e 3g 9

24 And Yahweh appeared to him in that night and he said, I am the God of Abraham your father.
Do not fear for I am with you and I bless you and increase your seed, on behalf of Abraham my servant.
3e 4C 27
30
25 And he built there an altar, and he called in the name of Yahweh, and he stretched out his tent.
And there the servants of Yitschaq dug a well.
3c 4B 20
10
26 But Abimelek went to him from Gerar,
and Ahuzzat from among his friends, and Phykol chief of his host.
3e 4A 11
15
27 And Yitschaq said to them, For what purpose have you come to me?
For you, you hate me and you sent me from you.
3e 4C 15
15
28 And they said, To see, we have seen that Yahweh is with you, and we said, Let there be, if you will, an imprecation between ourselves, between us and you,
and let us cut a covenant with you.
3d 4B 33
8
29 That you will do us no hurt in that we have not touched you, and we have done with you solely what is good, and we have sent you in peace.
You are now the blessed of Yahweh.
3e 4C 37
8
30 And he made for them a party, and they ate and they imbibed. 3e 4C 13
31 And they rose early in the morning and they swore each to his kin,
then Yitschaq sent them away, and they went from him in peace.
3e 4B 15
14
32 And it happened in that day that the servants of Yitschaq came and they made clear to him about the agency of the well that they had excavated,
and they said to him, We have found water.
3e 4B 28
9
33 And he called it Seven.
Therefore the name of the city is Beer-Sheva [Well-Seven] to this day.
3e 4C 7
14
34 And Esau was a child of a forty year span, and he took a wife, Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite,
and Basmat the daughter of Elon the Hittite.
3e 4C 26
10
35 And these were a provocation of spirit,
for Yitschaq and for Rebekah.
