1 Samuel 26

I find some of my errors. Feel free to tell me others I have missed if you can find where to start.

This passage is the second incident showing the character of David and his respect for the anointed of Yahweh. In verse 19, I have used a gloss from Charles Williams Descent of the Dove for ספח. Here are the glosses I have used so far for this stem: accidental plant (4), co-inhere (2) e.g. Isaiah 14:1, 1 Samuel 2:36, co-inherence (1), deform (3), lesion (7), long veil (2).

Its most common gloss is lesion or deform. It is also accidental planting, those gifts of the prior year that sprout in the garden, like the cilantro sprouting from the coriander seed on the deck today. One can almost see that connection. But how can a word glossed as deformation also be glossed here as abide KJV (which I would use for כול) / share JB (חלק)? Same stem, many senses. One issue for me will be finding these things again when I finish the first pass and considering what stems with multiple senses are acceptable. It is possible that one simply needs to find a plausible amendment to the text so that the stem in context makes some sense. Or perhaps it is a sense we do not know.

The two items that David takes from Saul here are the spear and a צפחת of water. Must be a container of some sort. It is the same or a slight variant of the unique description of manna as a thin wafer, and is used also of the water container for Elijah. If I write jar, no one will notice. If I use thin wafer, anyone who reads will be jarred into asking, Oh, what is this? A water biscuit?

Verse 11 gives insight about the relationship perceived in David between Yahweh and his Anointed (=Messiah). Yahweh is present in his Messiah and so one cannot approach with violence and be guiltless. Yahweh is not the direct subject of the verb rendered as far be it. So I have not rendered it as Yahweh forbid. It seems more likely to me that David would be violating his integrity by taking such an action as if it were Yahweh's will.

15 And David said to Abner, Are you not a man? And who is like you in Israel? And why did you not keep watch of your lord the king?
For one of the people came to destroy the king, your lord.

Judges 21

I seem to be backing in to so many stories, reading the last chapter first, then filling in the background.

This is the end of a somewhat unpleasant sounding story. I would not want to make this any smoother. It must not be interpreted as prescriptive for good behaviour.

Genesis 46

We are back to the נפשׁ that has come into Egypt. It is always singular in this passage even when it refers to several people. It behaves here as a collective noun. I am aware that individual souls are simply not viable alone. This is so obvious. I have cited before how many people I am dependent on for what I am doing. They number in multi-thousands and they are unaware of my work, but it would not have been possible without them. Who I am is a complex mapping of many. There is no me apart from them. Hence the concept of one body.

Interestingly enough, while working on Judges 21, a somewhat difficult chapter, I note that זכר is almost always singular, but I had often rendered it plural with כל. That will not do, for whereas נפשׁ is collective, זכר is not. So - a bunch more changes. I have thought with difficulty about soul so much, that I may just have to reintroduce it since being does not work in the singular for an English reader. But I will wait. It does have an impact on Psalm 107.

Verse 20 is a fascinating example of a place where the atnah is in an awkward place.

The dialogue in verses 32-34 gives a contradictory instruction. Joseph appears to have instructed Jacob to dissimulate about his occupation. The kin Joseph takes to see Pharaoh fail to do this, as we have already read.

1 Chronicles 29

Verse 20 indicates worship (שׁתח). The objects of worship are Yahweh and the king. I.e. David. JB does not soften this by saying they were on their knees(!) and they paid homage. Yahweh and David are here put on equal grammatical footing with respect to a fundamental religious attitude. (They don't sacrifice to David though.)

The smoothness of the reception of Solomon as king does not sit well with my memory of 1 Kings 1 and 2 in which Solomon consolidates his reign with fratricide. A quick glance at 1 Kings 1 reveals very little overlap with this chapter particularly the act of submission noted in verse 24.

Note - no rest in verse 6. I have my usual trouble with prepositions. על for instance - here are my choices that I have used. about (58) above (47) after (9) against (310) along (1) as (1) as above (2) as for (1) as with (2) at (71) away from (15) based on (1) before (3) beside (5) by (122) concerning (112) for (115) for in (1) for over (1) from (132) from above (2) from off (29) from over (25) from upon (3) in (165) into (20) of (6) on (1,123) onto (28) out of (5) over (1,301) over above (1) per (6) since (2) though (2) through (1) to (280) toward (3) unto (4) untranslated (218) up against (1) up to (1) upon (164) with (37) within (2)

What would you do with this preposition and the image of time in verse 30? It seems to me that there is no definitive 'meaning' in a tongue for a preposition. There are a cloud of meanings leaning in various directions depending on the other words in the sentence.  For this one - ayin-lamed, over, and on predominate. Against is somewhat common. (This overlaps with other pre-clitic prepositions, ב and ל.)

Isaiah 66

This is our completion of the third book of Isaiah. The remaining 13 chapters are 23-30 and 43, 44, 46, 47, 48.

This chapter gave me pain. I struggled with my choices of gloss. I refused to invent another gloss for זיז. The language is as wild as necessary.

Part of verse 18 (their deeds and their devices) seems to belong in verse 17.

Verse 24, it is somewhat frequent to read ב as against, but I have read it here as in, its most common gloss. Yahweh is escaping from himself via creation. No avoiding the problem of evil.

כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם כִּסְאִ֔י וְהָאָ֖רֶץ הֲדֹ֣ם רַגְלָ֑י

1 C Thus says Yahweh, The heavens my throne, and the earth my footstool,
where is this house that you will build for me, and where is this place of my rest?

2 And all these my hands have made, and all these have been. An oracle of Yahweh.
But to this I will take note, to one who is poor and a stricken spirit, and apprehensive over my word.

Moreover they themselves have chosen their ways, and in their detestable things, their integrity delights.
