The Latter Prophets - with the music as derived from the accents

The Latter Prophets - Isaiah (iwyihu), Jeremiah (irmihu), Ezekiel (ikzqal), and The Twelve (tri ywr: howy, ioal, ymos, yobdih, ionh, mich, nkum, kbquq, xpnih, kgi, zcrih, mlaci).

You can tell from these how relatively big the job would be to sing the work from beginning to end. The Twelve give us 209 pages of music. The latter prophets in total are 979 pages in this form. Torah is 1032 pages. The former prophets are 913 pages. I had guessed years ago that the whole might be 6000 pages - slightly too high I think. Tell you in the next post.

Zechariah 14

Last chapter of Zechariah. Good time to stop for a two-week holiday driving to and from Regina. On the way I will see if I can find any readers for my new book. Let me know if you would like to be one. I have a half a dozen out there and would welcome some more before publication. Especially if you want to review it or say something I would dare quote.

But here's the last of Zechariah. You make sense of it. Then only one more book (Hosea, currently around 41% done) to finish the 12. (But translation never stops. I am still polishing Psalms after 10 years. I could do with some readers here too. Be an e-reader for the next book, due out in mid 2017.)

Verse 9 is a marvel. Is not Yahweh one at all times? Compare Deuteronomy 6:4.

Zechariah 14 Fn Min Max Syll
1 Behold, a day comes of Yahweh,
and divided are your spoils among you.
3e 4A 6
9
2 And I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to war and the city will be conquered and the houses rifled and the women raped,
and half of the city will go forth into exile and the remainder of the people will not be cut off from the city.
3e 4C 39
22
3 And Yahweh will come forth and fight against those nations,
as in the day he fought, in the day of close combat.
3e 4B 13
10
4 And his feet will stand in that day upon the hill of the olive trees that faces Jerusalem from the east and the hill of the olive trees will split in two, half of it toward the sunrise, and towards the sea a very great gorge,
and half the hill will deviate northward and half toward the Negev.
3d 4C 48
14
5 And you will withdraw to the gorge of the hills, for the gorge of the hills will touch to the next and you will withdraw as you withdrew before the quake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah,
and Yahweh my God will come, all holy ones with you.
3e 4C 37
13
6 And it will be in that day,
light will not be a glint of preciousness but hoarfrost.
3e 4B 7
11
7 And it will be one day itself known to Yahweh, neither day nor night,
but it will be at the time of evening. There will be light.
3d 4B 18
10
8 And it will be in that day, living waters will go forth from Jerusalem, half to the eastern sea and half to the other sea.
In the summer and in the autumn it will be.
3e 4C 35
8
9 And it will be that Yahweh will reign over all the earth.
In that day, Yahweh will be one and his name one.
3c 4B 13
14

10 ~ Round about is all the land as steppe from Geba to Rimmon southward to Jerusalem,
and it will be lifted high, and will be inhabited in her stead, from the gate of Benjamin to the place of the first gate to the corner gate and from the tower of Hananeel to the king's wine-vats.
3e 4C 22
43
11 And they will inhabit it. Utter destruction there will not be any more,
and Jerusalem will be inhabited in confidence.
3e 4B 11
10

12 And this will be the plague with which Yahweh will plague all the peoples that are hosted at Jerusalem.
Its flesh will rot while it stands on its feet and its eyes will rot in their holes and its tongue will rot in their mouths.
3e 4C 28
30

13 And it will happen in that day Yahweh will be much discomfort among them,
and they will be resolute, each with the hand of its associate, and its hand will come up against the hand of its associate.
3c 4C 18
20

15 And so will be the plague of the horse, the mule, the camel, and the ass, and every beast that will be in those camps,
as this plague.

16 And it will happen that anyone remaining from all the nations that come against Jerusalem,

Zechariah 12

I suppose I might as well get right on with it. It seems to me that these past two chapters anticipate a different kind of death. Like birth, our birth. And just what is like what in this passage?
Zechariah 12 Fn Min Max Syll
1 A load, the matter of Yahweh over Israel,
an oracle of Yahweh, stretching out the heavens, and founding earth, and fashioning the spirit of an earthling within it.
3e 4C 10
23
2 Behold I myself set Jerusalem a doorway of staggering for all the surrounding peoples,
and even about Judah it will be, in the siege at Jerusalem.
3c 4B 21
16
3 And it will happen in that day, I will set Jerusalem a stone, onerous for all the peoples. All who carry her will be lacerated.
And gathered against her are all the nations of the earth.
3e 4C 35
13
4 ~ In that day, an oracle of Yahweh, I will strike every horse with astonishment and its rider with craziness,
and on the house of Judah I will give sight to my eyes and every horse of the peoples I will strike with blindness.
3e 4C 23
23
5 Then the captains of Judah will say in their heart,
The inhabitants of Jerusalem are my assurance in Yahweh of hosts their God.
3d 4B 12
18
6 B In that day I will set the captains of Judah as a forge of fire among trees, as a torch of fire among bales, and they will devour on the right hand and on the left hand all the surrounding peoples,
and Jerusalem will be inhabited still in her stead in Jerusalem.
3c 4B 45
16
7 And Yahweh will save the tents of Judah at the beginning,
so that the adornment of the house of David or the adornment of the inhabitant of Jerusalem are not magnified against Judah.
3c 4B 17
26
8 B In that day Yahweh will defend about the inhabitant of Jerusalem, and it will be that one who stumbled among them in that day is like David,
and the house of David is like God, like the angel of Yahweh before them.
3d 4C 31
15
9 And it will happen in that day,
I will seek to exterminate all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
3e 4B 7
19

10 And I will pour out over the house of David and over the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of graciousness and supplications and they will take note of me whom they have thrust through.
And they will wail over him as one wails over one who is unique and they will be bitter over him as one is bitter over the firstborn.
3e 4C 36
23
11 B In that day, great is the wailing in Jerusalem like the wailing of Hadadrimmon,
in the crevasse of Megidon.
3e 4C 26

12 And the earth will wail, family by family alone,
the family of the house of David alone and their wives alone, the family of the house of Nathan alone and their wives alone.
3e 4C 14
26

the family of Shimei alone and their wives alone.

and their wives alone.

Zechariah 11

This chapter demands much creative thought. The limited concordance I have attempted is particularly important here.

I marvel at what thoughts occur that I would never have noted if I were reading even slowly in English. I know readers who lovingly caress the English prepositions never imagining that they are the least reliable of the glosses in the host language.

I think it best to say no more.

Zechariah 10

Only two more chapters of this one to go! So I did the short one - only 12 verses. I was only at about 36% when I started. I still ponder why some books auto-translate and some don't. Sometimes it is new forms of words that I have not yet encountered.

Not sure what to make of this passage: what role is Ephraim playing in the prophet's mind? They almost seem to be itinerant preachers. This image of wine-soaked is odd, as is the hissing of Yahweh as if a snake. It sounds like a lot of local battles and preparations for battle.

Zechariah 9, the famous chapter

Ah gentle reader, I would not want you to think the impoverished king was riding on two animals simultaneously, so I have not translated a vav. Horrors! You omitted a letter! Yes, beloved, because vav is a connector and can 'mean' just about anything the translator chooses to connect words with, even a comma or a space. Contrary to some opinions, the escape from the lunacy of riding two donkeys at once is not an appeal to Hebrew parallelism. It is simply an extra letter.

If you look at the music, you will see a pause in it on ass (חמר) and so time to determine as it passes if it is male or female, and hey, its a boy. Slow down and enjoy the poverty. Notice also the three differing words for said animal.

If I were reading this verse 9 without accents, I would have put more emphasis on the second syllable with a mahpakh, raising it to the high C earlier, but the emphasis of the verse is on the king. The rejoicing (which is a consequence of having an impoverished king) is emphasized by the pairs of parallels. So note the subtlety of these accents that expose meaning by their placement.

And notice where the rest is (the atnah ^). It is on simple stand-alone pronoun, he. In this verse he is saved. Note too how the atnah is in the middle of a sentence. The revia is sufficient to be a sentence closer (.) in the first 'half' of the verse.

In verse 16, it is Yahweh who is the subject of saves. Following the pronouns, I am reading 'the people' who are saved as the 'prisoners of expectation' of verse 12.

Note there is no rest in verse 11, the harrowing of hell is a single act without pause.

There are some shared words in this chapter with Psalm 144, particularly verses 12-14. There is some affinity with Psalm 72 also. The preferential option for the poor is certainly in evidence in both psalms.

Zechariah 8

Staff in hand, Jerusalem, 2010
Encouraged חזק is the word following the successful copying of a book of the Bible by a scribe. And the scribe then writes control counts for words, verses, and chapters on the page of the manuscript. We could use resolved also. But in this same chapter, I think I would preserve the concordance. I find the last verse ambiguous. Who is encouraged? Why not both parties?

I hear echoes of Psalm 85 in this chapter. The two chapters share about 25% of their words in total. In verses 7 to 12, we find salvation, dwell, truth, righteousness, peace, yield and produce in the same sequence as in Psalm 85:10-14 + a few other shared words - again about 25% of the words in this section. I wonder if the Psalmist was writing based on the prophet's promise?

Thoughts that occurred to me while reading this. I find such thoughts very hard to express.
Who 'takes hold' of whose garment hem?

Zechariah writes at the time of the restoration from exile in Babel (Babylon). Do we not all experience exile in some fashion?

Is it wonderful in Yahweh's eyes today, the state of Jerusalem? It is a hope, a patient expectation, that something can be done to alleviate the tension.

The gamboling in the plazas is even moot in more peaceful places as irrational fears grip common experience.

Notice the appeal to commerce. There should be a wage for earthling and for beast. It is so easy for every one to be set loose against everyone else.

I hope that appeals to self-interest will be rejected by electorates everywhere for good reason.

Yet people need their children, the crop, and the harvest, i.e. the economy - all people including the homeless and the refugee, the ones who are like me and the ones who are not. Don't trust the people who appeal to your baser instincts, fear and self-preservation. We cannot preserve ourselves. We can, however, help and encourage others and be encouraged by them. Don't trust vague appeals to freedom. We are not to be free from responsibility but rather free to respond.

10 ~ For before those days the wage of the human had not been, nor was there any wage for the beast,

Zechariah 7

One is not expecting a warm homecoming. Zechariah is indirect in his criticism. There is perhaps no other way for the wayward human.
Zechariah 7 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And it was in the fourth year of Darius, the king,
the word of Yahweh happened to Zechariah on the fourth of the ninth month, Kislev.
3d 4B 13

7 B What about the things that Yahweh proclaimed by the hand of the former prophets, when it was that Jerusalem was inhabited and at peace, and her cities surrounding her,
and the Negev and the lowly places were inhabited?

11
8 And the word of Yahweh happened to Zechariah, saying, 3e 3g 12

12 And their heart they rendered as adamant, lest they hear instruction, and the matters that Yahweh of hosts sent by his spirit, by the hand of the former prophets,
and there was great rage from Yahweh of hosts.
3e 4C 40
13

Zechariah 6

There are a few liberties with names taken in the following. You will get it. Ruinous grace. Even my disabled son said, oxymoron.

I tear through this visionary when I should have been travelling on holiday. But that was not to be. So I pursue the translation as an escape from trouble.

Zechariah 6 Fn Min Max Syll
