Carnival

A whole day early - as if Tim were pressing us onward, the May Carnival is out.

Isaiah 47

Verse 10, ראה, to see, is very common (over 1200 occurrences), but ראני, sees me, occurs only once. There is another instance in my data of sees me. It is ראי in Genesis 16.13. So maybe Isaiah's tongue has local variations in pronunciation.

for not again will they proclaim you tender and delicate.

2 Chronicles 30

God likes a great party. Even when the people are ritually unprepared.

Verse 3 its time, or that time, perhaps indicating they should have been prepared to do it in the first month. (Exodus 12).

Verse 5, קול, so far I only had only voice for this stem. Proclaim, etc I allow for קרא. So I have chosen declaration - Town-crier seems anachronistic, or I could overlap with the other stem and used proclamation. I am still fighting for as much concordance as I can squeeze out. I entertained courier but it is probably more suitable for the racers noted in the following verse. It is all somewhat of a gripping problem area.

2 Chronicles 30 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And Hezekiah sent over all Israel and Judah, and also wrote letters to Ephraim and Manasseh, to come to the house of Yahweh in Jerusalem,
to do the Passover of Yahweh, the God of Israel.
3e 4B 38
13
2 And the king and his nobility took counsel, and all the congregation in Jerusalem,
to do the Passover in the second month.
3c 4A 19
12
3 B For they were not able to do it at its time,
because the priests had not sanctified themselves enough, and the people were not gathered to Jerusalem.
3c 4C 12
22
4 And the matter was upright in the eyes of the king,
and in the eyes of all the congregation.
3e 4B 12
7
5 And they had the matter stand to have a declaration pass through all Israel, from Beer-Sheva and to Dan, to come to do the Passover of Yahweh the God of Israel in Jerusalem,
for they had not done much as it is written.
3d 4C 43
9

6 And racers went with the letters from the hand of the king and his nobility into all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying,
Children of Israel, return to Yahweh the God of Abraham Yitschaq and Israel, and he will return to those who have been secured, those of you still here from the palm of the kings of Ashur.
3c 4C 33
41
7 And do not be like your ancestors, or like your kin who trespassed against Yahweh, the God of their ancestors,
and he consigned them to desolation as you see.
3e 4B 28
12
8 Now, do not harden your scruff, like your ancestors.
Yield yourselves to the hand of Yahweh, and enter into his sanctuary that he has sanctified forever, and serve Yahweh your God, and the ferocity of his anger will turn from you.
3e 4C 13
37

9 B For if you return to Yahweh, your kin and your children will find compassion in the presence of those who carry them away, and they will return to this land,
for gracious and compassionate is Yahweh your God, and will not let presence depart from you, if you return to him.
3e 4C 30
24
10 So racers passed from city to city in the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and to Zebulun,
and they laughed at them and derided them.
3c 4B 25
14
11 But persons from Asher and Manasseh and from Zebulun,
were subdued and came to Jerusalem.
3d 4A 14
10
12 B Even in Judah, the hand of God was to give them one heart,
to do the commandment of the king and the nobles, in the word of Yahweh.
3d 4B 18
16
13 And an abundance of people gathered at Jerusalem to do the feast of unleavened bread in the second month,
a congregation of much abundance.
3d 4C 24
6
14 And they arose, and they put aside the altars that were in Jerusalem,
and all the incense altars, they put aside and cast into the wadi Kidron.
3e 4C 19
18
15 And they butchered the Passover on the fourteenth of the second month,
and the priests and the Levites were humiliated, and sanctified themselves, and brought in the burnt offerings of the house of Yahweh.
3e 4C 19
25
16 And they stood on their standing-places, according to their judgment, according to the instruction of Moses, the man of God,
the priests dashing the blood from the hand of the Levites.
3e 4C 21
14
17 But many in the congregation were not sanctified,
and the Levites butchered the Passover for all not clean, to sanctify for Yahweh.
3e 4B 12
21
18 B For a multitude of the people, many from Ephraim and Manasseh, Issachar and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, for they ate the Passover, but not as it is written.
But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, Yahweh the good make a cover-price from within,
3e 4C 36
23
19 everyone in their heart who is prepared to search out God, Yahweh the God of their ancestors,
though not according to the cleansing of the sanctuary.
3d 4B 20
9
20 And Yahweh heard Hezekiah, and healed the people. 3e 4C 17

21 And the children of Israel that were found in Jerusalem did the feast of unleavened bread, seven days, with great gladness,
and the Levites praised Yahweh day by day, and the priests, with instruments of strength to Yahweh.
3c 4B 32
21

22 And Hezekiah spoke to the heart of all the Levites, those who give insight, good insight of Yahweh.
And they ate endlessly seven days, offering offerings of peace and thanksgiving to Yahweh, the God of their ancestors.
3e 4C 23
33

23 And all the congregation took counsel to do the following seven days,
and they did seven days with gladness.
3e 4A 19
10

24 B For Hezekiah, king of Judah, contributed to the congregation a thousand young bulls and seven thousand sheep. And the nobles, they contributed to the congregation, young bulls, a thousand, and sheep, ten thousand.
And priests sanctified themselves in abundance.
3e 4C 48

and their voice was heard, and their prayer entered the habitation of his holiness of the heavens.

Status - what have I changed?

It might be considered that a blog post once posted is gone. But that is not how I am using this blog. The posts are all connected through the page Bob's Bible. If I change something in the database, I manually change it in the text of my reading in the post also. The posts therefore represent and include the latest changes forced on me as I consider more of the puzzle.

Over the past year, every book has changed. It is too much data to see at once. But here is a high level summary of new work and changes over the past 12 months. [I don't have data from prior years any more. I had to restore my data from backup last May and I lost all the audit dates on the text table. I should have turned off auditing, which date and time stamps every change I make, during the restore operation, but I didn't. This is the first time I have been able to see the answer to this question, What have I changed in the last year?]

  • words where I have managed a one-to-one relationship between the Hebrew and English stems. When a new nuance arises for one of these, I have to consider if I missed it earlier, so all uses are reviewed.
  • words that are rarely used in Hebrew. These are words where the 'meaning' of the Hebrew may be in doubt because there is too little information on its usage. Finding a unique English gloss is sometimes difficult.
  • words that are one to many, where one Hebrew stem can have many differing English stems. The Hebrew words are homonyms. The English stems have no relation to each other in sound. So play is lost in translation. A new situation may result in reviewing these, especially for English senses that appear only once. With this class of words, changes happen when I have been too free, when I have allowed the use of unnecessary synonyms in English. Then I come across a word where I have a new Hebrew stem and I need the English synonym that I have 'carelessly' used earlier for another stem.
  • words that were in common usage in earlier translations that I have decided to eliminate. Atonement and loving-kindness were eliminated just under a year ago. You can see the bulge in changes to the psalms which were otherwise 'completed' in 2013. Such a thing could happen again if I were to find a good solution to נפשׁ for instance.
  • Sometimes I find errors in my derivation of the Hebrew stem, especially for those that are similar and I have to check forwards into unknowns and backwards. I wonder how close my high level stem dictionary will be when I am done. This was what I wanted when I began. The concordances of the 19th century concentrated on words. I am interested in the question of similarities and differences between words and their origins. So I have driven all words back to their stem with a few exceptions and for these, like צדך and צדיך, the connection is clear. I have yet to figure out the best ways to display all this raw data.
I have wondered if I would come to a crashing stop in this process as if the language were not subject to such usage analysis. So far, so good, though there are several times when I have been, at least temporarily, stumped. And as noted, some 'solutions' are interim.

The changes by book are below. These numbers will continue to change of course, but they give an idea of the volume of work on each book. There are just over 23000 verses in this canonical text, so the rate of work this year would allow for a complete revision to the puzzle - (children always do a puzzle more than once) - over a two and a half year span.

1 Samuel 10

This is the last of the books with more than 10 chapters remaining. After this, there are 9 books remaining with 10 chapters still to do, one with 9, one with 8, two with 7, one with 6, 3 with 5, one with 2 and one with 1. That should add up to 145 left, 784 done. The order in which I attack them is subject to whim, but generally speaking I am working from the chapters with the most guesses by my prediction algorithm to those with the fewest guesses.

This one on Saul makes one wonder what sort of person he was known as. I have great sympathy for him. But he was not suited to his calling. Why would God call such a one to be the monarch? What was it that the people deserved? Why did they reject Samuel and Yahweh and demand a king? The people who knew him even invented a proverb about him. What does that proverb riddle us?

I couldn't resist a nod to Star Wars in the penultimate verse.

Genesis 32

This chapter is out by one verse with the traditional English versions.
Verse 6 uses all the livestock words in the singular.
There must be a deliberate link between the sounds of verse 2 and 11.
The second half of verse 12 is inarticulate.
Verses 15-16, the lists of animals, with their numbers, are not in the singular.

Jacob is יעקב, wrestle is reversed, אבק. So the sound is a wordplay. Note also the differing guttural, aleph vs ayin. But they sort of sound the same in this context. Lucky for me I have not yet used wrestle. In five other spots, I have glossed this stem as powder.

What is the palm of the thigh? What happened to it? Was it dislocated? (can't use that one) or displayed? I don't know - what does one do in wrestling, with a thigh? This stem יקה, unseat, display, is used only 7 times and we have not yet done 6 of them. The decision as to how to place this piece of the puzzle may change, especially since this wrestling is such a key experience in the human-God interaction. Another play with sound perhaps? Thigh ירך, knee, bless, ברך.

It is curious to me that כי ים is used only 2 times in the Psalms. In my early days before I had developed concordance searching schemes, I could not accurately search for a pair of consecutive words. Now that I can, I realize how common this word-pair is as a conjunction indicating a contrast, like rather or except. Over 100 instances.

Getting the wordplay with Israel ישראל. Letter by letter שר is chief or sultan or noble in my constrained tongue. The middle syllable רַ might suggest seeing. But it is the verb שרה persevere (Isaiah 9:5-6, Hosea 12:4) that helps the game.

Peniel or Penuel. Yod and Vav are often switched for each other, perhaps because of graphic similarity or ease of pronunciation or a scribal error. Either way, the stems in the word are probably פנה and אל, face and God.

and I have sent to announce to my master, to find grace in your eyes.
3e 4B 14
17
7 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying,
We came to your brother, to Esau, and moreover, he comes to encounter you, and four hundred men are with him.
3e 4C 14
24
8 And Jacob feared very much, and it was troubling for him.
And he distributed the people that were with him, and the flock, and the oxen, and the camels, into two camps.
3c 4B 12
28
9 And he said, If Esau comes to the first camp and he strikes it,
then the residual camp will be secured.
3d 4A 20
13
10 And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Yitschaq,
Yahweh, who said to me, Return to your land, and to your kindred, and I will do well with you.
3c 4B 21
23
11 I am the least deserving of all the kindnesses, and of all the truth that you have done for your servant,
for with my stick I have crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two armies.
3e 4C 24
24
12 Deliver me, please, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau,
for I fear him, lest he come and strike me, mother, against children.
3d 4C 13
18
13 And you yourself said, It is good, I will do well with you,
and I will render your seed as the sand of the sea, which is not counted for abundance.
3e 4C 12
18
14 And he lodged there in that night,
and he took from what came in his hand, a gift for Esau, his brother.
3c 4B 9
16
15 She-goats, two hundred, billy-goats, twenty,
ewes, two hundred, and rams, twenty.
3e 4B 9
10
16 Camels, nursing mothers, and their calves thirty,
cows forty, and young bulls ten, she-donkeys twenty, and foals ten.
3c 4C 12
22
17 And he gave into the hand of his servants a troop, a troop itself on its own,
and he said to his servants, Cross over before me, and set an interval between troop and troop.
3e 4C 15
25
18 And he commanded the first, saying,
When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, Whose are you? and where are you going? and whose are these before you?
3e 4B 8
29
19 Then you will say, These are of your servant, Jacob, a gift it is, sent to my master Esau,
and behold he also is following us.
3e 4B 24
9
20 And he commanded also the second, also the third, also all who walked after the troops, saying,
A word like this you will speak to Esau, when you find him.
3e 4C 27
18
21 And you will say also, Behold, your servant Jacob is following us.
For he said, I will make a cover-price before him with a gift that goes before me, and after such I will see his face. Perhaps he will bear my face.
3d 4B 17
32
22 And the gift passed by before him,
and he lodged that night in the camp.
3d 4A 10
12
23 And he arose in that night and he took his two wives and his two handmaids and his eleven juveniles,
and crossed over the crossing of Jabboq.
3e 4C 31
10
24 And he took them, and had them cross over the wadi,
and had what was his cross over.
3e 4A 13
8
25 But Jacob was left alone,
and a man wrestled with him until the coming up of the dawn.
3e 4A 10
13
26 And he saw that he was not overpowering him, so he touched in the palm of his thigh,
and the palm of Jacob's thigh was unseated in his wrestling with him.
3e 4C 15
15
27 And he said, Send me away, for the dawn has come up.
But he said, I will not send you away, except you bless me.
3e 4B 12
15
28 And he said to him, What is your name?
And he said, Jacob.
3e 4A 9
6
29 And he said, your name will not be pronounced Jacob any more, but Israel,
for you have persevered with God and with men, and you are overpowering.
3c 4C 18
15
30 And Jacob asked and said, Tell, please, your name. And he said, Why is it that you ask for my name?
And he blessed him there.
3e 4B 26
6
31 And Jacob called the name of the place, Peniel,
for I have seen God, face to face and I am delivered.
3c 4C 13
17
32 And the sun rose for him as he crossed over Penuel.
And he was halting on his thigh.
3e 4B 16
9
33 So the children of Israel will not eat the sinew of the tendon that is on the palm of the thigh until this day,
for he touched in the palm of thigh of Jacob, in the sinew of the tendon.
