1 Chronicles 5

We learn some important things about birthright from comments in this chapter. And also about the current situation for the writer. In all these chapters full of names, there are tidbits that fill in blanks.

Part of reading is deciding when two things are the same and when they are different. Names - like T-P below are variously spelled and or misheard in various places. Probably the same T-P though. And when does one use the, or a, or no article? All such details have to be considered, and when the translation is semi-automated, there can be lots of mistakes and misjudgments propagated by accident, a whole different set of problems from the tiredness that would happen if such a process were controlled manually.

7 And his kin by their families, in the genealogy of their successions,
the head, Jeiel, and Zechariah.

9 And toward the sunrise he settled to the entry toward the wilderness from the river Euphrates,
for their livestock was multiplied in the land of Gilead.

אֲחִי֙ בֶּן־עַבְדִּיאֵ֣ל בֶּן־גּוּנִ֔י רֹ֖אשׁ לְבֵ֥ית אֲבוֹתָֽם 15 Axi, child of Abdiel, child of Guni, head for the house of their ancestors. 3e 4B 15
וַיֵּֽשְׁב֛וּ בַּגִּלְעָ֥ד בַּבָּשָׁ֖ן וּבִבְנֹתֶ֑יהָ
וּבְכָֽל־מִגְרְשֵׁ֥י שָׁר֖וֹן עַל־תּוֹצְאוֹתָֽם
16 And they settled in Gilead, in Bashan, and in her built-up areas,
and in all the outlands of the plain over their goings out.

כֻּלָּם֙ הִתְיַחְשׂ֔וּ בִּימֵ֖י יוֹתָ֣ם מֶֽלֶךְ־יְהוּדָ֑ה
וּבִימֵ֖י יָרָבְעָ֥ם מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל
17 All of them were enrolled by genealogy in the days of Jotham king of Judah,
and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.

18 The children of Reuben and the Gadites, and the half band of Manasseh, from the children of ability, soldiers to bear shield and sword and direct a bow, taught in war,
were forty four thousand seven hundred and sixty who came forth as host.

וִיט֥וּר וְנָפִ֖ישׁ וְנוֹדָֽב
19 And they made war with the Hagarites,
with Yetur and Nafish and Nodab.

וַיֵּעָזְר֣וּ עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם וַיִּנָּתְנ֤וּ בְיָדָם֙ הַֽהַגְרִיאִ֔ים וְכֹ֖ל שֶׁ֣עִמָּהֶ֑ם
כִּ֠י לֵאלֹהִ֤ים זָעֲקוּ֙ בַּמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וְנַעְתּ֥וֹר לָהֶ֖ם כִּי־בָ֥טְחוּ בֽוֹ
20 And they were helped against them, and the Hagarites were given into their hand and all that were with them,
for they cried out to God in the battle, and he was petitioned for them, for they trusted in him.

וַיִּשְׁבּ֣וּ מִקְנֵיהֶ֗ם גְּֽמַלֵּיהֶ֞ם חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים אֶ֙לֶף֙ וְצֹ֗אן מָאתַ֤יִם וַחֲמִשִּׁים֙ אֶ֔לֶף וַחֲמוֹרִ֖ים אַלְפָּ֑יִם
וְנֶ֥פֶשׁ אָדָ֖ם מֵ֥אָה אָֽלֶף
21 And they took captive their livestock, their camels, fifty thousand, and sheep, two hundred and fifty thousand, and their asses, two thousand,
and a group of humanity, a hundred thousand.

כִּֽי־חֲלָלִ֤ים רַבִּים֙ נָפָ֔לוּ כִּ֥י מֵהָאֱלֹהִ֖ים הַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה
וַיֵּשְׁב֥וּ תַחְתֵּיהֶ֖ם עַד־הַגֹּלָֽה
22 For many fell profaned because from God was the battle,
and they settled in their stead until the exile.

וּבְנֵ֗י חֲצִי֙ שֵׁ֣בֶט מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה יָשְׁב֖וּ בָּאָ֑רֶץ
מִבָּשָׁ֞ן עַד־בַּ֧עַל חֶרְמ֛וֹן וּשְׂנִ֥יר וְהַר־חֶרְמ֖וֹן הֵ֥מָּה רָבֽוּ
23 And the children of the half band of Manasseh settled in the land.
From Bashan to Baal Hermon, Senir and the hill of Hermon, they increased.

וְאֵ֖לֶּה רָאשֵׁ֣י בֵית־אֲבוֹתָ֑ם
וְעֵ֡פֶר וְיִשְׁעִ֡י וֶאֱלִיאֵ֡ל וְ֠עַזְרִיאֵל וְיִרְמְיָ֨ה וְהוֹדַוְיָ֜ה וְיַחְדִּיאֵ֗ל אֲנָשִׁים֙ גִּבּ֣וֹרֵי חַ֔יִל אַנְשֵׁ֣י שֵׁמ֔וֹת רָאשִׁ֖ים לְבֵ֥ית אֲבוֹתָֽם
24 And these are the heads of the house of their ancestors,
Eifer, and Ishi, and Elyel, and Azriel, and Jeremiah, and Hodaviah, and Yexadyiel, valiant soldiers of ability, soldiers of reputation, heads for the house of their ancestors.

וַיִּֽמְעֲל֔וּ בֵּאלֹהֵ֖י אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם
וַיִּזְנ֗וּ אַחֲרֵי֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י עַמֵּי־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־הִשְׁמִ֥יד אֱלֹהִ֖ים מִפְּנֵיהֶֽם
25 And they trespassed against the God of their ancestors,
and prostituted themselves after the gods of the peoples of the land, that God had exterminated before them.

וַיָּעַר֩ אֱלֹהֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אֶת־ר֣וּחַ ׀ פּ֣וּל מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁ֗וּר וְאֶת־ר֙וּחַ֙ תִּלְּגַ֤ת פִּלְנֶ֙סֶר֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ אַשּׁ֔וּר וַיַּגְלֵם֙ לָראוּבֵנִ֣י וְלַגָּדִ֔י וְלַחֲצִ֖י שֵׁ֣בֶט מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה
וַ֠יְבִיאֵם לַחְלַ֨ח וְחָב֤וֹר וְהָרָא֙ וּנְהַ֣ר גּוֹזָ֔ן עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה
26 And the God of Israel roused the spirit of Pul, king of Ashur, and the spirit of Tilgath-Pilneser, king of Ashur, and he exiled them, of the Reubenites and of the Gadites and of the half band of Manasseh,
and he brought them to Xalax, and Xabor, and Hara, and the river of Gozan, to this day.
