1 Samuel 9

We have popped into the middle of this story. Saul forgot his wallet so he has to borrow a quarter from his companion.

Verse 9 is like a footnote to verse 11.

Verse 17 - עצר coerce (2) coercion (2) conclave (10) contain (25) detain (8) through coercion (1) - a very odd word to be rendered as rule. (At least in any positive sense.) Positive sense would be מלך or משׁל.

Note also verse 16, נגד herald. Also used as a pre-monarchic office for David (2 Samuel 5.2, 6.21).

Samuel is not in favour of the hierarchic (monarchic) model of governance.

2 And he had a child and his name was Saul, choice and fine, and there was no one among the children of Israel better than him,
from his backside, and upward of stature than any of the people.

3 And the donkeys of Kish, the father of Saul, were lost,
and Kish said to Saul his son, Take, please, with you, one from the lads, and arise. Go, seek the donkeys.
