Ezekiel 28

The precision of language here is astonishing. Distinguish iniquity (עון) from injustice (עול). Both are used. JB, NIV, and KJV make little distinction between the stems, allowing evil, injustice, iniquity, wickedness, to be treated as equivalent. Natural language is strange, weird, and imprecise for lots of good reasons, but it is not so vague that we should be careless in our gloss to stem associations. Besides nuance of intent and sense, we should consider recurring sounds and the musical line.

Verse 9, could be profaned rather than started. The stem has both possibilities frequently. חלל profane (119) start (37) commence (13) far be it (10) profanity (2) whistle (1) grotto (1) out question (1) profanation (1).

Verse 13, piercings, נקב, the female of the pair male and female. Possibly could refer to the holes in a musical instrument. JB has the very unhelpful comment, 'translation doubtful'. What translation isn't?

בְּעֵ֨דֶן גַּן־אֱלֹהִ֜ים הָיִ֗יתָ כָּל־אֶ֨בֶן יְקָרָ֤ה מְסֻכָתֶ֙ךָ֙ אֹ֣דֶם פִּטְדָ֞ה וְיָהֲלֹ֗ם תַּרְשִׁ֥ישׁ שֹׁ֙הַם֙ וְיָ֣שְׁפֵ֔ה סַפִּ֣יר נֹ֔פֶךְ וּבָרְקַ֖ת וְזָהָ֑ב מְלֶ֨אכֶת תֻּפֶּ֤יךָ וּנְקָבֶ֙יךָ֙ בָּ֔ךְ בְּי֥וֹם הִבָּרַאֲךָ֖ כּוֹנָֽנוּ	13		In Eden, the garden of God, you were. Every precious stone was your screen, sard, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, emerald, and carbuncle, and gold. אַ֨תְּ־כְּר֔וּב מִמְשַׁ֖ח הַסּוֹכֵ֑ךְ וּנְתַתִּ֗יךָ בְּהַ֨ר קֹ֤דֶשׁ אֱלֹהִים֙ הָיִ֔יתָ בְּת֥וֹךְ אַבְנֵי־אֵ֖שׁ הִתְהַלָּֽכְתָּ	14	~	Overshadowing anointed cherub, and I positioned you. In the holy mountain of God, you were. In the midst of the stones of fire you have walked.	3e	4C	8 23

מֵרֹ֣ב עֲוֺנֶ֗יךָ בְּעֶ֙וֶל֙ רְכֻלָּ֣תְךָ֔ חִלַּ֖לְתָּ מִקְדָּשֶׁ֑יךָ וָֽאוֹצִא־אֵ֤שׁ מִתּֽוֹכְךָ֙ הִ֣יא אֲכָלַ֔תְךָ וָאֶתֶּנְךָ֤ לְאֵ֙פֶר֙ עַל־הָאָ֔רֶץ לְעֵינֵ֖י כָּל־רֹאֶֽיךָ	18		From the multitude of your iniquities, in the injustice of your merchants, you have profaned your holiness. כָּל־יוֹדְעֶ֙יךָ֙ בָּֽעַמִּ֔ים שָׁמְמ֖וּ עָלֶ֑יךָ בַּלָּה֣וֹת הָיִ֔יתָ וְאֵינְךָ֖ עַד־עוֹלָֽם	19		All who know you among the peoples were appalled over you. You will wear out and you will not be, for evermore.	3e	4B	12 12

וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה הִנְנִ֤י עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ צִיד֔וֹן וְנִכְבַּדְתִּ֖י בְּתוֹכֵ֑ךְ וְֽיָדְע֞וּ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֗ה בַּעֲשׂ֥וֹתִי בָ֛הּ שְׁפָטִ֖ים וְנִקְדַּ֥שְׁתִּי בָֽהּ	22		And say, Thus says my Lord Yahweh, Behold me against you, Sidon, and I will be glorified in your midst. וְשִׁלַּחְתִּי־בָ֞הּ דֶּ֤בֶר וָדָם֙ בְּח֣וּצוֹתֶ֔יהָ וְנִפְלַ֤ל חָלָל֙ בְּתוֹכָ֔הּ בְּחֶ֥רֶב עָלֶ֖יהָ מִסָּבִ֑יב וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה	23		And I will send into her, pestilence, and blood into her streets. The profane will fall in her midst by the sword upon her on every side, and they will know that I am Yahweh.	3e	4C	31 7
וְלֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֨ה ע֜וֹד לְבֵ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל סִלּ֤וֹן מַמְאִיר֙ וְק֣וֹץ מַכְאִ֔ב מִכֹּל֙ סְבִ֣יבֹתָ֔ם הַשָּׁאטִ֖ים אוֹתָ֑ם וְיָ֣דְע֔וּ כִּ֥י אֲנִ֖י אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה	24		And it will not be any more for the house of Israel, fretting spurs and brambles from sorrow, from all that are round about them, those who scourged them. And they will know that I am the Lord Yahweh.	3e	4C	29 11
כֹּֽה־אָמַר֮ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ בְּקַבְּצִ֣י ׀ אֶת־בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל מִן־הָֽעַמִּים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָפֹ֣צוּ בָ֔ם וְנִקְדַּ֥שְׁתִּי בָ֖ם לְעֵינֵ֣י הַגּוֹיִ֑ם וְיָֽשְׁבוּ֙ עַל־אַדְמָתָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תִּי לְעַבְדִּ֥י לְיַעֲקֹֽב	25		Thus says my Lord Yahweh, When I have collected the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they were dispersed, then I will be sanctified in them in the sight of the nations, and they will settle on their ground that I gave to my servant, to Jacob.	3e	4B	37 19
וְיָשְׁב֣וּ עָלֶיהָ֮ לָבֶטַח֒ וּבָנ֤וּ בָתִּים֙ וְנָטְע֣וּ כְרָמִ֔ים וְיָשְׁב֖וּ לָבֶ֑טַח בַּעֲשׂוֹתִ֣י שְׁפָטִ֗ים בְּכֹ֨ל הַשָּׁאטִ֤ים אֹתָם֙ מִסְּבִ֣יבוֹתָ֔ם וְיָ֣דְע֔וּ כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם	26		And they will settle on it confidently, and they will build houses, and they will plant vineyards, and they will settle confidently, when I have undertaken judgments in all who scourged them round about them, and they will know that I am Yahweh their God.	3d	4C	26 30
