1 Chronicles 6

It is fascinating what errors are accidentally discovered while rendering the chapters that are full of names. Spelling inconsistencies and errors, accidentally doubled words, a chapter done that I had not put on the blog, links I missed in the manually controlled table of contents (they will all be found eventually).

Verses 46-48 have long recitations, Verse 63 has a curiously placed atnah as if to rest for a moment was to say, Remember the wilderness. When one is in that part of the world, it is pretty hard to forget wilderness or dry hills or rocky outcrops.

We should not put down these parts of the text too much. Music and singing in particular, is clearly a central part of the ancient worship.

This would be a good time to thank all the musicians that have encouraged me - all of them? Can I remember? (That would make it an autobiography.)

• School 1953-62, I remember at about age 10 a certain Havard whom we called Turkey. I wanted to learn harmony, but he could not or would not answer that most basic question. For 9 years H. T. G. Forster was the choirmaster. He was a product of 1000 years of abuse, and was a seriously disturbed and violent man. God, how did I ever become a musician or ever have respect for ministers of religion! Think about all the people named. Did they have problems with violence or self-control? Those beginnings ensured I would not really ever take performance or composition seriously. But I persisted as a singer.
• University and Early work, Montreal, 1963-68, Normal Hurrle, also later briefly in Victoria 1980, Hadfield from Winnipeg briefly, Gerald Wheeler, Montreal, Jan Simons.
• First years of Marriage, Ottawa, Brian Law. 1969-74. When we left Ottawa, we were given a Jerusalem Bible which I still use. The thick concordance and the Greek English interlinear, I do not use any more since there are concordances online and I have my own developing one in an Oracle database. And Greek? God knows Greek but I do not. Many old friends and acquaintances from this time have done well in music, notably Timothy Findlay, Paul Halley, Kevin Reeves, Barbara Clark.
• Second city stop in our 50 years of marriage, Toronto, 1974-77. John Tuttle stands out. The remainder were minor figures whose names I do not remember. I did not sing much in Toronto. John sent on my daughter to Cambridge, a place I had wanted to sing at since school days. I didn't get there but she did. It is now her 20th anniversary as Director of Music for Selwyn College.
• Third city stop, Calgary, 1978-80, Terry Fullerton, and Tony Petti. 
• Fourth and current city stop, 1980-..., Victoria, Ian Galliford, Heather Crook, Matthew Larkin, Selena James, Bruce Pullan, John Washburn, Garth McPhee, and my own daughter Sarah, and most recently David Stratkauskis. (I never sang specifically for Janos Sandor, but his influence is in my memory.) Half-way through my life, I conducted briefly. What an ear-opener conducting is. 
• I lost my voice following cancer treatments. I was known as a cantor, and sang some tenor solos, but I always regretted not having the discipline to really study and practice. I am secretly glad that I have met some young tenors who are doing very well today and moving on to national and international careers. (I am only slightly jealous. I can still sing countertenor but the noise must be pretty awful.) Victoria has become a go to place for young singers. Our downtown Anglican churches are full of young choral scholars, and a few organ scholars too.

Sorry if I left you out or misspelled your name. The odds of your reading this are very small. Who might influence or support me today? I am very encouraged by the teachers at the Conservatory and the University and the visiting performers. One day perhaps, we will get some interaction on this ancient music.

Anyway, if those are my 'named' folks, imagine the stories behind these names...
