1 Samuel 10

This is the last of the books with more than 10 chapters remaining. After this, there are 9 books remaining with 10 chapters still to do, one with 9, one with 8, two with 7, one with 6, 3 with 5, one with 2 and one with 1. That should add up to 145 left, 784 done. The order in which I attack them is subject to whim, but generally speaking I am working from the chapters with the most guesses by my prediction algorithm to those with the fewest guesses.

This one on Saul makes one wonder what sort of person he was known as. I have great sympathy for him. But he was not suited to his calling. Why would God call such a one to be the monarch? What was it that the people deserved? Why did they reject Samuel and Yahweh and demand a king? The people who knew him even invented a proverb about him. What does that proverb riddle us?

I couldn't resist a nod to Star Wars in the penultimate verse.

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר דּ֣וֹד שָׁא֑וּל הַגִּֽידָה־נָּ֣א לִ֔י מָֽה־אָמַ֥ר לָכֶ֖ם שְׁמוּאֵֽל	15		And the uncle of Saul said, Make clear for me, please, what Samuel said to you.	3e	4B	6 13
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שָׁאוּל֙ אֶל־דּוֹד֔וֹ הַגֵּ֤ד הִגִּיד֙ לָ֔נוּ כִּ֥י נִמְצְא֖וּ הָאֲתֹנ֑וֹת וְאֶת־דְּבַ֤ר הַמְּלוּכָה֙ לֹֽא־הִגִּ֣יד ל֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר אָמַ֥ר שְׁמוּאֵֽל	16		And Saul said to his uncle, He made it clear to us that the donkeys were found. But the word of the kingdom, he did not make clear to him, as Samuel had said.	3e	4C	22 17
וַיַּצְעֵ֤ק שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶת־הָעָ֔ם אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה הַמִּצְפָּֽה	17		And Samuel called forth the people to Yahweh, to Mizpah.	3e	4C	15

וַיַּקְרֵ֣ב שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל אֵ֖ת כָּל־שִׁבְטֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּלָּכֵ֖ד שֵׁ֥בֶט בִּנְיָמִֽן	20		And Samuel had all the sceptres of Israel approach. And he caught the sceptre of Benjamin.	3e	4B	13 9

וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּ־עוֹד֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה הֲבָ֥א ע֖וֹד הֲלֹ֣ם אִ֑ישׁ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֔ה הִנֵּה־ה֥וּא נֶחְבָּ֖א אֶל־הַכֵּלִֽים	22		And they asked still in Yahweh, Has such still come here? And Yahweh said, Behold, he is camouflaged by the cargo.	3e	4B	13 14
וַיָּרֻ֙צוּ֙ וַיִּקָּחֻ֣הוּ מִשָּׁ֔ם וַיִּתְיַצֵּ֖ב בְּת֣וֹךְ הָעָ֑ם וַיִּגְבַּהּ֙ מִכָּל־הָעָ֔ם מִשִּׁכְמ֖וֹ וָמָֽעְלָה	23		And they raced, and laid hold of him from there. And he presented himself in the midst of people. And he was aloft over all the people, from his backside and upward.	3e	4B	19 13
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֜ל אֶל־כָּל־הָעָ֗ם הַרְּאִיתֶם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּֽחַר־בּ֣וֹ יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֛י אֵ֥ין כָּמֹ֖הוּ בְּכָל־הָעָ֑ם וַיָּרִ֧עוּ כָל־הָעָ֛ם וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ יְחִ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ	24		And Samuel said to all the people, Have you seen whom Yahweh has chosen, for there is none like him in all the people. And all the people raised a shout, and they said, May the king live.	3c	4B	29 15
וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר שְׁמוּאֵ֜ל אֶל־הָעָ֗ם אֵ֚ת מִשְׁפַּ֣ט הַמְּלֻכָ֔ה וַיִּכְתֹּ֣ב בַּסֵּ֔פֶר וַיַּנַּ֖ח לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיְשַׁלַּ֧ח שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל אֶת־כָּל־הָעָ֖ם אִ֥ישׁ לְבֵיתֽוֹ	25		And Samuel spoke to the people the framework of the kingdom, and he wrote in a book to be left in the presence of Yahweh. And Samuel sent all the people, each to its own house.	3c	4C	28 14
וְגַ֨ם־שָׁא֔וּל הָלַ֥ךְ לְבֵית֖וֹ גִּבְעָ֑תָה וַיֵּלְכ֣וּ עִמּ֔וֹ הַחַ֕יִל אֲשֶׁר־נָגַ֥ע אֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּלִבָּֽם	26		And even Saul went to his own house toward Gibeah. And the force went with him, whose heart God touched.	3e	4B	12 18
וּבְנֵ֧י בְלִיַּ֣עַל אָמְר֗וּ מַה־יֹּשִׁעֵ֙נוּ֙ זֶ֔ה וַיִּבְזֻ֕הוּ וְלֹֽא־הֵבִ֥יאוּ ל֖וֹ מִנְחָ֑ה וַיְהִ֖י כְּמַחֲרִֽישׁ	27		And the children of worthlessness said, How will this save us? And they despised him and did not bring him a gift. But he was as one who is deaf.	3c	4B	25 6
