1 Samuel 10

This is the last of the books with more than 10 chapters remaining. After this, there are 9 books remaining with 10 chapters still to do, one with 9, one with 8, two with 7, one with 6, 3 with 5, one with 2 and one with 1. That should add up to 145 left, 784 done. The order in which I attack them is subject to whim, but generally speaking I am working from the chapters with the most guesses by my prediction algorithm to those with the fewest guesses.

This one on Saul makes one wonder what sort of person he was known as. I have great sympathy for him. But he was not suited to his calling. Why would God call such a one to be the monarch? What was it that the people deserved? Why did they reject Samuel and Yahweh and demand a king? The people who knew him even invented a proverb about him. What does that proverb riddle us?

I couldn't resist a nod to Star Wars in the penultimate verse.

1 Samuel 10 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And Samuel took a vial of oil to infuse onto his head and kissed him,
and he said, Is it not that Yahweh has anointed you for his inheritance as herald?

2 When you go today from me, then you will find two persons by the tomb of Rachel, at the border of Benjamin in Tseltsah,
and they will say to you, The donkeys are found which you have gone to seek, and behold your father has abandoned the matter of the donkeys, and is anxious about you, saying, What will I do for my son?

3 And you will renew from there, and thereafter, and you will come to the oak of Tabor, and three men will find you there, going up to God at Bethel,
one bearing three young kids, and another bearing three round loaves of bread, and another bearing a skin-bottle of wine.

4 And they will wish you peace,
and they will give you two bread, that you will receive from their hand.

5 B Afterwards you will come to the hillock of God, where there is a post of the Philistines.
And it will happen when you come there to the city, that you will come across a company of prophets descending from the high place, and in their presence, lute and timbrel and flute and harp, and they will prophesy.

6 And the spirit of Yahweh will thrive over you and you will prophesy with them,
and you will be changed to another man.

7 And it will be that when these signs come to you,
do for yourself what you find to your hand, for God is with you.

8 And you will go down before me to the Gilgal, and behold I will descend to you to offer up burnt offerings, to offer peace offerings,
Seven days you will wait in hope until I come to you, and I will make known to you what you will do.

9 And it was when he faced his backside to go from Samuel, that God changed his heart to another,
and all these signs came in that day.
3d 4C 28
14
10 And they came there toward Gibeah, and behold, the company of prophets encountered him,
and the spirit of God thrived over him, and he prophesied among them.
3e 4C 19
17
11 And it was that all who knew him previously saw, and behold, he was prophesying with prophets.
And the people said each to his friend, What is this? Is the son of Kish, even Saul, among the prophets?
3e 4B 22
24
12 And each answered from there, and said, And who is their father?
So it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
3d 4B 14
14
13 And he finished prophesying, and came to the high place. 3e 3g 12
14 And the uncle of Saul said to him and to his lad, Where did you go?
And he said, To seek the donkeys. When we saw that they were not, we came to Samuel.
3d 4B 17
23
15 And the uncle of Saul said,
Make clear for me, please, what Samuel said to you.
3e 4B 6
13
16 And Saul said to his uncle, He made it clear to us that the donkeys were found.
But the word of the kingdom, he did not make clear to him, as Samuel had said.
3e 4C 22
17
17 And Samuel called forth the people to Yahweh, to Mizpah. 3e 4C 15
18 And he said to the children of Israel, Thus says Yahweh the God of Israel, I myself brought Israel up from Egypt,
and delivered you from the hand of Egypt, and from the hand of all the kingdoms that gripped you.
3d 4C 35
23
19 And you, today, you have refused your God, who himself saved you from all your evils and your troubles, and you said to him, But a king, you will set over us.
So now, present yourselves in the presence of Yahweh, by your sceptres and by your captains.
3e 4B 43
18
20 And Samuel had all the sceptres of Israel approach.
And he caught the sceptre of Benjamin.
3e 4B 13
9
21 And he had the sceptre of Benjamin approach by their families, and he caught from the family of Matri,
and he caught Saul child of Kish, but they sought him and he was not found.
3e 4C 24
16
22 And they asked still in Yahweh, Has such still come here?
And Yahweh said, Behold, he is camouflaged by the cargo.
3e 4B 13
14
23 And they raced, and laid hold of him from there. And he presented himself in the midst of people.
And he was aloft over all the people, from his backside and upward.
3e 4B 19
13
24 And Samuel said to all the people, Have you seen whom Yahweh has chosen, for there is none like him in all the people.
And all the people raised a shout, and they said, May the king live.
3c 4B 29
15
25 And Samuel spoke to the people the framework of the kingdom, and he wrote in a book to be left in the presence of Yahweh.
And Samuel sent all the people, each to its own house.
3c 4C 28
14
26 And even Saul went to his own house toward Gibeah.
And the force went with him, whose heart God touched.
3e 4B 12
18

27 And the children of worthlessness said, How will this save us? And they despised him and did not bring him a gift.
But he was as one who is deaf.
