2 Samuel 1:19-27

This is an example of sheer beauty in the composition and execution of the passage. It clearly demonstrates what can be done with music and limited melodic structures.

2 Samuel 1: Syllables 267 Longest recitation 12 Tenor B 35.58%

There is a performance here. You will hear variations from the above. I have not checked the accents against Aleppo. For the most part the performance is not marred by the differences. I have also not heard the 6 other performances that are on the shared resource here and here. I did a string accompaniment to this that you can hear also here.

1 Samuel 25

8 and counting ...

It is difficult to distinguish Davids lads from Nabal's lads. The form of address is formal and may well not be as polite as is laid out. The youngsters of David may imply a kind of protection racket. Now I know a good reader would not want to attribute anything bad to David, but the author clearly wants us to think poorly of Nabal - good grief, what a name (Senseless) he is saddled with! The text invites Nabal to consider David as his son, and take care of the youngsters, give them work(?), or just pay them. Senseless might not want to have that responsibility. So he loses his life and his wife. Now I ask you, is this reasonable? Do we need to be told that Nabal is 'intransigent' or churlish (KJV). The KJV is clearly interpretive. Exposing an ancient protection racket may not have been in the interests of the translators. I would go too far myself if I translated נערים as thugs. (Though I have used gangs for ראשׁים a few times.)

JB supports my suspicion that all is not sweetness and light.
The shearing is a festive occasion on which the rich sheep-owner should display his generosity. David takes advantage of this to demand the sum that nomads levy on neighbouring villages in return for the 'protection' they afford by abstaining from pillage and by restraining marauders. This is called the 'law of brotherhood'.
JB uses the gloss soldier for these youngsters / lads נער. I have used soldier sometimes for אישׁ, so I use it here where the word changes from נער to אישׁ.

My usage for these two at the moment is this:

אישׁ man (500) each (426) person (383) men (358) anyone (80) soldier (57) everyone (56) -- (54) -one (31) such (11) adult (8) each person (7) representative (6) another (4) each man (4) other (3) personal (3) another person (1) cohort (1) each every (1) every person (1) hero (1) real (1) ride (1) someone (1) spouse (1) there were any (1)
נער lad (107) youth (93) lass (60) lads (48) youngster (26) toss (5) brush off (2) brushed off (2) brush (1) tinder (1) tossed around (1) tossed out (1) yell (1) young (1) young lass (1) youthful (1)

You can see some artificial hapaxes created in the process of translation. One of interest is real. Where did I do this? In Isaiah 46:8 where אישׁ is used as a verb. Another is ride, used as rider in Psalm 147. This kind of analysis of the English phrases is full of exceptions. The algorithm strips pronouns, prepositions, helping verbs, etc and turns 'make yourselves for real' into 'real'. Well, at least it exposes one decision among many. For ride, the algorithm converted rider to rid (rule of 'er') and added the silent e - a generic operation whenever a suffix is removed like ing or er or plurals, but there are a host of exceptions and sub rules on repeating letters and so on. I allowed the overlap with רכב (chariot, rider etc) once for the sake of the English idiom horse and rider. (I am not entirely tone deaf to tongues though it may seem so.)

Verse 14. One of the lads said to Abigail that Nabal pounced on David's messengers. The stem יעט is used largely for bird of prey. The lad supports the protection of David. Clearly Nabal was rich. The actions of Abigail over their substance support this. So the protection to the shepherding community is beneficial. And we glimpse the role of women. The wife has control over all the accumulating wealth.

The stem נבל occurs 20 times in this chapter. Besides its use as a name, Nabal, these are the glosses I have allowed for it (in decreasing order of frequency): corpse, lute, senseless, wither, skin-bottle,  demean, jar.

Abigail's remarkable speech holds the image of the sling. Enemies themselves embedded in the palm of the sling. What a curious image. A reversal of the normal action of the use of a sling.

1 Samuel 18

Music over prophecy here. Yet brutality seems to be the norm for behaviour in those days. The Bible underscores the history of humanity, red in tooth and claw.

1 Samuel 18 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And it happened as he finished speaking to Saul, that the very self of Jonathan was fastened into the very self of David,
and Jonathan loved him as his very self.
3e 4B 27
13
2 And Saul laid hold of him in that day,
and not did permit him to return to the house of his father.
3e 4B 11
10
3 So Jonathan and David cut a covenant,
in that he loved him as his very self.
3c 4A 12
10
4 And Jonathan stripped the mantle that was over him and gave it to David,
and his shirt, and to his sword, and to his bow, and to his sash.
3e 4B 22
16
5 And David went out wherever Saul sent him with insight. And Saul set him over the warriors.
And he was well thought of in the eyes of all the people and also in the eyes of the servants of Saul.
3e 4C 30
18
6 And it was when they entered, when David returned from striking the Philistine, that the women came out from all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to encounter Saul the king,
with timbrels with gladness and with triangles.
3e 4C 43

7 And the women answered as they gamboled, and said,
Saul struck his thousands, but David his tens of thousands.
3d 4C 16

8 And Saul burned excessively, and it was irritating in his eyes, this word, and he said, They have given to David the ten of thousands but to me they give the thousands,
and more will be his, surely the kingdom.
3e 4C 38
7
9 And Saul had an eye on David,
from that day and thereafter.
3e 4B 9
8
10 And it happened afterwards that the evil spirit of God thrived on Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house, but David performed music by his hand day in day out.
And there was a spear in the hand of Saul.
3d 4C 41
8
11 And Saul hurled the spear, and said, I will strike David, and into the house wall.
But David circled from before him two times.
3d 4C 20
12
12 And Saul feared in the presence of David,
for Yahweh was with him and from Saul had departed.

12

13 And Saul put him aside from being with him and set him as his chief of a thousand,
and he went out and he came in before the people.
3e 4C 17
10

14 And David was, in his every way, insightful,
and Yahweh was with him.

4

15 And Saul saw that he was very insightful,
and he was in terror before his face.
3e 4B 11

16 And all Israel and Judah loved David,
for he was going out and coming in before them.

17 And Saul said to David, Behold my daughter Merab, the oldest. Her I will give you as wife. But become to me a worthy son and fight the wars of Yahweh.
And Saul said, Let not my hand be against him, but against him let be the hand of the Philistines.
3e 4C 43

20 But Michal, the daughter of Saul, loved David,
and they told Saul, and the word was fit in his eyes.
3d 4B 12

21 And Saul said I will give her to him, and she will become for him a trap, that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.
And Saul said to David, A second time you will be son-in-law for me today.
3d 4C 20

1 Samuel 14

Again we get this use of great in KJV for God. JB fearlessly has "the very panic of God". Of course that could be an objective genitive. I.e. as NIV has it "a panic sent by God". My gloss is apprehension.

The ark of verse 18 is likely the ephod of verse 3. JB suggests the ephod was an embarrassment.

There is something both funny and awkward about this story, a sort of Winnie the Pooh feel, and also the feel of a mad king, arbitrarily superstitious. Rule by fear is an old tradition, whether deliberate or not. The exhaustion of the people is not an unexpected outcome.

The English gloss here, an adverb of place, does not give the tension of the word הלם in Hebrew, a word suggesting stamping one's foot. The tug of war between the impulsive Saul and one of his checks on absolute power, in this case, the priest, can be seen in the repeated use of this word in verses 37-38.

It is clear that Twitter gives support to impulsiveness. And the people in their own silence say, do what seems good to you. We need to do more than stamp our feet to change minds.

Yet Saul לדד the kingdom, verse 47. This is the same word as caught in the trial by lot between Saul and Jonathon. There is no object for the word ירשׁיע from רשׁע. Why should to them be assumed? The Hebrew condemns Saul for his actions. Saul was a leader with serious disability. The people went along with him, except in the case of Jonathan.

If the people elect impulsive leaders, they abdicate their decision making. This is true in every human organization. There is no escape from our call to govern well. The framers of constitutions have to recognize the need to curtail absolute power. In Canada, our notwithstanding clause is a rip in the fabric. It remains to be seen if the impulsive leader of the Ontario conservative party will get his narrow and vindictive way with the constitution in our country.

6 And Jonathan said to the lad, his cargo bearer, Come, let us cross through to the garrison of these fore-skinned. Maybe Yahweh will deal to us,
for nothing will detain Yahweh from saving, by many or by few.
3d 4C 40
15

7 And his cargo bearer said to him, Do all that is in your heart.
Push on, for yourself. Here am I with you according to your heart.
3e 4C 17
11

8 And Jonathan said, Behold, we will pass through to the soldiers,
and will disclose ourselves to them.
3d 4B 19
7

9 If thus they say to us, Be mute until we join you,
then we will stand still beneath, and not go up to them.
3e 4C 17
15

10 But if thus they say, Come up to us, then we will go up, for Yahweh has given them into our hands,
and this to us will be the sign.
3e 4C 24
6
11 And the two of them disclosed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines.
And the Philistines said, Behold the Hebrews emerging from the holes where they were camouflaged.
3e 4C 13
22

12 And the men of the garrison answered Yonathan and his cargo bearer, and said, Come up to us that we may acquaint with you a thing.
And Yonathan said to his cargo bearer, Go up after me, for Yahweh has given them into the hand of Israel.
3e 4C 36
27
13 And Yonathan went up on his hands and on his feet, and his cargo bearer after him,
and they fell before Yonathan, and his cargo bearer put them to death after him.
3e 4B 21
19

14 And it was a first strike that Yonathan and his cargo bearer struck, about twenty men,
about a half a furrow of an acre of a field.
3c 4B 25
11

15 And there was apprehension in the camp, in the field, and in all the people. The garrison, the destroyers were apprehensive, even them,
and the land shuddered, and it was to the apprehension of God.
3e 4C 28
14

16 And the lookouts for Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin saw,
and behold, the tumult softened, and went, and was smitten.
3c 4C 15
14

17 And Saul said to the people that were with him, Take a census, please, and see who has gone from us.
And they took a census and behold, there was no Yonathan or his cargo bearer.
3d 4B 22
16

18 And Saul said to Achiyah, Come close with the ark of God.
(For the ark of God was in that day with the children of Israel.)
3c 4C 18
17
19 And it happened while Saul was speaking to the priest, that the tumult that was in the camp of the Philistines went on and on, and increasing,
And Saul said to the priest, Gather in your hand.
3c 4C 31
14

20 And Saul and all the people that were with him were mustered, and they came to the battle.
And behold each sword was against his friend, with very great discomfort.
3e 4C 22
20

21 And the Hebrews who were for the Philistines, as previously, who went up with them into the camp round about,
even they were with Israel who were with Saul and Yonathan.
3d 4C 26
19
22 And all the men of Israel who had been camouflaged in mount Ephraim heard that the Philistines had withdrawn.
And they themselves also followed closely after them into the battle.
3d 4C 21
15
23 And Yahweh saved Israel in that day,
and the battle passed through to Bethaven.
3c 4A 13
11

24 And the men of Israel were harassed in that day,
when Saul made an avowal with the people, saying, Cursed is the person that eats bread till evening that I may be avenged from my enemies. And no one of the people tasted bread.
3e 4B 11
40
25 And all the land came into the forest,
and there was honey on the surface of the field.

26 And the people came to the forest and behold, honey gushed,
but no one afforded his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath.
3e 4C 16
16

27 But Yonathan had not heard the oath of his father with the people, and he sent out the endmost part of the rod that was in his hand, and he dipped it in the forest honey.
And he let his hand return into his mouth, and his eyes were enlightened.
3e 4C 39
13

28 And someone answered from the people and said, With an oath your father has adjured the people, saying, Cursed is the person that eats bread today.
And the people are tired.
3d 4C 36
5

30 ~ Indeed, for if only today the people had eaten from the spoil of their enemies who they found,
then now would not the strike increase against the Philistines?
3d 4C 19
11

and the people ate over the blood.
3c 4C 26
8

33 And they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin to Yahweh, to eat over the blood.
And he said, You have been treacherous. Roll to me today a great stone.
3d 4C 24
16

34 And Saul said, Disperse among the people and say to them, Bring close to me, each his bull, and each his lamb, and butcher here, and you eat and do not sin to Yahweh to eat by the blood.
And all the people came close, each his bull in his hand that night, and they butchered there.
3c 4C 49

36 And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night and loot them until the light of the morning, and let us leave no trace of them. And they said, All that is good in your eyes, do.
And the priest said, Let us come near, here, to God.

37 And Saul inquired in God, Will I go down after the Philistines? Will you give them into the hand of Israel?
But he did not answer in that day.
3e 4C 25

45 And the people said to Saul, Will Yonathan die who has done this great salvation in Israel? Far be it. Yahweh lives. Not a hair of his head will fall to the land, for with God he has acted this day.
So the people ransomed Yonathan and he did not die.
