1 Samuel 25

8 and counting ...

It is difficult to distinguish Davids lads from Nabal's lads. The form of address is formal and may well not be as polite as is laid out. The youngsters of David may imply a kind of protection racket. Now I know a good reader would not want to attribute anything bad to David, but the author clearly wants us to think poorly of Nabal - good grief, what a name (Senseless) he is saddled with! The text invites Nabal to consider David as his son, and take care of the youngsters, give them work(?), or just pay them. Senseless might not want to have that responsibility. So he loses his life and his wife. Now I ask you, is this reasonable? Do we need to be told that Nabal is 'intransigent' or churlish (KJV). The KJV is clearly interpretive. Exposing an ancient protection racket may not have been in the interests of the translators. I would go too far myself if I translated נערים as thugs. (Though I have used gangs for ראשׁים a few times.)

JB supports my suspicion that all is not sweetness and light.
The shearing is a festive occasion on which the rich sheep-owner should display his generosity. David takes advantage of this to demand the sum that nomads levy on neighbouring villages in return for the 'protection' they afford by abstaining from pillage and by restraining marauders. This is called the 'law of brotherhood'.
JB uses the gloss soldier for these youngsters / lads נער. I have used soldier sometimes for אישׁ, so I use it here where the word changes from נער to אישׁ.

My usage for these two at the moment is this:

אישׁ man (500) each (426) person (383) men (358) anyone (80) soldier (57) everyone (56) -- (54) -one (31) such (11) adult (8) each person (7) representative (6) another (4) each man (4) other (3) personal (3) another person (1) cohort (1) each every (1) every person (1) hero (1) real (1) ride (1) someone (1) spouse (1) there were any (1)
נער lad (107) youth (93) lass (60) lads (48) youngster (26) toss (5) brush off (2) brushed off (2) brush (1) tinder (1) tossed around (1) tossed out (1) yell (1) young (1) young lass (1) youthful (1)

You can see some artificial hapaxes created in the process of translation. One of interest is real. Where did I do this? In Isaiah 46:8 where אישׁ is used as a verb. Another is ride, used as rider in Psalm 147. This kind of analysis of the English phrases is full of exceptions. The algorithm strips pronouns, prepositions, helping verbs, etc and turns 'make yourselves for real' into 'real'. Well, at least it exposes one decision among many. For ride, the algorithm converted rider to rid (rule of 'er') and added the silent e - a generic operation whenever a suffix is removed like ing or er or plurals, but there are a host of exceptions and sub rules on repeating letters and so on. I allowed the overlap with רכב (chariot, rider etc) once for the sake of the English idiom horse and rider. (I am not entirely tone deaf to tongues though it may seem so.)

Verse 14. One of the lads said to Abigail that Nabal pounced on David's messengers. The stem יעט is used largely for bird of prey. The lad supports the protection of David. Clearly Nabal was rich. The actions of Abigail over their substance support this. So the protection to the shepherding community is beneficial. And we glimpse the role of women. The wife has control over all the accumulating wealth.

The stem נבל occurs 20 times in this chapter. Besides its use as a name, Nabal, these are the glosses I have allowed for it (in decreasing order of frequency): corpse, lute, senseless, wither, skin-bottle,  demean, jar.

Abigail's remarkable speech holds the image of the sling. Enemies themselves embedded in the palm of the sling. What a curious image. A reversal of the normal action of the use of a sling.

1 Samuel 25 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And Samuel died and all Israel collected themselves and wailed for him, and they entombed him in his house in Ramah.
And David arose and came down to the wilderness of Paran.
3e 4C 29
2 And a man in Maon whose doings were in Carmel, and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep and a thousand she-goats.
And he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.
3d 4B 34
3 And the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife, Abigail.
And the woman was of good insight, and of beautiful form, but the man was intransigent, and evil in his practices, and he was a Calebite.
3d 4C 14
4 And David heard in the wilderness,
that Nabal was shearing his sheep.
3e 4A 8
5 And David sent out ten youngsters.
And David said to the youngsters, Go up to Carmel and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name, in peace.
3e 4C 11
6 And you will say thus to him who lives,
Both to you, peace, and your house, peace, and all that are yours, peace.
3e 4C 7
7 And now, I have heard that you have shearers.
Now, your shepherds that were with us, we did not humiliate them, and nothing whatever was absent for them, all the days they were in Carmel.
3e 4C 10
8 Ask your lads and they will tell you. So let the youngsters find grace in your eyes, for on a good day we come.
Give, if you will, what you find to your hand for your servants, and for your son, for David.
3e 4C 30
9 And the youngsters of David came and they spoke to Nabal according to all these words in the name of David,
and they rested.
3c 4B 26
10 And Nabal answered the servants of David, and said, Who is David and who is the son of Jesse?
Today servants are multiplied who break out, each from the presence of his master.
3e 4C 21
11 And will I take my bread, and my water, and my slaughter that I have slaughtered for my shearers,
and give it to soldiers when I do not know where they are from?
3e 4C 24
12 So the youngsters of David turned to their own way.
And they returned, and they came, and they made clear to him according to all these words.
3e 4B 11
13 And David said to his soldiers, Wear each his sword. And they wore each his sword, and even David wore his sword.
And they came up after David about four hundred soldiers, and two hundred sat over the cargo.
3e 4C 32
14 And a youth, one from the lads, told Abigail, wife of Nabal, saying,
Behold, David sent messengers from the wilderness to bless our lord, and he pounced on them.
3c 4B 22
15 But the soldiers were very good to us,
and we were not humiliated, and nothing whatever was absent to us all the days we have walked with them when we were in the field.
3e 4C 11
16 A wall they were over us, both night and day,
all the days we were with them tending the flock.
3d 4B 13
17 And now know, and see what you will do, for evil will find an end for our lord, and against all his house,
for he is a child of worthlessness for one speaking to him.
3c 4C 27
18 And Abigail was swift, and took two hundred loaves of bread, and two skin-bottles of wine, and five sheep made up, and five bushels of parched grain, and a hundred bunches of raisins, and two hundred pressed lumps,
and put them on the asses.
3e 4C 45
19 And she said to her lads, Cross over before me. Behold, I am coming after you.
But her man, the senseless, she did not tell.
3e 4C 20
20 And it was as she rode on the ass, and she went down the hill in secret, and behold, David and his men were descending to encounter her,
and she met them.
3e 4C 34
21 And David had said, Surely, falsely, I have kept all that this one had in the wilderness, and nothing whatever was absent from all that is his.
And he has returned to me evil instead of good.
3e 4C 33
22 Thus do God to the enemies of David and thus again,
if I leave a residue from all that is his till the morning, who piss on the house wall.
3c 4B 16
23 And Abigail saw David, and she was swift, and came down from the ass,
and she fell, for the anger of David, on her face, and prostrated herself to the earth.
3e 4C 21
24 And she fell at his feet, and she said, On me, myself, my lord, the iniquity,
and let please your maidservant speak in your ears, and hear the words of your maidservant.
3e 4C 17
25 Please let not my lord set his heart to each person of this worthless Nabal, for as his name, so is he the senseless. His name and his senselessness is with him.
But I, your maidservant, I had not seen the youngsters of my lord whom you sent.
3d 4C 35
26 And now my lord, Yahweh lives and you live, that Yahweh has withheld you from entering with blood, and has saved your hand for yourself.
And now may your enemies become as Nabal, and those who seek evil for my lord.
3e 4C 35
27 And now this blessing that your handmaid has brought to my lord,
so let it be given to the youngsters, the ones walking in the strides of my lord.
3e 4B 18
28 f Forbear, please, with the transgression of your maidservant,
for Yahweh will construct for my lord a faithful house, for the wars of Yahweh, my lord fights, and evil has not been found in you in your days.
3d 4C 9
29 Yet a human has arisen to pursue you, and to seek your integrity, but the integrity of my lord will be straitened in the straits of the living, even Yahweh your God.
And the integrity of your enemies, he will sling into the midst of the palm of the sling.
3e 4C 15
30 And it will be when Yahweh has dealt with my lord according to all that he has spoken, the good concerning you,
and has commissioned you as herald over Israel,
3d 4C 24
31 Then this will not be for you, for a drawing forth, or a stumbling-block of heart to my lord, either the pouring out of blood for nothing, or that my lord should save for himself.
But Yahweh has done good to my lord. And remember your maidservant.
3e 4C 31
32 And David said to Abigail,
Blessed is Yahweh the God of Israel, who has sent you this day to encounter me.
3c 4C 9
33 And blessed is your discretion. And blessed are you,
who have restrained me this day from entering with blood, and from saving by my hand for myself.
3e 4C 9

34 For as Yahweh the God of Israel lives, who has withheld me from hurting you,
unless you had been swift and had come to encounter me, without fail there would not be left to Nabal till the light of the morning, any who piss on the house wall.
3c 4B 24
35 And David received from her hand what she had brought for him,
and to her he said, Go up in peace to your house. See, I have heard with your voice, and I bear your presence.
3e 4C 15
36 And Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, he was partying in his house like the partying of the king, and the heart of the senseless was merry upon him, and he was excessively intoxicated,
so she did not tell him a thing, lesser or greater, until the light of the morning.
3d 4C 39
37 And it happened in the morning, when the wine was gone out from Nabal, that his wife told him these words.
And his heart died within him, and he he was like stone.
3e 4C 25
38 And it was in about ten days,
that Yahweh plagued Nabal and he died.
3c 4B 9
39 And David heard that Nabal was dead. And he said, Blessed is Yahweh who strove the strife of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and has kept back his servant from evil. And Yahweh has returned the hurt of Nabal on his head.
And David reached out and spoke with Abigail to take her as his wife.
3e 4C 50
40 And the servants of David came to Abigail to Carmel,
and they spoke to her, saying, David sent us to you to take you as his wife.
3d 4C 16
41 And she arose and prostrated herself, nostrils earthward.
