The Torah in Music according to the Haïk-Vantoura deciphering key

 No section of Scripture is sung more often than these five books. Yet few would sing them in this form. I have gone on with this deciphering key since 2010 when I first heard of it at the Oxford Conference on the Psalms. The tone of voice is restored with these melodies and the leitmotifs and connections of Scripture  with Scripture are rediscovered.

I am convinced that the music will bear much study.

Exodus 36

When I completed chapter 26 yesterday, this one was 79% guessed by my algorithms, so I decided to finish Exodus. There are differences in spelling which have led the algorithms sometimes to differing renditions from chapters other than chapter 26. A curious result that may bear further analysis. E.g. אחות (sister?) vs אחת (one or other). Perhaps this spelling change is deliberate. So I surmise that in chapter 26 we have direct speech from the Maker. In this chapter we may not be so presumptuous with indirect speech concerning the makers. (There's theology in those mater lectiones).

Note that in Bob's Bible, I have put the English text of all completed books into a simple PDF for reading and comments. The shared location supports comments. Is the text readable on its own? Of course I did this close translation for the music, and other nefarious reasons, but I would welcome serious feedback.

While there are many workers noted in the text, they are subsumed under the singular actor. The one body is evident without tension. Humanity does not seem to 'get' this. The tension between the head of a body and its many members continues today in our extreme individualistic society and in the extremes of corruption evident in social structures, both ours and others. Plus ça change.

This music can be compared with the music from yesterday's post on chapter 26. Interesting variations on a theme.

There may be no gloss atonement in Bob's Bible, but there is plenty of becoming one. It is disappointing that to atone has taken on a sense of guilt and obligation for sin rather than the joy expressed in the unity of creator and created by the construction of this body-like temple. I even heard the word used in a lecture last Wednesday by a gifted teacher, fortunately not central to his excellent lecture on the historical background to Jeremiah.

Verse 19, my mechanical rendition: And he made the covering for the tent from the skin of God dyed red! (A mistake in the stem אל for אלים. The stem should read איל ram or hart). But you know that this similarity of sound is intended in the Song of Songs to hide the name of God. See the chorus:

I have adjured you, daughters of Jerusalem, by the hosts of gazelle or by the hart of the field,

בְּאַיְל֣וֹת הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה sounds a little like אֵ֣ל שַׁדַּ֔י the One, the Sufficient, who appeared to Abraham. The Song is one of the keys to Torah.

I am really quite astonished that I preserved these intimate chapters for this last lap. I wonder what else remains.

Exodus 26

We continue the detailed plans for the dwelling-place for God. There is a tenderness expressed in these instructions for the desire of the human to enter into and hold fast to a complete relationship with the Mystery that all know if only from observing the beauty of the universe.

I cannot, of course, see into the mind of all, so you may take my statement as a statement of hope rather than direct knowledge. I would allow such hope to extend to all the creatures of the earth and sea, even if their bootstrap must begin with something as simple as self-protection. For one does protect self in order to exercise those gifts one is sgiven for the benefit of all, even if it is the gift of web-spinning in order to catch insects. And God aw all that he had constructed, (even the creepy-crawlies) and behold, it was very good.

The creation is of time and the timeless glory of each constructed part of the whole. The tabernacle and its careful pattern reflects this completed wholeness. It is a witness to a greater glory. It anticipates the glory that is to come in the temple. The New Testament makes the temple a type both of the one who was slain before the foundation of the world, and of the temple of the Spirit. (A comparison of this chapter with the next - tomorrow - will reveal just how much the two of them anticipate the incarnation. O my God, may we not weaponize such joy in ignorance.)

I did the first verses of this a long time ago and at the time I dutifully rendered אחות as sister, a curious gloss for a curtain. But see chapter 26 tomorrow for an explanation of my choice (always subject to revision). The music differs slightly from chapter to chapter. You will be able to put the music side by side (seven or so verses apart from each other to begin) to compare.

Exodus 38

This is familiar ground. I almost wonder if I had done it before. One word that had never been translated to date was vav, hook, one of the very few Hebrew words that begins with ו vav, itself a hook. I know I had reserved this gloss.

But where else are these words? They are in the specifications for the building in earlier chapters of Exodus. We had not yet read the chapters the hook first occurs in. This chapter itself is also highly repetitive with the mineral surface, brass, silver, often occurring on the last note of a phrase, e.g. verse 10 beginning at bar 76. Consider also the long recitation of verse 17, beginning in bar 128. Music would perform this with love. The temples and tabernacles are all a testimony to love, the joy of the one anticipating the presence of the other.

Exodus 5

Egypt gets its act together here. The predicament of the exploited is summarized under verse 16, and the sin is your people. If only we could find Pharaoh today to talk to him so plainly. But we know we are still early in the oncoming catastrophe for 'the world' (and be reminded it is that world that is loved by the Name (whose presence in a sentence is dangerous). (Maybe Pharaoh is available via twitter. Next stage is to make cars without parts.)

Verse 16 is unique in word order. I have never seen the words for saying in the middle of a statement of direct speech.

There is no straw given to your servants, and Bricks, they say to us, Make.
Exodus 5:16. The music is dramatic - and Bricks - descending a seventh.

The world's boss, Pharaoh, is not likely to be impressed by the outburst.

The other boss, the real one, has an equal problem with his chosen instrument. Serious questions arise in the conflict with the world. All is not well. It is not different with the family or the county or the state, or the world. Promises are in tension with realities. There may be escape but there will also be plague.  Who knows which side we are on?

וְאַחַ֗ר בָּ֚אוּ מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְאַהֲרֹ֔ן וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה כֹּֽה־אָמַ֤ר יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל שַׁלַּח֙ אֶת־עַמִּ֔י וְיָחֹ֥גּוּ לִ֖י בַּמִּדְבָּֽר	1		And after Moses and Aaron came, and they said to Pharaoh, Thus says Yahweh the God of Israel, Send out my people that they may make a festival to me in the wilderness.	3e	4C	17 24
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֔ה מִ֤י יְהוָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶשְׁמַ֣ע בְּקֹל֔וֹ לְשַׁלַּ֖ח אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לֹ֤א יָדַ֙עְתִּי֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֔ה וְגַ֥ם אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֹ֥א אֲשַׁלֵּֽחַ	2		And Pharaoh said, Who is Yahweh that I should hear with his voice to send Israel out? I do not know Yahweh, and Israel I will not send out.	3e	4C	22 18
וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ אֱלֹהֵ֥י הָעִבְרִ֖ים נִקְרָ֣א עָלֵ֑ינוּ נֵ֣לֲכָה נָּ֡א דֶּרֶךְ֩ שְׁלֹ֨שֶׁת יָמִ֜ים בַּמִּדְבָּ֗ר וְנִזְבְּחָה֙ לַֽיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ פֶּ֨ן־יִפְגָּעֵ֔נוּ בַּדֶּ֖בֶר א֥וֹ בֶחָֽרֶב	3		And they said, The God of the Hebrews has encountered us. Let us go please, a journey of three days into the wilderness that we may make an offering to Yahweh our God, lest he intervene with us by pestilence or by the sword.	3e	4B	14 36
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם לָ֚מָּה מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְאַהֲרֹ֔ן תַּפְרִ֥יעוּ אֶת־הָעָ֖ם מִמַּֽעֲשָׂ֑יו לְכ֖וּ לְסִבְלֹתֵיכֶֽם	4		And the king of Egypt said to them, Why, Moses and Aaron, do you make the people neglect their tasks? Go to your burdens.	3e	4C	28 7
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֔ה הֵן־רַבִּ֥ים עַתָּ֖ה עַ֣ם הָאָ֑רֶץ וְהִשְׁבַּתֶּ֥ם אֹתָ֖ם מִסִּבְלֹתָֽם	5		And Pharaoh said, Lo, many now are the people of the land, and you make them cease from their burdens.	3e	4B	14 10
וַיְצַ֥ו פַּרְעֹ֖ה בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא אֶת־הַנֹּגְשִׂ֣ים בָּעָ֔ם וְאֶת־שֹׁטְרָ֖יו לֵאמֹֽר	6		And Pharaoh commanded in that day, the taskmasters among the people and their overseers, saying,	3e	4B	8 12
לֹ֣א תֹאסִפ֞וּן לָתֵ֨ת תֶּ֧בֶן לָעָ֛ם לִלְבֹּ֥ן הַלְּבֵנִ֖ים כִּתְמ֣וֹל שִׁלְשֹׁ֑ם הֵ֚ם יֵֽלְכ֔וּ וְקֹשְׁשׁ֥וּ לָהֶ֖ם תֶּֽבֶן	7	B	You will no longer continue to give the people straw to brick the bricks as previously. Them, let them go and rake together straw for themselves.	3c	4C	19 10
וְאֶת־מַתְכֹּ֨נֶת הַלְּבֵנִ֜ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֵם֩ עֹשִׂ֨ים תְּמ֤וֹל שִׁלְשֹׁם֙ תָּשִׂ֣ימוּ עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם לֹ֥א תִגְרְע֖וּ מִמֶּ֑נּוּ כִּֽי־נִרְפִּ֣ים הֵ֔ם עַל־כֵּ֗ן הֵ֤ם צֹֽעֲקִים֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר נֵלְכָ֖ה נִזְבְּחָ֥ה לֵאלֹהֵֽינוּ	8		And the quantity of bricks that they made previously, you define it over them. You will not subtract from it, for they slacked off. Therefore they cry out, saying, Let us go to sacrifice to our God.	3e	4C	30 21
תִּכְבַּ֧ד הָעֲבֹדָ֛ה עַל־הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים וְיַעֲשׂוּ־בָ֑הּ וְאַל־יִשְׁע֖וּ בְּדִבְרֵי־שָֽׁקֶר	9		Let their servitude be heavy on the men and let them do it, and not look to false words.	3c	4A	16 8
וַיֵּ֨צְא֜וּ נֹגְשֵׂ֤י הָעָם֙ וְשֹׁ֣טְרָ֔יו וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֶל־הָעָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר פַּרְעֹ֔ה אֵינֶ֛נִּי נֹתֵ֥ן לָכֶ֖ם תֶּֽבֶן	10		And the taskmasters of the people went forth and their overseers, and they said to the people, saying, Thus says Pharaoh, It is not for me to give you straw.	3d	4C	18 14
אַתֶּ֗ם לְכ֨וּ קְח֤וּ לָכֶם֙ תֶּ֔בֶן מֵאֲשֶׁ֖ר תִּמְצָ֑אוּ כִּ֣י אֵ֥ין נִגְרָ֛ע מֵעֲבֹדַתְכֶ֖ם דָּבָֽר	11		You go, take for yourselves straw from what you find, but there is no subtracting from your designated service.	3d	4C	16 11
וַיָּ֥פֶץ הָעָ֖ם בְּכָל־אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם לְקֹשֵׁ֥שׁ קַ֖שׁ לַתֶּֽבֶן	12		And the people dispersed in all the land of Egypt, to rake together stubble as straw.	3e	4B	12 7
וְהַנֹּגְשִׂ֖ים אָצִ֣ים לֵאמֹ֑ר כַּלּ֤וּ מַעֲשֵׂיכֶם֙ דְּבַר־י֣וֹם בְּיוֹמ֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר בִּהְי֥וֹת הַתֶּֽבֶן	13		And the taskmasters importuned them, saying, Finish your designated tasks day by day, as when there was straw.	3e	4C	8 20
וַיֻּכּ֗וּ שֹֽׁטְרֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁר־שָׂ֣מוּ עֲלֵהֶ֔ם נֹגְשֵׂ֥י פַרְעֹ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר מַדּ֡וּעַ לֹא֩ כִלִּיתֶ֨ם חָקְכֶ֤ם לִלְבֹּן֙ כִּתְמ֣וֹל שִׁלְשֹׁ֔ם גַּם־תְּמ֖וֹל גַּם־הַיּֽוֹם	14		And the overseers of the children of Israel that the taskmasters of Pharaoh had set over them were struck, saying, Why not are you finished your decreed bricks as previously, even yesterday's, even today's?	3e	4C	23 21
וַיָּבֹ֗אוּ שֹֽׁטְרֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיִּצְעֲק֥וּ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר לָ֧מָּה תַעֲשֶׂ֦ה כֹ֖ה לַעֲבָדֶֽיךָ	15		And the overseers of the children of Israel came and they cried out to Pharaoh, saying, Why do you deal thus to your servants?	3c	4B	19 11
תֶּ֗בֶן אֵ֤ין נִתָּן֙ לַעֲבָדֶ֔יךָ וּלְבֵנִ֛ים אֹמְרִ֥ים לָ֖נוּ עֲשׂ֑וּ וְהִנֵּ֧ה עֲבָדֶ֛יךָ מֻכִּ֖ים וְחָטָ֥את עַמֶּֽךָ	16	~	There is no straw given to your servants, and Bricks, they say to us, Make. And behold your servants are struck, and the sin is your people.	3c	4C	19 15
וַיֹּ֛אמֶר נִרְפִּ֥ים אַתֶּ֖ם נִרְפִּ֑ים עַל־כֵּן֙ אַתֶּ֣ם אֹֽמְרִ֔ים נֵלְכָ֖ה נִזְבְּחָ֥ה לַֽיהוָֽה	17		But he said, Slacking off you are! Slacking off! Therefore you say, Let us go and sacrifice to Yahweh.	3d	4B	9 13
וְעַתָּה֙ לְכ֣וּ עִבְד֔וּ וְתֶ֖בֶן לֹא־יִנָּתֵ֣ן לָכֶ֑ם וְתֹ֥כֶן לְבֵנִ֖ים תִּתֵּֽנּוּ	18		And now, Go. Serve. And straw will not be given to you. And the quantity of bricks, you will put forth.	3e	4B	15 9
וַיִּרְא֞וּ שֹֽׁטְרֵ֧י בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֹתָ֖ם בְּרָ֣ע לֵאמֹ֑ר לֹא־תִגְרְע֥וּ מִלִּבְנֵיכֶ֖ם דְּבַר־י֥וֹם בְּיוֹמֽוֹ	19		And the overseers of the children of Israel saw they were into evil, with the saying, You will not subtract from your designated bricks day by day.	3c	4B	16 14
וַֽיִּפְגְּעוּ֙ אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְאֶֽת־אַהֲרֹ֔ן נִצָּבִ֖ים לִקְרָאתָ֑ם בְּצֵאתָ֖ם מֵאֵ֥ת פַּרְעֹֽה	20		And they came across Moses and Aaron standing firm to encounter them, at their going out from Pharaoh.	3e	4B	18 7
וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם יֵ֧רֶא יְהוָ֛ה עֲלֵיכֶ֖ם וְיִשְׁפֹּ֑ט אֲשֶׁ֧ר הִבְאַשְׁתֶּ֣ם אֶת־רֵיחֵ֗נוּ בְּעֵינֵ֤י פַרְעֹה֙ וּבְעֵינֵ֣י עֲבָדָ֔יו לָֽתֶת־חֶ֥רֶב בְּיָדָ֖ם לְהָרְגֵֽנוּ	21		And they said to them, Yahweh see to you and be judge, that you have made our fragrance stink in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants, to give a sword in their hands to slay us.	3c	4C	16 31
וַיָּ֧שָׁב מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר אֲדֹנָ֗י לָמָ֤ה הֲרֵעֹ֙תָה֙ לָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה לָ֥מָּה זֶּ֖ה שְׁלַחְתָּֽנִי	22		And Moses returned to Yahweh, and he said, My Lord, why have you done evil for this people? Why is it that you sent me?	3c	4C	11 20
וּמֵאָ֞ז בָּ֤אתִי אֶל־פַּרְעֹה֙ לְדַבֵּ֣ר בִּשְׁמֶ֔ךָ הֵרַ֖ע לָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֑ה וְהַצֵּ֥ל לֹא־הִצַּ֖לְתָּ אֶת־עַמֶּֽךָ	23		Ever since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and deliverance! You have not delivered your people.	3e	4C	20 10
