The Torah in Music according to the Haïk-Vantoura deciphering key

No section of Scripture is sung more often than these five books. Yet few would sing them in this form. I have gone on with this deciphering key since 2010 when I first heard of it at the Oxford Conference on the Psalms. The tone of voice is restored with these melodies and the leitmotifs and connections of Scripture  with Scripture are rediscovered.

Genesis is here (brawit, as noted earlier this month).

And here is Exodus (wmot), Leviticus (viqra), Numbers (bmdbr), and Deuteronomy (dbrim).

I am convinced that the music will bear much study.

The birth and formation of a people

The following article plays on the words נשא and נסע in the formation of Israel as a people in the book of Numbers.

https://www.thetorah.com/article/israels-development-as-a-nation-form-storm-norm-perform.

It has struck me that the purpose of the Bible is the formation and birth of a people who are what I termed 'under the mercy' of God. This is one of my glosses for חסידים, ksidim, a word (incidentally with a synonym signifying the stork) derived from חסד, a word perhaps best illustrated with the story of Ruth the Moabite.

חסיד is most often used in David's Torah, the 5 fold Psalter, called תהילים, thilim, or praises, where I began my studies 15 years ago. The Psalms are definitely a book that is designed to form community, to build a people who are merciful, compassionate, and reflecting this character of God. The key verse for the character of i-h-v-h, God is Exodus 34:6. Allusions to this verse are found in many verses of the Psalms.

Pentecost has been called the birth of the church. Rather than looking on this event as a discontinuity in the story of God, we can see its patterns already in the First Testament. Two patterns in the formation of a people, first in Numbers and also reflecting the mercy and compassion of the God who formed them. (The bold indicates that the verse is from an acrostic. The letter is forced on the translator.)

Numbers 24

On whom was the spirit?

Baalam and Balak, those two are superstitious, seeking sorcery, augury, and magic. This is not my view of reality or of God. I am convinced that if we wish to be taught by God, we must not begin by knowing all the answers we think God should be providing us. God provides us with difficult questions. We must find these and learn how great God's love really is and at what cost we are called into it.

My furious frustration is, that having done all this, I am still only at the beginning of the questions.

Numbers 24 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And Balaam saw that it was good in the eyes of Yahweh to bless Israel, and he did not go as he had, time after time, to encounter augury,
but set his face to the wilderness.

2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel dwelling by its sceptres,
and on him was the spirit of God.

Numbers 23

There's more to cagey chance in this encounter than I remembered. It seems a bit presumptuous to add Yahweh (verse 15) to the text when the word is not there.

Note that the bull and ram 'on the altar' perhaps imply one each per altar, but the text doesn't read that way. All sorts of interpretive moves are made by a translator. Far more than can be comfortably documented. We readers must become aware that this is the case so that we understand that we also are reading and doing interpretation. There's no avoiding the responsibility.

V 18, one would expect child of Zippor, but again it is not the pattern. V 19, sigh, נחם comfort used of Yahweh traditionally for God repenting. Since I never use that word anyway and since God has no need of repentance in the traditional sense, I use sigh.

נחם comfort (76) sigh (30) regret (7) consolation (4) show pity (2) Naxam (1) console (1) re-create (1) showed pity (1)

The One = God אל. I am not consistent with this. Sometimes the phrasing is too awkward for the One. Perhaps El might have been a good choice for the short form of Elohim, but I only use El in names like Bethel. (At present).

This chapter being a cliff-hanger, chapter 24 will follow shortly.

23 C For no augury against Jacob, and no soothsaying against Israel.
At such a time, it will be said of Jacob and of Israel, How does God work?
3e 4C 14

Even do not bless him.
3e 4C 15

3e 4C 20
18

12

30 And Balak did as Balaam had said,
and offered up a young bull and a ram on the altar.

Numbers 22

I don't speak Biblical Hebrew. So I report what I read. The donkey said. This is three feet. Not three times! Why it said feet I don't know. I don't speak donkey either. (And it wasn't an ass.) Incidentally, the angel/messenger, speaks donkey.

Numbers 22 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And the children of Israel pulled out,
and encamped in the steppes of Moab from beyond the Jordan by Jericho.
3e 4B 8
18
2 And Balak child of Zippor saw,
all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
3d 4A 7
13
3 And Moab was very much terrified in the presence of the people, for many, it was.
And Moab bristled in the presence of the children of Israel.
3d 4B 14
12
4 And Moab said to the elders of Midian, Now the congregation will lick all surrounding us, as the bull licks the foliage of the field.
And Balak child of Zippor was king for Moab at that time.
3c 4C 36
15
5 And he sent messengers to Balaam, child of Beor, to Petor that is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him,
saying, Behold, a people came out from Egypt. Behold, it covers the eye of the land, and it sits at my cutting edge.
3c 4C 28
26
6 So now, go on, please. Curse for me this people, for it is too numerous for me. Perhaps I will overpower, strike it, and expel it from the land,
because I know whom you bless is blessed, and whom you curse is cursed.
3e 4C 36
20
7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian went, and the soothsayers in their hand,
and they came to Balaam, and they spoke to him the words of Balak.
3e 4C 18
15
8 And he said to them, Lodge here tonight, and I will bring you back a word, as Yahweh speaks to me.
So the nobles of Moab settled with Balaam.
3d 4C 31
9
9 But God came to Balaam,
and he said, What persons are these with you?
3d 4A 9
13
10 And Balaam said to this God,
Balak child of Zippor, the king of Moab, He sent to me.
3c 4A 10
13
11 Behold the people who came forth from Egypt, and it covered the eye of the land.
Now, go on, hex it for me. Perhaps I will be able to fight it and expel it.
3d 4C 17
22
12 And God said to Balaam, Do not go with them.
You not will curse the people, for blessed it is.
3e 4C 15
10
13 And Balaam arose in the morning, and he said to the nobility of Balak, Go to your land,
for Yahweh will not permit me to go with you.
3e 4C 22
14
14 And the nobles of Moab arose and they came to Balak,
and said, Balaam will not go with us.
3e 4B 14
12
15 And again further, Balak,
sent many nobles, and more glorious than these.
3e 4B 6
14
16 And they came to Balaam,
and said to him, Thus says Balak child of Zippor, Do not, please, withhold coming to me.
3e 4C 6
22
17 For with glory I will glorify you very much, and all that you say to me I will do.
So come now, please. Hex for me this people.
3d 4C 19
11
18 And Balaam answered and he said to the servants of Balak, If Balak will give me his house filled with silver and gold,
I could not pass through the mandate of Yahweh my God to do lesser or greater.
3d 4B 28
23
19 So now settle please here, even you, tonight,
and I will know what Yahweh will again speak with me.
3d 4B 14
12
20 But God came to Balaam at night, saying to him, If the persons come to call to you, arise, go with them.
And surely the word that I will speak to you, it, you will do.
3d 4C 30
19
21 And Balaam arose in the morning, and he saddled his donkey,
and went with the nobles of Moab.
3e 4C 16
8
22 And the anger of God burned that he went and the messenger of Yahweh presented himself on the way as his accuser.
And he was riding upon his donkey, and his two lads with him.
3c 4B 25
15
23 And the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh taking a stand in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand, and the donkey bent from the way, and she went into the field.
And Balaam struck the donkey to bend her into the way.
3e 4C 40
15
24 But the messenger of Yahweh stood in the narrow passage of the vineyards,
a fence from this and a fence from that.
3e 4B 14
9
25 And the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, and she kept her grip to the house wall, and gripped the foot of Balaam to the house wall,
and again he struck her.
3d 4B 29
7
26 And again the messenger of Yahweh passed through.
And he stood in a strait place where there was no way to bend right or left.
3d 4B 9
20
27 And the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, and she reclined under Balaam.
And the anger of Balaam burned and he struck the donkey with a stick.
3e 4C 18
15
28 And Yahweh opened the mouth of the donkey,
and she said to Balaam, What have I done to you that you strike me? This is three feet.
3e 4C 10
23
29 And Balaam said to the donkey, Because you have shackled me.
Suppose there were a sword in my hand, for now I would slay you.
3e 4C 14
13
30 And said the donkey to Balaam, Am I not your donkey and you have ridden on me since I was yours until this day? Is it custom, my custom, to do to you thus?
And he said, No.
3e 4B 44
4
31 And Yahweh disclosed himself to the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of Yahweh taking a stand in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand,
and he bowed his head and he prostrated himself to his nose.
3e 4C 30
10
32 And to him the messenger of Yahweh said, For what did you strike your donkey? This is three feet.
Behold I myself went out as accuser, for to surrender is the way in my presence.
3e 4C 24
19

33 And me the donkey saw and bent in my presence. This is three feet.
Perhaps she bent in my presence. But now even you I would have slain, and her I would have let live.
3d 4B 18
23

34 And Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, I have sinned, for I did not know that you were taking a stand to encounter me in the way.
So now, if it is evil in your eyes, I will return for myself.
3d 4C 29
13
35 And the messenger of Yahweh said to Balaam, Go with the persons. But finally, the word that I will speak to you, it you will speak.
And Balaam went with the nobility of Balak.
3d 4C 36
10
36 And Balak heard that Balaam had come,
so he went out to encounter him to a city of Moab that is by the border of Arnon, that is toward the end of the border.
3e 4B 9
23

37 And Balak said to Balaam, Did I not send to you to call to you? Why did you not come to me?
Truly, am I not able to glorify you?
3e 4C 29
9

38 And said Balaam to Balak, Behold, I come to you now. Am I able, able to endure to speak anything whatever?
The word that God sets in my mouth, it will I speak.
3c 4B 27
17
39 And Balaam went with Balak,
and they entered the town of streets.
3e 4A 8
7
40 And Balak offered oxen and sheep,
and he sent to Balaam and to the nobles that were with him.
3e 4B 9
14
41 And it happened in the morning, and Balak took Balaam and brought him up the high places of Baal.
And he saw from there the extremity of the people.

Numbers 33

A sensible analysis of one set of words that may be two sets is needed - related to the destruction of the מַשְׂכִּיֹּתָ֑ם in verse 52. It is an odd word with an unknown stem. I have assigned it to שכה for the moment. The instances of this piece will take me through several verses in several genres. I think I will end up with some separation.

It's a long chapter, but one where an itinerary is a good lesson in Hebrew. The word by word is below the chapter in sentence form. Personally, I think if someone had shown me this sort of thing a bit at a time when I was new to Hebrew, it would have helped the initial learning curve. I have developed it now as one form of revealing my choices whether good or bad. Hebrew word order is sometimes quite acceptable in English. The word by word illustrates this frequently. On the other hand, people decry interlinears for good reason. In English word order, they are quite misleading.
