Ezekiel 24

Verse 2, סמך is usually used as a positive support. E.g. the passages in Leviticus where the one bringing the sacrifice supports his hand on the head of the animal. Or the appeals and statements in the Psalms e.g. 3:6 that God has supported me.  Here in Ezekiel there there is irony in the usage, as if the siege engines are supporting the walls of Jerusalem. Indeed they were, but destruction, though not ultimate, was their first intent.

I put some weight on תמם complete. I have no synonyms for it. For me it is the end of the sacrificial system, the completing of the sacrifice representing the perfecting of the one who offers. I did not use perfect as a gloss except in Ezra 7:12 in that foreign Aramaic tongue, and then it is only part of the gloss, perfect peace. And remember, the foreign king is both superstitious and bombastic in his language.

I note that you, as we all know, is no longer distinguishable as singular or plural in English. We have abandoned the thee and the thou. This is not all bad. While sometimes in my English, among you is from the singular בך and sometimes from the plural בכם, even in Hebrew, the singular pronoun sometimes reflects the corporate singular people so an among is not out of place. The singular is not necessarily the individual.

All I wanted to do was actually read this text as Jesus might have read it or even sung it. Though in his day the form of the text would have been different. Who knows what scrolls the Nazarene had access to? When I heard, "You cannot know my mind without reading the extended dialogue between father and son in the Hebrew", how was I to fail to read? I am not quite finished.

Verse 17, wrap up a lip. JB has cover your beard. A mourning ritual? I couldn't read it this way because it would break my concordance rules. There's no כסה cover, or your, or beard זקן in the sentence. It doesn't say cover your beard, but it might mean that. NIV has cover the lower part of your face. Maybe a footnote would be useful. What it says is wrap up a lip. Maybe this stopped people from talking too much when there was a tragedy.

Ezekiel 24 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And the word of Yahweh happened to me in the ninth year, in the tenth new moon, on the tenth of the month, saying, 3e 4C 29
2 Child of humanity, write for yourself the name of the day, even this selfsame day.
The king of Babel placed supports at Jerusalem this selfsame day.
3e 4C 18
3 And parable to the house of provocation, a parable. And you say to them, Thus says my Lord Yahweh,
Ordain a pot on a hearth-stone, and even infuse into it water.
3e 4C 24
4 Gather pieces into it, every good piece, thigh and shoulder.
With choice bones, fill.
3e 4C 18
5 The chosen of the flock, take, and also the pyre of bones under it.
Churn, churn it, even boil her bones in her midst.
3d 4C 17
6 Therefore thus says my Lord Yahweh, Woe to the city of blood, a pot that has its disease in it, but its disease did not come forth from it.
Piece by piece, bring it out. Let not the lot fall on it.
3e 4C 34
7 C For her blood is in her midst. On a glowing cliff she set it in place.
She did not pour it out on the earth to cover it with dust.
3e 4C 17
8 To make poison come up, to take vengeance, I positioned her blood on a glowing cliff,
that it should not be covered.
3e 4C 22
9 Therefore thus says my Lord Yahweh, Woe to the city of blood.
Even I myself will magnify the pyre.
3e 4C 16
10 Increase the wood. Inflame the fire. Complete the flesh,
and compound its perfume, and let the bones be scorched.
3e 4C 14
11 And let it stand over the coals empty,
so that it may be heated, and its brass may burn, and its uncleanness be poured forth in its midst, completing its disease.
3e 4C 13
12 She is exasperated with mischief,
and her excessive disease has not gone forth from her. In the fire will be her disease.
3e 4C 5
13 In your uncleanness is an agenda.
Because I have cleansed you, but you were not cleansed, in your uncleanness you will not be cleansed any more, until I make rest my heat among you.
3e 4C 6
14 I am Yahweh. I have spoken. It will come, and I will act. I will not neglect, nor will I spare, nor will I show pity.
According to your ways and according to your practices you will be judged, an oracle of my Lord Yahweh.
3e 4C 24
15 And the word of Yahweh happened to me, saying, 3e 3g 10
16 Child of humanity, behold me taking from you the covetousness of your eyes with a plague,
but you will not wail nor will you weep, and your tears will not come.
3c 4C 20
17 To groan be mute. For the dead you will make no lament. Your adornment bind upon you, and your sandals you will put on your feet.
And you will not wrap up a lip. And the bread of men you will not eat.
3e 4C 29
18 And I spoke to the people in the morning, and my wife died in the evening.
And I did in the morning as I was commanded.
3e 4C 18
19 And the people said to me,
Will you not make clear to us what these are to us because you act?
3e 4B 7
20 Then I said to them,
The word of Yahweh happened to me, saying,
3e 4A 6
21 Say to the house of Israel, Thus says my Lord Yahweh, Behold me profaning my sanctuary, the pride of your strength, the covetousness of your eyes, and what your selves pity.
And your sons and your daughters that you have forsaken, by the sword will fall.
3c 4C 39
22 And you will act as I have acted.
A lip you will not wrap up, and the bread of men you will not eat.
3e 4B 10
23 And your adornment on your heads, and your shoes on your feet, you will not wail and you will not weep,
but you will rot in your iniquities, and growl each to its kin.
3e 4B 25
24 And Ezekiel will be for you a portent. According to all that he has done, you will do.
When it comes, then you will know that I am the Lord Yahweh.
3e 4C 21
25 And you child of humanity, will it not be in the day I take from them their strength, the joy of their adornment,
the covetousness of their eyes, and the load of their integrity, their sons and their daughters?
3e 4C 23
26 In that day, one secured will come to you
to give you ears to hear.
3e 4B 12
27 In that day, your mouth will be opened with one secured, and you will speak, and be dumb no more,
and you will be for them a portent, and they will know that I am Yahweh.
