1 Kings 20

The compact form of the proverb of verse 11 in Hebrew cannot be imitated in English.

Where was Aram put under the ban? Nowhere. There is no chapter in the Bible where the word חרם is used with respect to Aram (Syria).

Ahab has acted in his own interests, and he was taken in by a repentance of convenience. On verse 42, NIV explain that their translation that Benhadad must die is interpreting a word that indicates such an action. But the word for die is not in the text. Perhaps the prophet thinks that Benhadad should be devoted to Yahweh (which he clearly is not). Ahab is taken in his own compromise.

Note that here we learn that to strike נכה (trad. smite) is not necessarily to kill.

And if to battle they have come forth, alive, arrest them.
3c 4B 14

20 And they struck each his man, and Aram withdrew and Israel pursued them.
And Benhadad king of Aram escaped upon a horse, with cavaliers.
3e 4B 19
17

21 And the king of Israel went forth and struck the horse and the chariot,
and struck Aram a great striking.
3e 4B 18
11

For at the turn of the year, the king of Aram will come up against you.
3e 4C 30
16
23 And the servants of the king of Aram said to him, Gods of the hills are their gods, so they were more resolute than we were.
However, let us fight them in a level place, without fail, we will be more resolute than they.
3e 4C 27
18
24 And this thing do.
Put aside the kings, each from his own place, and set viceroys in their stead.
3e 4C 9
16

25 And you appoint for yourself a force like the force that has fallen from you, both horse for horse, and chariot for chariot, and we will fight them in a level place. Without fail, we will be more resolute than they.
And he heard their voice, and he did so.
3e 4C 45
10

26 And it happened at the turn of the year, and Benhadad conscripted Aram.
And he went up to Aphaq to battle the people of Israel.
3e 4B 17
14

27 And the children of Israel were conscripted, and they were nourished, and they went to encounter them.
And the children of Israel encamped in front of them like two strips of she-goats. And Aram, they filled the land.
3e 4B 18
27

28 And the man of God made overture, and he said to the king of Israel, and he said, Thus says Yahweh, Because Aram says Yahweh is a God of the hills and he is not a God of the valleys,
so I will give all this great tumult into your hand, and you will know that I am Yahweh.
3e 4C 48
25

29 And they encamped, these opposite these, seven days.
And it was on the seventh day and the battle was cheek by jowl, and the children of Israel struck Aram, a hundred thousand on foot in one day.

35
30 And the remaining withdrew to Aphaq against the city, and the wall fell on twenty seven thousand men that remained.
And Benhadad withdrew, and he came to the city into an inner room.
