Nehemiah 13

This chapter includes some time-sensitive policy. Racial purity, patriarchy, and other biases are not the formative message of the canonical history. The consequences are frightening to those who cannot abide difference.

It should be noted that King David is excluded from the congregation of God because of his Moabite descent. The Torah is holy. Don't get me wrong here. But it is not to be slavishly followed. It is a record of a real history of choices, some good, some bad, some leading to the real value of self-giving and care for the disadvantaged, and some leading to false values if the so-called believer thinks they have control over it. No one has such control. We do not love Torah for any self-serving reason. Nehemiah had to enforce the requirements of Torah in this phase of the rebuilding for reasons he could not have known. The necessary framework had to be preserved for the one who was to come out of Israel. The framework was being abused and we have to hear a record of some of the necessary correction for this time period.

Now about this language - Hebrew is a relief after a chapter of Aramaic. (I have also noticed an improvement in my Greek reading - but my vocab is very limited. Astonishing what the brain does by itself. Astonishing what I forget too.)

Verse 2 reminds me that we have not yet done Balaam. Soon - there are not many chapters left (55 left to post by the time this appears).

There may be another offering type here, the oblation of the wood, verse 31. By my search, this pairing of words and their stems קרב עץ is unique.

1 In that day they recited in the record of Moses in the ears of the people,
and it was found inscribed in it, that an Ammonite or a Moabite should not come into the congregation of God evermore.

2 B For he did not come to the children of Israel with bread and water,
but contracted Balaam against him to deny him, and our God changed the denial to blessing.
3c 4C 17
25
3 And it happened as they were hearing the instruction,
that they differentiated all the intermingled from Israel.
3e 4B 9
11
4 And before this, Elyashib the priest, assigned in the chamber of the house of our God,
was near Tobiah.
3e 4B 21
6
5 And he made for himself a great chamber where before they would have consigned the gift, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the clarified oil, as commanded for the Levites and the singers and the gatekeepers,
and the contribution for the priests.

6 And in all this, I had not been in Jerusalem,
for in the thirty second year of Artaxerxes, king of Babel, I came to the king, and after some days, I asked leave from the king.
3e 4C 11
34
7 So I came to Jerusalem.
And I understood the evil that Elyashib had undertaken for Tobiah to make for himself a chamber in the courts of the house of God.
3e 4C 7
32
8 And it irritated me much.
And I cast out all the vessels of the house of Tobiah outside of the chamber.
3c 4A 6
18
9 And I said that they should clean the chambers.
And I restored there the vessels of the house of God, the gift, and the frankincense.
3e 4B 10
20
10 And I knew that the portions of the Levites had not been given.
And to their field they had been made to run, each of the Levites and the singers who did the lines of work.
3c 4B 14
21
11 And I contended with the prefects, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken?
And I collected them and installed them per their standing.
3e 4B 22
12
12 And all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, and the new wine, and the clarified oil, to the treasuries. 3c 3g 25
13 And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the secretary, and Pedayah from the Levites, and by their hand, Chanan, child of Zakkur, child of Mattaniah,
for they were reckoned faithful, and it was to them to divide for their kin.
3e 4C 39

14 Remember me, my God, over this.
And let not my kindness be wiped out that I have done in the house of my God and for its guardians.

15 In those days I saw in Judah treading vats on the Sabbath, and bringing in the piles, and laying a load on asses, and also wine, grapes, and figs, and all loads, and entering Jerusalem on the day of the Sabbath.
And I testified by day for their selling of provender.
3d 4C 59
9
16 And Tyrians settled there who brought fish and all that is sold.
And they sold on the Sabbath to the children of Judah and in Jerusalem.
3c 4B 16
16
17 And I contended with the freeborn of Judah,
and said to them, What evil thing is this that you are doing, that you profane the day of the Sabbath?
3e 4C 10
27
18 Did not thus your ancestors, and our God brought against us all this evil and over this city?
And would you add burning anger over Israel by profaning the Sabbath?
3e 4C 32
19

19 And it happened that as the gates of Jerusalem were shadowed before the Sabbath, that I said that the gateways should be locked. And I said that they should not open until after the Sabbath.
And some of my lads I had installed over the gates. No load is to enter on the day of the Sabbath.
3e 4B 45
21
20 And the merchants hung around, and sellers of all that is sold, outside of Jerusalem one or two times. 3c 3g 24
21 And I testified against them and said to them, Why are you hanging around in front of the wall? If you do a second time, my hand I will extend against you.
From that time, they did not come on the Sabbath.
3e 4C 32
10
22 And I said to the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and come and keep the gates, to sanctify the day of the Sabbath.
Even this. Remember me, my God, and spare me in the multitude of your mercies.
3e 4C 30
18
23 B Moreover in those days I saw the Judeans who settled with women, Ashdodite, Ammonite, Moabite... 3e 4C 30
24 And their children spoke half Ashdodite, and they could not recognize a Judean word,
but according to the tongue of each people.
3e 4B 23
6
25 And I contended with them, and slighted them, and struck some persons from them, and pared them.
And I had them swear in God, You will not give your daughters to their sons, and you will not take from their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.
3d 4C 21
31
26 By these things, did not Solomon king of Israel sin? Yet among the many nations, there was not a king like him, and he was loved of his God, and God assigned him king over all Israel.
Even him the foreign women made to sin.
3e 4C 51
14
27 And to you should we pay heed to do all this great evil, to trespass in our God,
to settle with foreign women?
3e 4C 25
8
28 And one from the children of Yoiada, child of Elyashib the great priest was son-in-law of Sanballet the Horonite,
so I made him run from me.
3e 4C 26
8
29 Remember them, my God,
concerning the sullying of the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.
3e 4C 7
16
30 So I cleansed them from all foreigners.
And I installed guardians of the priests and of the Levites, each in his trade.
3c 4A 8
21
31 And for the oblation of the wood, in the times of the seasons, and for the first ripe fruit,
remember me, my God, for the good.
