2 Kings 9

Gird your loins is such a classic phrase from the 16th century. But I have already used gird, girdle, etc for אזר and the stem in this chapter is חגר. I think I would have noticed if it wasn't working. (Sometimes attire is a bit odd to say. Sounds too much like a motorcar)

אזר girdle (15) gird (13) girt (2) gird up (1) self-gird (1)
חגר attire (21) wear (16) sash (5) wore (3)

Anyway - gird up your loins - which has metaphoric applications, seems to be simply, get dressed. Was that one among the children of the prophets in his pajamas? It seems the lad was well prepared for his task and carried it out. The prophet seems to have an administrative structure around him, a curia, a municipality in the kingdom, with political power.

It is the nature of this (my) reading of the Hebrew that I keep the stems separate that I can separate, especially the ones that are rarely used. I have compromised my concordance at times for various reasons: a few times for language games, English or Hebrew, and with some very common words, come, go, enter, bring, I have been as flexible as required to make the English readable. But for rare words, like the strong bone of the stairs (verse 13), I leave the stark awkward metaphor in Hebrew for the English reader to figure out. My rules are roughly these (note the single and double less than and greater than signs):
  • One Hebrew stem <-> one English stem, wherever possible
  • One Hebrew stem <->> many English stems, where required for readability and nuance
  • Many Hebrew stems <<-> one English stem, never (except for grammatical connectors, prepositions, conjunctions, etc where usage is varied)
  • Many Hebrew stems <<->> many English stems, for very common words such as noted above.
All the exceptions are in a database by Hebrew and English stem so I am reasonably certain I have not failed abysmally in applying my rules.

I have not come across a reading of the Hebrew that uses these rigid rules. As I have frequently pointed out, the KJV is free with many to many relationships in significant nouns and verbs. They use punish for instance for a half-dozen unrelated stems. Similarly for many other glosses. There is no need for this. If we are afraid of God visiting us (פקד), then we are afraid. We should be glad of another death. Such a visitation is always ultimately for life.

Another note. I try to make my reading as transparent as possible. I suppose I am lucky to have limited focus, because this is a large puzzle. But being transparent, if I am wrong, I hope I am clearly wrong, and that such an error raises good questions as to how languages actually work. Language of course has been made to work in oppressive and manipulative ways. I hope this is not my result. I would rather undermine such a result.

In verse 15 we see the use of נפשׁ (again) as mind in KJV and in JB and NIV "if this is how you feel." This just shows the many imaginative ways in which that elusive word is rendered. I am very surprised to see NIV = JB.

The horror is personalized here. There wasn't much left to attire in a tomb. There are some spelling issues with the names Joram, Jehoram. They seem to be the same person in this chapter.

15 And Jehoram the king returned to be healed in Jezreel from the defeats that the Aramaeans struck when they fought with Hazael king of Aram.)
And Jehu said, If this is your integrity, do not let anyone securely go forth from the city to walk out to make it clear in Jezreel.
3e 4C 43

17 And the lookout stood on the tower in Jezreel, and he saw a profusion of Jehu as he came. And he said, A profusion I myself see.
And Jehoram said, Take a rider, and send to encounter them, and let him say, Is it peace?
3d 4C 33

18 And a rider went on the horse to encounter him, and he said, Thus says the king, Is it peace? And Jehu said, What is it to you? And for peace, turn around behind me.
And the lookout announced, saying, The messenger came up to them, and he does not return.
3c 4C 38

19 And he sent a second rider on a horse, and he came to them and he said, Thus says the king, Peace.
And Jehu said, What is it to you? And for peace, turn around behind me.
3c 4B 25

20 And the lookout announced, saying, He came even to them, and he did not return.
And the driving is like the driving of Jehu child of Nimshi, for with craziness he drives.
3e 4C 16

21 And Jehoram said, Hitch the straps, and straps were hitched of his chariot.
And Jehoram king of Israel went out, and Achaziah king of Judah, each in his chariot, and they went forth to encounter Jehu and found him in a part of Naboth the Jezreelite.
3e 4C 13

22 And it happened that when Jehoram saw Jehu, that he said, Is it peace, Jehu?
And he said, What peace while the harlotries of Jezebel your mother and her sorceries are many?
3c 4C 18
23 And Jehoram turned his hands and withdrew.
And he said to Achaziah, Deceit, Ahaziah.
3c 4A 12
24 And Jehu filled his hand with the bow, and struck Jehoram between his arms, and the arrow went out from his heart,
and he bowed down in his chariot.
3c 4C 29

25 And he said to Bdeqar, his equerry, Lift up and cast him in the part of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite,
for remember, I and you rode as a pair behind Ahab his father, and Yahweh loaded on him this load.
3e 4C 26

26 Without fail, the blood of Naboth and the blood of his children I have seen last night, an oracle of Yahweh. And I will repay you in this division, an oracle of Yahweh.
So now bear and cast him in the division according to the word of Yahweh.
3c 4C 37

27 And Ahaziah king of Judah saw, and withdrew by the way of the garden house.
But Jehu pursued behind him, and he said, Also him. Strike him by the chariot in the ascent of terror, that is by Yiblam. And he withdrew to Megiddo, and died there.
3e 4C 19

28 And his servants made him ride toward Jerusalem.
And they entombed him in his tomb with his ancestors in the city of David.

30 And Jehu came to Jezreel, and Jezebel heard of it.
And she put antimony on her eyes, and made the best of her head, and looked down through the window.
3e 4C 9

36 And they returned and they told him, and he said, The word of Yahweh it is that he spoke by the hand of his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying,

3d 4B 34
