Judges 8

Singular and plural concord is not always evident in the Hebrew sentences. When is the one many or the many one? Some of these may be the style of the writer. That would take a breakdown of the data that I have not yet managed in such detail. Not to worry, he, it, them, are really unimportant in the one body that we are.

Violence comes out of gang warfare. There is no difference between Gideon commanding his son to kill, and an modern day terrorist, illegitimate in our eyes, or a legitimate state training youth soldiers. As Jesus said to the sons of thunder, You do not know what spirit you are of. If we are indeed of the spirit of Jesus, we should not be teaching our children such violence. - But he was just paying them back. - Indeed he was. - But he was just defending himself and his family. - Indeed he was.

And they were Ishmaelites, Gideon's own kin anyway, whose ancestors had saved Joseph, thus making Gideon's life possible. Near flesh and blood or distant flesh and blood, we are one and we are still at each others throats and still covetous even in our religions.

This record of the anti-monarchist is stained with blood and violence. And his covetousness and his religion became a trap for him. But he did have peace in his time in spite of having 70 children. I hope we don't consider this a good example of Biblical marriage.

But the children of Israel were not kind or faithful either. I suppose that none of our historical leaders were perfect paragons, but perhaps they should be remembered for what they did as well as their mistakes and deficiencies. (Scrap the statues though.)

Ungrateful, forgetful, superstitious people that we are, are we willing to trade 40 years of convenience for the future of our children?

Judges 8 Fn Min Max Syll

33 And it happened when Gideon died, that the children of Israel turned and prostituted themselves after the Baalim.
And they set up for themselves Baal, a covenant for God.
3c 4B 26
13
וְלֹ֤א זָֽכְרוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם
