Nehemiah 3

Reading this chapter, I can imagine walking the wall of Old Jerusalem from top to bottom and back to the top.  It would have been fun to know more of this chapter in 2010 when we were there for 3 weeks. But you can't do everything at once. And early zeal has its dangers.

Verse 34 has three words that JB leaves out, הֲיַעַזְב֨וּ לָהֶ֤ם הֲיִזְבָּ֙חוּ֙ (footnote Three Hebrew words difficult to explain in this context: Will they leave them alone? Will they sacrifice?. NIV makes something up. Will they restore their wall? I am questioning whether עזב can have a secondary sense that appears to be opposite to forsake. I have used a secondary sense and even a tertiary sense in several places, e.g. Exodus 23:5. Possibly this could date some fragments of the text. (A task both outside of my mandate and beyond my pay scale.)

חזק, I have used revamp several times (already used repair elsewhere), but revamp is just what I am doing, a 'second measure' (6 times in this chapter) of wall-building. Bob! You are building a wall! Yes - a transparent wall for my day, a permeable membrane. Not excluding, but definitely undermining prior walls whether the Catholic wall (JB - as fine a translation as I can imagine though still assuming an undefinable unity of intent) or the fundamentalist wall (NIV international is a code word for conservative) or even the scholarly wall (on which I depend, but most people don't read them) or the political and artistic historical wall (KJV - yes it was political at the time, divine right of kings, male supremacy, slave owning, parochial, puritanical, punishing, 'Christian').

Are you against Christ (Jesus)? By no means. God forbid I should fail to pursue what has been given me as mandate. (That was a divine passive.) I pursue this after my 12 year study of the NT following decades of ignorant 'belief'. I have said elsewhere that I have heard and known mystery, things I cannot speak of, but these things, they say: learn properly, undo your ignorance of history, follow the evidence, teach 'my children' around the world, learn from waves of Christendom breaking on the horror of the Shoa and the shame of the abuse of the innocent and the exploitation of the impoverished.

Verse 5 has an element of sarcasm. Some people don't want to get their hands dirty.

וַיְהִ֧י לֵ֦ב לָעָ֖ם לַעֲשֽׂוֹת
38 So we built up the wall, and all the wall was sturdy to its half,
for it was heartfelt for the people to act.
