Jeremiah 5

Jeremiah laments that even the great are corrupted. They say - no evil will come upon us (verse 12). The sky is not falling. We restored the ozone layer. So there are a few fires and storms, but the sea level is not our problem and global warming, if there is any, is out of our control.

The prophecy here is very germane to us. When we believe lies, we cannot hear the truth no matter what we thought we believed. If one lives one whole life with a falsehood, how difficult it is to return to the one who is truth.

Parts of this are difficult. I am running too fast to think. Must slow down. My rants are commented out. But I fear that neither our political leaders nor our religious leaders can read these things and apply them correctly to today. There is actually quite a bit of practical advice here for the modern world. And the post-modern. Must figure out how to really translate this... What we have so far is a reading for the music. Much to learn...

יְהֹוָ֗ה עֵינֶיךָ֮ הֲל֣וֹא לֶאֱמוּנָה֒ הִכִּ֤יתָה אֹתָם֙ וְֽלֹא־חָ֔לוּ כִּלִּיתָ֕ם מֵאֲנ֖וּ קַ֣חַת מוּסָ֑ר חִזְּק֤וּ פְנֵיהֶם֙ מִסֶּ֔לַע מֵאֲנ֖וּ לָשֽׁוּב	3		Yahweh, are not your eyes for faithfulness? You have stricken them and they have not writhed. You have consumed them. They would not receive warning. You have made their faces resolute. From a cliff, they would not return.	3e	4C	30 13
וַאֲנִ֣י אָמַ֔רְתִּי אַךְ־דַּלִּ֖ים הֵ֑ם נוֹאֲל֕וּ כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יָדְעוּ֙ דֶּ֣רֶךְ יְהוָ֔ה מִשְׁפַּ֖ט אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם	4		And I, I said, Surely they are the weak. They are in their dotage, for they do not know the way of Yahweh, the judgment of their God.	3e	4C	10 17
אֵֽלֲכָה־לִּ֤י אֶל־הַגְּדֹלִים֙ וַאֲדַבְּרָ֣ה אוֹתָ֔ם כִּ֣י הֵ֗מָּה יָדְעוּ֙ דֶּ֣רֶךְ יְהוָ֔ה מִשְׁפַּ֖ט אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם אַ֣ךְ הֵ֤מָּה יַחְדָּו֙ שָׁ֣בְרוּ עֹ֔ל נִתְּק֖וּ מוֹסֵרֽוֹת	5		Let me go myself to the great, and I will speak with them, for they, they do know the way of Yahweh, the judgment of their God. But these, as one, they have broken shackle, snapped bonds.	3e	4C	29 13
עַל־כֵּן֩ הִכָּ֨ם אַרְיֵ֜ה מִיַּ֗עַר זְאֵ֤ב עֲרָבוֹת֙ יְשָׁדְדֵ֔ם נָמֵ֤ר שֹׁקֵד֙ עַל־עָ֣רֵיהֶ֔ם כָּל־הַיּוֹצֵ֥א מֵהֵ֖נָּה יִטָּרֵ֑ף כִּ֤י רַבּוּ֙ פִּשְׁעֵיהֶ֔ם עָצְמ֖וּ מְשׁוּבוֹתֵיהֶֽם	6		So lion will strike them from the forest. Wolf of evenings will devastate them. Leopard will be vigilant over their cities. Everyone that comes forth from them, it will tear. For their transgressions are multiplied, numerous their reversals.	3e	4C	35 13
אֵ֤י לָזֹאת֙ אֶֽסְלַֽח־לָ֔ךְ בָּנַ֣יִךְ עֲזָב֔וּנִי וַיִּשָּׁבְע֖וּ בְּלֹ֣א אֱלֹהִ֑ים וָאַשְׂבִּ֤עַ אוֹתָם֙ וַיִּנְאָ֔פוּ וּבֵ֥ית זוֹנָ֖ה יִתְגֹּדָֽדוּ	7	C	How for this will I forgive you? Your children have forsaken me and they swear by not gods. And I had satisfied them, and they committed adultery, and with a house of harlotry they collaborated.	3e	4C	22 18
סוּסִ֥ים מְיֻזָּנִ֖ים מַשְׁכִּ֣ים הָי֑וּ אִ֛ישׁ אֶל־אֵ֥שֶׁת רֵעֵ֖הוּ יִצְהָֽלוּ	8		Horses plump from lust they were, each neighing to the woman of his associate.	3d	4B	10 10
הַֽעַל־אֵ֥לֶּה לוֹא־אֶפְקֹ֖ד נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֑ה וְאִם֙ בְּג֣וֹי אֲשֶׁר־כָּזֶ֔ה לֹ֥א תִתְנַקֵּ֖ם נַפְשִֽׁי	9		About these will I not visit? An oracle of Yahweh. And with a nation that is like this, will my integrity not be avenged?	3e	4B	12 15
עֲל֤וּ בְשָׁרוֹתֶ֙יהָ֙ וְשַׁחֵ֔תוּ וְכָלָ֖ה אַֽל־תַּעֲשׂ֑וּ הָסִ֙ירוּ֙ נְטִ֣ישׁוֹתֶ֔יהָ כִּ֛י ל֥וֹא לַיהוָ֖ה הֵֽמָּה	10		Ascend on her barriers and destroy, but a consuming end you will not make. Put aside her tendrils, for they are not of Yahweh.	3d	4C	18 14
כִּי֩ בָג֨וֹד בָּגְד֜וּ בִּ֗י בֵּ֧ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל וּבֵ֥ית יְהוּדָ֖ה נְאֻם־יְהוָֽה	11		For a garment of treachery against me are the house of Israel and the house of Judah, an oracle of Yahweh.	3c	3g	19
כִּֽחֲשׁוּ֙ בַּיהוָ֔ה וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ לֹא־ה֑וּא וְלֹא־תָב֤וֹא עָלֵ֙ינוּ֙ רָעָ֔ה וְחֶ֥רֶב וְרָעָ֖ב ל֥וֹא נִרְאֶֽה	12		They have dissimulated against Yahweh, and they say, It is not he. And, No evil will come upon us, and sword or famine has not appeared.	3e	4C	9 17
וְהַנְּבִיאִים֙ יִֽהְי֣וּ לְר֔וּחַ וְהַדִּבֵּ֖ר אֵ֣ין בָּהֶ֑ם כֹּ֥ה יֵעָשֶׂ֖ה לָהֶֽם	13		And the prophets, they will be for the wind. And the word is not in them. Thus it will be done to them.	3e	4B	16 6
לָכֵ֗ן כֹּֽה־אָמַ֤ר יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י צְבָא֔וֹת יַ֚עַן דַּבֶּרְכֶ֔ם אֶת־הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה הִנְנִ֣י נֹתֵן֩ דְּבָרַ֨י בְּפִ֜יךָ לְאֵ֗שׁ וְהָעָ֥ם הַזֶּ֛ה עֵצִ֖ים וַאֲכָלָֽתַם	14		Therefore thus says Yahweh, the God of hosts, Because you speak this word, note me well, I will give my words in your mouth for fire and this people, trees, and it will devour them.	3d	4C	24 24
הִנְנִ֣י מֵבִיא֩ עֲלֵיכֶ֨ם גּ֧וֹי מִמֶּרְחָ֛ק בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֑ה גּ֣וֹי ׀ אֵיתָ֣ן ה֗וּא גּ֤וֹי מֵעוֹלָם֙ ה֔וּא גּ֚וֹי לֹא־תֵדַ֣ע לְשֹׁנ֔וֹ וְלֹ֥א תִשְׁמַ֖ע מַה־יְדַבֵּֽר	15		Note me well, I will bring against you a nation from afar, O house of Israel, an oracle of Yahweh. A perennial nation it is. A nation from everlasting it is, a nation whose tongue you do not know, and you will not hear what it will speak.	3c	4C	21 26
אַשְׁפָּת֖וֹ כְּקֶ֣בֶר פָּת֑וּחַ כֻּלָּ֖ם גִּבּוֹרִֽים	16		Its quiver is as an open tomb. All of them are valiant.	3e	4B	9 5
וְאָכַ֨ל קְצִֽירְךָ֜ וְלַחְמֶ֗ךָ יֹאכְלוּ֙ בָּנֶ֣יךָ וּבְנוֹתֶ֔יךָ יֹאכַ֤ל צֹאנְךָ֙ וּבְקָרֶ֔ךָ יֹאכַ֥ל גַּפְנְךָ֖ וּתְאֵנָתֶ֑ךָ יְרֹשֵׁ֞שׁ עָרֵ֣י מִבְצָרֶ֗יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַתָּ֛ה בּוֹטֵ֥חַ בָּהֵ֖נָּה בֶּחָֽרֶב	17		And it will eat your harvest, and your bread that your sons and your daughters should eat. It will eat your flock and your herd. It will eat your vine and your fig tree. It will raze your enclosed cities that you trusted in, by the sword.	3d	4C	37 22
וְגַ֛ם בַּיָּמִ֥ים הָהֵ֖מָּה נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֑ה לֹֽא־אֶעֱשֶׂ֥ה אִתְּכֶ֖ם כָּלָֽה	18		And even in those days, an oracle of Yahweh, I will not make of you a consuming end.	3d	4A	13 7
וְהָיָה֙ כִּ֣י תֹאמְר֔וּ תַּ֣חַת מֶ֗ה עָשָׂ֨ה יְהֹוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֵ֛ינוּ לָ֖נוּ אֶת־כָּל־אֵ֑לֶּה וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר עֲזַבְתֶּ֤ם אוֹתִי֙ וַתַּעַבְד֞וּ אֱלֹהֵ֤י נֵכָר֙ בְּאַרְצְכֶ֔ם כֵּ֚ן תַּעַבְד֣וּ זָרִ֔ים בְּאֶ֖רֶץ לֹ֥א לָכֶֽם	19		And it will be that you should say, Under what end does Yahweh our God do to us all these things? And you will say to them, As you have forsaken me, and you have served the alien gods in your land, so you will serve strangers in the land that is not yours.	3c	4C	24 40
הַגִּ֥ידוּ זֹ֖את בְּבֵ֣ית יַעֲקֹ֑ב וְהַשְׁמִיע֥וּהָ בִיהוּדָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר	20		Make this clear in the house of Jacob, and broadcast it in Judah, saying,	3e	4B	9 10
שִׁמְעוּ־נָ֣א זֹ֔את עַ֥ם סָכָ֖ל וְאֵ֣ין לֵ֑ב עֵינַ֤יִם לָהֶם֙ וְלֹ֣א יִרְא֔וּ אָזְנַ֥יִם לָהֶ֖ם וְלֹ֥א יִשְׁמָֽעוּ	21		Hear, if you will, this, O silly people and without heart, Eyes they have, and see not. Ears they have, and hear not.	3e	4C	9 17
הַאוֹתִ֨י לֹא־תִירָ֜אוּ נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֗ה אִ֤ם מִפָּנַי֙ לֹ֣א תָחִ֔ילוּ אֲשֶׁר־שַׂ֤מְתִּי חוֹל֙ גְּב֣וּל לַיָּ֔ם חָק־עוֹלָ֖ם וְלֹ֣א יַעַבְרֶ֑נְהוּ וַיִּֽתְגָּעֲשׁוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א יוּכָ֔לוּ וְהָמ֥וּ גַלָּ֖יו וְלֹ֥א יַעַבְרֻֽנְהוּ	22		Me do you not fear? An oracle of Yahweh. Or from my presence do you not writhe, who set the sand of the border for the sea, an everlasting statute and not it will pass beyond it? And its waves shake, but will not overpower, and murmur but they do not pass beyond.	3e	4C	37 21
וְלָעָ֤ם הַזֶּה֙ הָיָ֔ה לֵ֖ב סוֹרֵ֣ר וּמוֹרֶ֑ה סָ֖רוּ וַיֵּלֵֽכוּ	23		But this people has a heart, rebellious and altered. They have turned aside and gone.	3e	4C	13 6
וְלֹֽא־אָמְר֣וּ בִלְבָבָ֗ם נִ֤ירָא נָא֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ הַנֹּתֵ֗ן גֶּ֛שֶׁם יוֹרֶ֥ה וּמַלְק֖וֹשׁ בְּעִתּ֑וֹ שְׁבֻע֛וֹת חֻקּ֥וֹת קָצִ֖יר יִשְׁמָר־לָֽנוּ	24		And they will not say in their heart, Let us now fear Yahweh our God, the one who gives showers, early rain and maturing rain, in its time, weeks, the decrees of harvest. He will keep watch for us.	3d	4C	30 11
עֲוֺנוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם הִטּוּ־אֵ֑לֶּה וְחַטֹּ֣אותֵיכֶ֔ם מָנְע֥וּ הַטּ֖וֹב מִכֶּֽם	25		Your iniquities bend these things, and your sins withhold good from you.	3e	4B	8 11
כִּי־נִמְצְא֥וּ בְעַמִּ֖י רְשָׁעִ֑ים יָשׁוּר֙ כְּשַׁ֣ךְ יְקוּשִׁ֔ים הִצִּ֥יבוּ מַשְׁחִ֖ית אֲנָשִׁ֥ים יִלְכֹּֽדוּ	26		For the wicked are found in my people. They scrutinize as a subsiding entrapment. They stand firm impairing. They catch persons.	3e	4B	10 18
כִּכְלוּב֙ מָ֣לֵא ע֔וֹף כֵּ֥ן בָּתֵּיהֶ֖ם מְלֵאִ֣ים מִרְמָ֑ה עַל־כֵּ֥ן גָּדְל֖וּ וַֽיַּעֲשִֽׁירוּ	27		As a cage is full of fowl, so their houses are full of deceit, so they are great and rich.	3e	4B	14 9
שָׁמְנ֣וּ עָשְׁת֗וּ גַּ֚ם עָֽבְר֣וּ דִבְרֵי־רָ֔ע דִּ֣ין לֹא־דָ֔נוּ דִּ֥ין יָת֖וֹם וְיַצְלִ֑יחוּ וּמִשְׁפַּ֥ט אֶבְיוֹנִ֖ים לֹ֥א שָׁפָֽטוּ	28		They are stout. They gleam. They even pass beyond the things of evil. The case they will not advocate: the case for an orphan. Yet they prosper. And judgment for the needy, they do not judge.	3e	4C	20 10
הַֽעַל־אֵ֥לֶּה לֹֽא־אֶפְקֹ֖ד נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֑ה אִ֚ם בְּג֣וֹי אֲשֶׁר־כָּזֶ֔ה לֹ֥א תִתְנַקֵּ֖ם נַפְשִֽׁי	29		About these things, will I not visit? An oracle of Yahweh. Or with a nation that is like this, will my integrity not be avenged?	3e	4C	12 14
שַׁמָּה֙ וְשַׁ֣עֲרוּרָ֔ה נִהְיְתָ֖ה בָּאָֽרֶץ	30		An appalling and horrendous thing is in the land.	3e	4B	13
הַנְּבִיאִ֞ים נִבְּא֣וּ־בַשֶּׁ֗קֶר וְהַכֹּהֲנִים֙ יִרְדּ֣וּ עַל־יְדֵיהֶ֔ם וְעַמִּ֖י אָ֣הֲבוּ כֵ֑ן וּמַֽה־תַּעֲשׂ֖וּ לְאַחֲרִיתָֽהּ	31		The prophets prophesy in falsehood, and the priests rule at their hand, and my people love it so. And what will you do in the aftermath?	3e	4B	25 10
