Joshua 17

This chapter compares Manasseh with Joseph. It is a comparison with undertones, subtext that may be difficult to hear.

I have succumbed to a second gloss for one stem, אוץ. Everywhere else I have managed - like an awkward jigsaw puzzle piece - to squeeze it into the gloss importune. Here I allow tight. There is no hint of comparison in the grammar. I have forced myself to agree that it may have this sense of constraint. I didn't gloss it as narrow, which I, along with many others, have used for אטם.

Perhaps I should capitalize Quince as a location name. I live near a large public property with both old and new quince trees, from which we have occasionally pilfered a few to make jelly with. So the accidental name here is a bit of a joke. Maybe Joseph would have been satisfied with pilfering some of Manasseh's quinces. But he had a tougher assignment.

1 And this was the lot for the branch of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph.
For Makir, the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of the Gilead, for he was a man of war, so there was for him the Gilead and Bashan.

2 ~ And there was, for the children of Manasseh remaining in their families, for the children of Abiezer, and for the children of Xeleq, and for the children of Asrael, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Xefar, and for the children of Shemida.
These are the children of Manasseh child of Joseph, the males in their families.

3 And for Tselofexad, child of Xefar, child of Gilead, child of Makir, child of Manasseh, there were no sons for him, but rather daughters.
And these are the names of his daughters, Maxelah, and No`ah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

4 And they approached before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua child of Nun, and before the principals, saying, Yahweh commanded Moses to give to us an inheritance among our kin,
and he gave to them, by the mandate of Yahweh, an inheritance among the kin of their father.

5 So there fell ten territories to Manasseh,
besides those from the land of the Gilead and the Bashan that are from beyond Jordan,

6 C for the daughters of Manasseh inherited an inheritance among his sons,
and the land of the Gilead, that was for the remaining children of Manasseh.

7 And the border of Manasseh is from the Mikmethah that is over before Shechem,
and the border goes to the right side, to the inhabitants of the eye of the quince.
3e 4C 21
16
8 To Manasseh belonged the land of the quince,
but the quince to the border of Manasseh was for the children of Ephraim.

9 And the border descends to the wadi of Qenah southward of the wadi. These cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh.
And the border of Manasseh is from the north of the wadi, and its exeunts toward the sea.
3e 4C 29

10 B Southward was of Ephraim, and northward of Manasseh, and the sea its border.
And in Asher they come across from the north, and in Issachar from the sunrise.
3e 4B 19
16
11 And Manasseh has in Issachar and in Asher, the house of Shean and her built-up areas, Yiblam and her built-up areas, and the inhabitants of Dor and her built-up areas, and the inhabitants of Endor, and her built-up areas, and the inhabitants of Taanah and her built-up areas, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and her built-up areas,
three elevations.

12 And the children of Manasseh were not able to dispossess these cities,
but the Canaanite attempted to settle in that land.
3e 4C 19
15
13 And it would be that the children of Israel were resolute and consigned the Canaanite to forced service,
but they did not dispossess them.
3e 4C 20
7

14 And the children of Joseph spoke with Joshua, saying,
For what purpose have you given to me an inheritance of one lot, and one territory, when I am an abundant people in that Yahweh thus has further blessed me?
3e 4C 14
34
15 And Joshua said to them, If you are an abundant people, go up for yourselves to the forest, and create for yourselves there in the land of the Perizzite and the Titans,
if mount Ephraim is too tight for you.
3e 4C 39
8
16 And the children of Joseph said, The mountain will not be found suitable for us.
And iron chariot is in every Canaanite settlement in the land of the valley, those who are in Beth-Shean and her built-up areas, and those in the valley of Jezreel.
3e 4C 14
42
17 And Joshua said to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim, and to Manasseh, saying,
An abundant people you are, and power great is yours. One lot is not for you.
3e 4C 20
19

18 B For mountain is yours, because it is forest and you will create it, and it will be for you, its exeunts.
For you will dispossess the Canaanite, though he has iron chariot, though he is courageous.
