Isaiah 32 | Fn | Min | Max | Syll
1 | f | Lo, for righteousness a sovereign will reign, and re nobility, they will influence for judgment. | 3e | 4A | 8 9 |
וְהָיָה־אִ֥ישׁ כְּמַֽחֲבֵא־ר֖וּחַ וְסֵ֣תֶר זָ֑רֶם כְּפַלְגֵי־מַ֣יִם בְּצָי֔וֹן כְּצֵ֥ל סֶֽלַע־כָּבֵ֖ד בְּאֶ֥רֶץ עֲיֵפָֽה | 2 | And each will become as camouflage for wind, and a hiding place from inundation, as streams of water in arid places, like the shadow of a heavy cliff in an exhausted earth. | 3e | 4B | 15 19
3 | And the eyes of those who see will not look away, and the ears of whose who hear will pay attention. | 3e | 4B | 8 8
וּלְבַ֥ב נִמְהָרִ֖ים יָבִ֣ין לָדָ֑עַת וּלְשׁ֣וֹן עִלְּגִ֔ים תְּמַהֵ֖ר לְדַבֵּ֥ר צָחֽוֹת | 4 | And the heart of the impetuous will discern knowledge, and the stammering tongue will be impetuous to speak glowingly. | 3e | 4B | 10 12
5 | Senseless will no longer be called willing, nor will the knave be said to be crying for help. | 3d | 4A | 9 9
כִּ֤י נָבָל֙ נְבָלָ֣ה יְדַבֵּ֔ר וְלִבּ֖וֹ יַעֲשֶׂה־אָ֑וֶן לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת חֹ֗נֶף וּלְדַבֵּ֤ר אֶל־יְהוָה֙ תּוֹעָ֔ה לְהָרִיק֙ נֶ֣פֶשׁ רָעֵ֔ב וּמַשְׁקֶ֥ה צָמֵ֖א יַחְסִֽיר | 6 | C | For senseless speaks senselessness and its heart makes mischief, to do hypocrisy, and to speak wandering to Yahweh, and to make a famished self empty and to deprive drink from the thirsty. | 3e | 4C | 17 27 |
וְכֵלַ֖י כֵּלָ֣יו רָעִ֑ים ה֚וּא זִמּ֣וֹת יָעָ֔ץ לְחַבֵּ֤ל עֲנִיִּים֙ בְּאִמְרֵי־שֶׁ֔קֶר וּבְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶבְי֖וֹן מִשְׁפָּֽט | 7 | And knave! its instruments are evil. It schemes to take counsel to inflict pain on the poor while saying falsehood, even when the word of the needy is astute. | 3e | 4C | 7 22
8 | But the willing willingly take counsel, and such to willing acts will arise. | 3e | 4B | 8 8
Trusting daughters, give ear to what I say. | 3e | 4B | 13 10
יָמִים֙ עַל־שָׁנָ֔ה תִּרְגַּ֖זְנָה בֹּֽטְח֑וֹת כִּ֚י כָּלָ֣ה בָצִ֔יר אֹ֖סֶף בְּלִ֥י יָבֽוֹא | 10 | From days to years you will shudder trusting, for faint is the vintage. Ingathering will not come. | 3e | 4C | 10 11
Shudder you who trust. Strip and be laid bare, and be attired over your reins. | 3e | 4B | 11 15
12 | To breasts wailing, to fields coveted, to a vine bearing fruit, | 3e | 4A | 5 10
עַ֚ל אַדְמַ֣ת עַמִּ֔י ק֥וֹץ שָׁמִ֖יר תַּֽעֲלֶ֑ה כִּ֚י עַל־כָּל־בָּתֵּ֣י מָשׂ֔וֹשׂ קִרְיָ֖ה עַלִּיזָֽה | 13 | C | To the ground of my people, bramble-spike will come up, over all the houses of joy, the town exultant. | 3e | 4C | 11 12 |
כִּֽי־אַרְמ֣וֹן נֻטָּ֔שׁ הֲמ֥וֹן עִ֖יר עֻזָּ֑ב עֹ֣פֶל וָבַ֜חַן הָיָ֨ה בְעַ֤ד מְעָרוֹת֙ עַד־עוֹלָ֔ם מְשׂ֥וֹשׂ פְּרָאִ֖ים מִרְעֵ֥ה עֲדָרִֽים | 14 | For the citadel will be abandoned, the tumult of the city forsaken. Promontory and watchtower will be for caves for ever, the joy of wild donkeys, the pasture of troops. | 3e | 4C | 10 25
עַד־יֵ֨עָרֶ֥ה עָלֵ֛ינוּ ר֖וּחַ מִמָּר֑וֹם וְהָיָ֤ה מִדְבָּר֙ לַכַּרְמֶ֔ל וְהַכַּרְמֶ֖ל לַיַּ֥עַר יֵחָשֵֽׁב | 15 | Until spirit from on high is exposed over us, and wilderness becomes a plantation, and the plantation be reckoned as forest. | 3d | 4C | 12 18
16 | Then judgment will dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness in the plantation will settle. | 3e | 4A | 8 8
וְהָיָ֛ה מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה הַצְּדָקָ֖ה שָׁל֑וֹם וַֽעֲבֹדַת֙ הַצְּדָקָ֔ה הַשְׁקֵ֥ט וָבֶ֖טַח עַד־עוֹלָֽם | 17 | And the deed of righteousness will be peace, and the service of righteousness quiet and trust for evermore. | 3d | 4A | 11 15
וְיָשַׁ֥ב עַמִּ֖י בִּנְוֵ֣ה שָׁל֑וֹם וּֽבְמִשְׁכְּנוֹת֙ מִבְטַחִ֔ים וּבִמְנוּחֹ֖ת שַׁאֲנַנּֽוֹת | 18 | And my people will settle at home in peace, and in trusted dwelling-places and in tranquil resting-places. | 3e | 4B | 9 15
19 | And when hail descends on the forest, then in a lowly place, humble is the city. | 3e | 4B | 9 8
20 | Happy are you who sow over all waters, who set loose the foot of the bull and the ass. | 3e | 4A | 9 11 |

Isaiah 32
Wood is gone from one root where it has been for 5 years. That is now forest everywhere to allow wood to be used for the wood of the altar. I am slow - I don't know quite why it took me so long to make this decision. I suppose it was because I was married to wood in the first book, my long treatise on the psalms, Seeing the Psalter, and my first foray into translation. (Good thing I started there or I would never have come this far.) What do you think, is it wind or spirit that makes רוח a frame for this chapter?
