2 Samuel 14

We come again to the end of a story first. But these are all unfamiliar to me. I have not read Samuel for ages. I have a vague memory of being told the manuscripts were a complex of sources and discontinuities. I probably would not have noticed on a first few readings in translation anyway, especially in the ignorance of new faith.

Verse 4 - an extra phrase at the beginning. The sense is initial approach but the word is אמר.

Verse 11. How confidently the king is portrayed, that he can promise protection to a child from death in this fierce world. How brave the woman in verse 13. And where Joab got the words of verse 14 deserves some slow thought. Here is a minor character, teaching the king. David's extremes of emotion over Absalom - are they an insight into the extremes of emotion of God? Of course you will tell me that God has no emotions.

Absalom is the ultimate dandy. Weighing one's own hair! Not cutting it for days and days - a year I suppose but it is an idiom I have no knowledge of. A new gloss for אבן stone is needed to indicate the standard stone used in a balance. I can't help thinking there must be a technical term for such a weight, but I haven't found one so I extended the preposition (in ב rendered as using) instead. I could use weight. But it would need a modifier to bring up the balance concept and avoid measuring the hair against the weight of the king. And I would lose the relationship to stone. (JB "two-hundred shekels, king's weight can be read as if the king weighed 200 shekels.)

Yes it's a bit odd to have people falling on their noses earthward. The whole story seems to contain doubles of itself and is awkward to read in any translation. If you, like me, are trying to learn to read Hebrew, read it out loud and connect the sounds to the English as an exercise. I admit I do this too little since the computer helps me skim along quickly. This has the potential disadvantage of propagating my errors and inconsistencies. (I fixed a few dozen that were tangentially exposed when I did this chapter.)

2 Samuel 14 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And Joab child of Tseruyah, knew,
that the heart of the king was on Absalom.

2 And Joab sent to Tekoa, and he took from there a shrewd woman.
And he said to her, Lament please, and put on please, garments of lament, and do not make yourself up with oil, and be as a wife of lament, these many days, for what is dead.

3 And you will come to the king and speak to him like this word.
And Joab put the words in her mouth.

4 ~ And the Tekoan woman said to the king, and she fell on her nose earthward, and prostrated herself,
and said, Save, O king.

5 And the king said to her, What is it to you?
And she said, Lamentably, a widow woman I am, and dead is my man.

6 And your handmaid had two sons, and they struggled, the two of them, in the field, and there was none to deliver between them,
and the one struck the other and put him to death.
3c 4C 25
15

7 And behold all the family arose against your handmaid, and they said, Give the one who struck his kin, that we may put him to death for the integrity of his kin that he has slain, and we will exterminate also the heir.
So they will quench my coal that is still here, so as not to lay up for my man, name or residue, over the face of the ground.
3c 4C 47
30
8 And the king said to the woman, Go to your house,
and I myself will command concerning you.

9

9 And the Tekoan woman said to the king, Concerning me, my lord O king, is the iniquity, and concerning the house of my father.
And the king and his throne be innocent.
3d 4C 29
9

10 And the king said,
Whoever speaks to you, bring him to me, and he will not again any more touch you.

11 And she said, Let the king remember please, Yahweh your God, the excess of the redeemer of the blood to destroy, that they do not exterminate my child.
And he said, Yahweh lives. Not a hair of your child will fall earthward.
3d 4C 34
18
12 And the woman said, Let your handmaid speak please, to my lord the king, a word.
And he said, Speak.
3c 4A 22
6

13 And the woman said, So why have you devised such as this against the people of God?
For the king is speaking this word as if guilty, lest the king return his banished.
3c 4C 19
26

14 For to die, we will die, and are as water wrung out earthward, that will not be gathered,
and God will not lift up a cadaver, but he devises devices, lest one being banished, be banished from him.

15 ~ And now that I come to speak to the king, my lord, this thing, for the people have made me fear,
and your handmaid said, I speak, please, to the king. Maybe the king will do the word of his maidservant.
3d 4C 29

16 C For the king will hear to deliver his maidservant from the palm of the man,
to exterminate me and my children as one from the inheritance of God.
3e 4C 17
18

17 And your handmaid said, Please, the word of my lord the king will be for rest.
For like the angel of God, so is my lord the king to hear what is good or evil, and Yahweh your God will be with you.
3d 4C 20
33

18 And the king answered and he said to the woman, Please do not conceal from me the word that I am asking you.
And the woman said, Let, please, my lord the king speak.
3e 4C 33
16

19 And the king said, Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?
And the woman answered and she said, As lives your integrity, my lord O king, if there is any to the right or to the left from all that my lord the king has spoken, for your servant Joab himself has commanded me, and he himself put in the mouth of your handmaid all these words.
3d 4C 15
65

20 It was with intent to turn around the face of the matter that your servant Joab constructed this word,
and my lord is wise as the wisdom of the messenger of God to know all that is in the land.
3d 4C 25
24
21 And the king said to Joab, Behold, if you will, I have done this thing,
so go, let the lad Absalom return.
3d 4C 21
12

22 And Joab fell to his face earthward, and prostrated himself, and blessed the king.
And Joab said, Today your servant has known that I have found grace in your eyes, my lord, O king, in that the king has done the word of your servant.

39

and he brought Absalom to Jerusalem.

24 And the king said, Let him circle around to his house, but my face, he will not see.
And Absalom circled around to his house, and the face of the king, he did not see.
3e 4C 17
17
25 But like Absalom there was not a man so much praised for beauty in all Israel.
From the sole of his foot to his scalp there was not in him a spot.
3c 4C 19
13
26 And when he shaved his head, (and it was at the end of days and days that he shaved, when it was heavy over him then he shaved),
then he weighed the hair of his head, two hundred shekels using the stone of the king.
3e 4C 29
19

27 And there were born to Absalom three sons and one daughter, and her name was Tamar.
She was a woman beautiful of appearance.
3e 4C 21
9
28 And Absalom settled in Jerusalem two years,
but the face of the king he did not see.
3c 4B 15
8
29 And Absalom sent to Joab to send him out to the king, but he did not consent to come to him.
And he sent further a second time, and he did not consent to come.
3e 4C 26
12

30 And he said to his servants, See the share of Joab adjacent to me, and his barley there. Go and char it in the fire.
And the servants of Absalom charred the share in the fire.
3c 4C 31
15
31 And Joab arose and he came to Absalom towards the house,
and said to him, Why has your servant charred the share that is mine in the fire.
3c 4B 15
23
32 And Absalom said to Joab, Behold, I sent to you to say, Come here and I will send you out to the king to say, Why have I come from Geshur? It was better for me while I was there. And now let me see the face of the king.
And if there is in me iniquity, then let him put me to death.
3e 4C 46
21
33 And Joab came to the king and made it clear to him, and he called to Absalom, and he came in to the king, and he prostrated himself to him on his nose earthward before the king.
And the king kissed Absalom.
