Ezra 4

Another chapter of Aramaic, the last book with 3 chapters left to do. Paraphrasing the sense here would be a lot easier than the mapping I am attempting. My intention remains to provide a close translation for the potential underlay of the music (though I doubt anyone would sing these Aramaic chapters!)

Verse 3, I am surprised at how the word together can be used to exclude. But it is obvious that exclusion is a requirement at this stage. The 'house' is not 'a house of prayer for all peoples' (Isaiah 56:7) at this time.

The names of verse 9 are greatly simplified in JB and NIV. Here is the fragment from NIV:  ... judges and officials over the men from Tripolis, Persia, Erech, and Babylon, the Elamites of Susa, ... For someone interested in names, that verse has a lot of foreign paint on the puzzle pieces.

Verses 10, 11, 17. I have taken the stem of the last word as עת time. It is possible that the n is a characteristic elision of the sound. (A guess).

Verse 14 - another metaphor or idiom - we salt with the salt of the palace.

Ezra 4 Fn Min Max Syll
1 When the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard,
that the children of the exiled were building the temple to Yahweh the God of Israel,

2 They came close to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of the ancestors, and said to them, Let us build with you, for as you, we search out your God.
And his we are, sacrificing from the days of Esarchadon, the king of Ashur, who brought us up here.

3 And to them, Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the residue of the heads of the ancestors of Israel said, It is not for you, but for us to build a house to our God.
For together, we ourselves will build to Yahweh, the God of Israel, as the king has commanded us, Cyrus king of Persia.

4 And it happened that the people of the land made the hand of the people of Judah slacken,
and vexed them in building.

all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, and till the kingdom of Darius king of Persia.

6 And in the reign of Ahasuerus, at the commencement of his reign,
they wrote an accusation to the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 And in the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Miteradat, Tabeel, and the residue of the entitled wrote to Artaxerxes, king of Persia.
And the writing of the epistle was inscribed in Aramaic and given interpretation in Aramaic.

to Artaxerxes the king, likewise.

9 Then Rehum, a superior of warrant, and Shimshai, a secretary, and the residue of their confederates,
the advocates, and the legates of Persia, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Arkevites, the Babelites, the Shushankites, the Dehites, the Elamites,

10 And the residue of the clans that Asnappar exiled, (the great and the esteemed), and settled them in the towns of Samaria,
and the residue beyond the river, and at such a time.

11 This is a copy of the letter that they sent to him, to Artaxerxes the king,
Your servants, mortals beyond the river, and at such a time,

12 Be it known to the king that the Judeans who came from you to us have arrived at Jerusalem.
The town of mutiny and stink they build, and a barrier they have consolidated, and the foundations they have threaded.
3e 4C 30
25
13 Now let it be known to the king that if this town is built, and her barriers consolidated,
levy, tariff, and toll, they will not yield, and the revenue of the sovereigns, you will affront.
3e 4C 28
19

14 Now all because we salt with the salt of the palace, and the exposure of the king was not proper for us to envision,
on this we have sent and informed the king,
3e 4C 27

15 ~ That an enquiry be made in a book of the archives of your ancestors, and you will find, in a book of the archives, and you will know that this town was a mutinous town and an affront to kings, and provinces. And they have cultivated sedition within it from days of old.
So this town, it was deserted.

16 We ourselves make it known to the king that if this town is built, and her barriers consolidated,
in view of this, there will be no part beyond the river for you.

17 The king sent an edict to Rehum, a superior of warrant, and Shimshai, a secretary, and the residue of their confederates that were settled in Samaria, and the residue beyond the river,
Peace, and at such a time.

11

18 The epistle that you sent to us,
distinctly clear, has been recited before me.
3e 4A 11

19 From me was set a warrant, and they enquired, and they found that this town, from days of old, against kings has shown partiality, and mutinied,
and sedition has been cultivated in it.
3e 4C 30
10

20 And energetic kings have been over Jerusalem, and have taken authority over all beyond the river,
and levy, tariff, and toll was provided to them.
3d 4B 23
13

21 Now set in place a warrant that these men of valour be stopped,
and this town not be built, until from me a warrant be set in place.
3e 4B 15
16
22 And you be admonished against neglect of service concerning this.
Why should there be much hurt to affront kings?
3d 4B 13
13

23 Then from that, the copy of the epistle of Artaxerxes, the king, having been recited before Rehum, and Shimshai, a secretary, and their confederates,
they went brashly to Jerusalem, to the Judeans, and made them stop with a strong arm and force.
3c 4C 33
26

24 Then the administration stopped for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.
And it was stopped until the second year of the reign of Darius, king of Persia.
