Daniel 6

A new week, a revived computer, and a new chapter of Daniel - by Bob. It was the worst of times last week when my computer failed to reboot after an update. I am still recovering as I write this. None of my data was lost, but all the apps were lost since we had to recover and reinstall Windows. Then reinstall and reconfigure IIS and Oracle. They want all Borgs in the cloud. We are lost when our wires are cut.

Jim Davila has pointed out a project running since the 1990s but I don't think anything is online yet. I hope to finish, and I wonder if I will now be able to understand their output. Here it is. Wow - no wonder it is over 25 years in the doing! (I will admit I am stumped as to how to publish my work without the tools I am currently using offline. They are quite capable of secure multi-user online usage, but I will need to seek advice on how to do it and host it somewhere.)

Now to the awkwardness of this next Aramaic chapter! I hardly know what to say. Perhaps I will occupy myself with revisions when I complete this project.

There are some plays on the idea of a warrant and warranty (טעם). This is the word for taste in Hebrew and also madness. I have this really odd desire not to overlap even the Hebrew and Aramaic, as if I would have to invent an English for these few sections. You can usually guess what is intended. And this is a very funny chapter, a revenge motif similar to that in Esther and other Daniel stories. Avoid schadenfreude. The story should carry a warning: Don't do this at home.

Devouring someone's winks - an odd phrase (also Daniel 3:8). Usually interpreted as slander. But I have already used that gloss (though I could allow the duplicate since I only used it in Hebrew). See Psalm 15 from a few days ago - literally go on foot with the tongue. Foot in mouth gossip - another ancient metaphor.)

Daniel 6 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And Darius the Mede received the kingdom,
as a child of sixty two years.
3e 4A 12
2 It was agreeable before Darius that he uphold over the kingdom, a hundred and twenty as satraps,
that they may be in all the kingdom.
3e 4B 26
3 And over them three presidents, of whom Daniel was one,
that these satraps would provide their warranty, and the king would not be affronted.
3e 4C 18
4 Then this Daniel, he was always over the presidents and the satraps,
all because a spirit of excellence was in him, and the king thought to place him over all the kingdoms.
3e 4C 24
5 Then the presidents and the satraps were seeking pretext to find against Daniel concerning the kingdom.
But no pretext or impairment were they able to find, all because he was faithful. Nor was anything amiss or any impairment found in him.
3c 4B 32
6 ~ Then these men of valour said, We will not find against this Daniel any pretext,
except we find against him according to the dictate of his God.
3c 4C 24
7 ~ Then these presidents and satraps thronged to the king,
and thus they said to him, Darius, the king, forever may you live.
3e 4C 20
8 All the presidents of the kingdom, the prefects and the satraps have consulted the consultants and the viceroys to raise up a royal placement and to actuate a bond,
that anyone that would seek a petition from any God or man for thirty days, except from you, O king, will be heaved into a den of lions.
3e 4C 43
9 Now O king, you place the warning, and ratify the writing,
that it not be adjusted according to the dictate of the Medes and the Persians, that it not be removed.
3c 4B 15
10 All because of this,
the king, Darius, ratified the writing and the bond.
3e 4A 5
11 ~ And when Daniel knew that the writing was ratified, he went to his house, and his casements were open in his upper room towards Jerusalem.
And three sessions per day, he knelt on his knees, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had always done from before this.
3e 4C 35
12 ~ Then these men of valour thronged, and found Daniel,
seeking and supplicating before his God.
3e 4C 19
13 ~ Then they approached, and they said before the king, (about the bond of the king), Have you not ratified a bond that every mortal that would seek from any God or man for thirty days except from you, O king, will be heaved into the den of lions?
The king answered and said, The thing is reliable according to the dictate of the Medes and the Persians, that it not be removed.
3c 4B 57
14 ~ Then they answered, and they said before the king, That Daniel, who is from the children of the exiles that are Judean, did not render to you, O king, the warrant, nor the warning that you have ratified.
But three sessions per day, he seeks his petition.
3e 4C 43
15 Then the king, when he heard the speech, was much disgusted in himself, and on Daniel he set his heart to liberate him,
and to the going of the sun, he struggled to deliver him.
3c 4B 30
16 Then these men of valour thronged to the king,
and they said to the king, Know, O king, that the dictate of the Medes and the Persians is that every bond or placement that the king raises up, is not to be adjusted.
3d 4C 13
17 Then the king pronounced, and they brought Daniel, and heaved him into the den of lions.
The king answered and said to Daniel, Your God whom you revere in your generation, he will liberate you.
3e 4C 24
18 And one stone was brought and set in place on the mouth of the den.
And the king sealed it with his signet and with the signet of his overlords, that no one be pleased to make an adjustment for Daniel.
3d 4B 15
19 ~ Then the king went to his palace, and housed himself fasting and without entertainment brought before him.
And his sleep fled from him.
3e 4C 24
20 Then the king arose in the glistening illumination,
and brashly to the den of the lions, he went.
3e 4B 13
21 And when he approached the den, to Daniel with a pained voice, he appealed.
The king answered and said to Daniel, Daniel, servant of the living God, your God whom you revere in your generation, has he been able to liberate you from the lions?
3e 4C 18
22 Then Daniel with the king made a speech,
May the king forever live.
3e 4A 11
23 My God sent his angel and locked the mouth of the lions, and they have not hurt me.
All because before him, clearness was found for me. And also before you, O king, no hurt have I done.
3d 4C 21
24 Then the king was much pleased over him, and of Daniel he said to take him up from the den.
And Daniel was taken up from the den and no hurt was found in him, for he believed in his God.
3e 4B 25
25 And the king pronounced, and they brought those valiant men that devoured his winks (of Daniel), and to the den of the lions they heaved them, their children, and their women.
And they had not come to the bottom of the den, yet the lions had authority in them, and all their strong bones, they ground finely.
3e 4C 40
26 Then Darius the king wrote to all peoples, clans, and tongues that tenant in all the earth, Peace be augmented to you. 3c 4B 34
27 From me is set a warrant that in every authority of my kingdom, they will quaver and be perturbed from before his God, that of Daniel.
For he is the living God, and placed forever, and his kingdom is one that not will inflict pain, and his authority will be endless to the conclusion.
3e 4C 34
28 He liberates and delivers, and does signs and marvels in the heavens and in the earth,
who has liberated Daniel from the hand of the lions.
3e 4C 20
29 And this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius,
and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
