The stem (AKA lemma form) is like a sounds-like categorization of the data and is usually derivable from the word form. (Some word forms are ambiguous.) I don't yet have a transparent design or consistent decision for this overlap from a data point of view. This is a decision I can delay without cost. And for now the result is invisible, until I publish a full glossary.
(The Names section of the concordance is 200 pages. What fun, I could check through all the names at one go (no thanks) ... - if only this concordance was in a database instead of a book!)
In this chapter you will note:
The term for lamb אמרין occurs only in the plural in Aramaic. Otherwise the stem אמר is the usual say, etc. What is a lamb that it should be so?
The term for ram דכר, has an apparently related term דכרונה, memoria, but דכרונה is related to the Hebrew זכר remember. ז zayin and ד daleth indicate a difference in pronunciation between the two languages. Both letters could easily morph aurally and they are not that different visually. דכר is related to זכר as male. Recall that the Hebrew stem זכר has these two quite distinct homonyms.
The Aramaic פלק (stream in Hebrew) not equivalent to חלג (divide, division 75 times) in Hebrew. Both stems are used in verse 18 so I must distinguish them. I ended up reversing the usage of KJV which confuses the two stems in its usage.
Note the repetition of אספרנא promptly, from chapter 5. I have removed the synonym fast. I find that misleading. The repetition of the word used by the enemies of the temple must be repeated in the king's edict for them to get the point. Who is in charge? Can the gangs make errors? Is the king benevolent? What difficult questions. No difference today.
Artaxerxes is spelled two different ways in the Hebrew shin-shin and shin-sin. I have let the clearly common stem use shin-sin. The name transliterates into Artaxshasta. Perhaps this is a possible source for a character in the Narnia Chronicles.
Just this once I have allowed the sense of appeasement in the sacrificial cult word נוח since the words are uttered by a foreigner concerning the God who is in Jerusalem, and the primitive sense of such intercession is not out of character. (It may be in character for the Hebrews as well, but in my bias, it should not be for us. The testimony to the character of Yahweh is of love, care, and kindness. Such a God does not punish and does not need appeasing, though you could read it into my usage of restful for נוח, the relevant stem. Perfect love casts out fear.)
Part of this awkward journey is finding language that can be shared between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, not to mention the other great traditions of the world where love, care, and kindness are not in short supply. All such things are compromised by the will to power, exploitation, and advantage. Heathen is a gloss reflecting superiority that I have never needed. What the people and priests cleanse themselves from here is not the impurity of other nations, but their own impurity in their own promised land. The icon of the promised land is part of the bootstrap of life.
