Ezra 7

Part of this chapter is Hebrew and part Aramaic. Biblical Aramaic and Hebrew seem to have more stems in common than they do that are different. Even when different, their stems may be close. E.g. in the stem for counsel, the Hebrew יעץ in Aramaic is יעט. The square script is itself first the Aramaic script. It has a number of letters that seem to duplicate sounds. It is not surprising that some letters might have morphed from one dialect to another, eventually the dialect becoming a separate tongue. There are dozens of Semitic languages.

The atenah in verse 15 falls in the middle of a construct. The definite article applied to silver and gold  in the first half of the verse is implied by the phrase following in the second half of the verse. The split is unusual but so is the length of the second part of the construct.

For the stem עבד I continue to avoid the gloss do (though I have used it in Daniel 3:32). Aramaic appears to use עבד for both serve and do. Perhaps the Aramaic should sound even more foreign than Hebrew to our ears.

Verse 22 is not a blank cheque. Based on the music, without requisition seems to apply only to salt.
