1 Samuel 8

After this, 200 more chapters to do.

Here we have again that phrase hear שׁמע followed by קול with the prefixed ב, which I have consistently rendered as hear with ... voice.

I have not looked in detail at the music, but I put it here for easy reference. Click full screen and you can see the music in one window and the text in the other. I put it here for verses 7 to 9, a point where Yahweh is recording his rejection as king.

This passage does not support the divine right of kings (or any other monarch). The monarch may well represent a unity and a head for a people and may be very attractive. And it is clear that clergy-run theocracies are not such a form of government. But presidents can also be poor heads whether by example or for focusing coherence. Most of them are like dictators, corrupted by power, not paying attention to the greater good, a concept we all have trouble with in any case.

Will I, even alone, allow the mystery to govern in me? Can I when I do not understand the submission that is required of all to the same mystery that calls us out of pure me-first behaviour?

Verse 13 Nathan MacDonald (no relation) suggests flavorers, for verse 13 - such flavoring of the food would be the intent of perfumers (JB). See JBL Vol 136 #4 p 822, Gale A. Yee, He will take the best of your fields: Royal Feasts and Rural Extraction. Who gets to eat, who gets to serve and who gets to clean up? All very relevant questions in governance in any era.

1 Samuel 8 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And it happened as Samuel aged,
that he set his children as judges for Israel.
3c 4A 10
12
2 And the name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah,
judging in Beer-Sheva.
3e 4C 17
6
3 And his children did not walk in his ways, and they bent after extortion,
and took bribes and bent judgment.
3e 4C 18
9
4 And all the elders of Israel collected themselves,
and they came to Samuel towards Ramah.
3e 4B 10
11
5 And they said to him, Behold, you are old, and your children do not walk in your ways.
Now set up for us a king to judge us like all the nations.
3d 4B 23
17
6 And the matter was irritating in the eyes of Samuel that they said, Give us a king to judge us.
And Samuel prayed to Yahweh.
3e 4C 27
10
7 And Yahweh said to Samuel, Hear with the voice of the people, to all that they say to you,
because you, they do not refuse, but me, they refuse, from reigning over them,
3e 4C 24
17
8 According to all the deeds that they have done from the day that I brought them up from Egypt and till this day. And they have forsaken me, and they have served other gods.
So they are doing also to you.
3d 4C 42
7
9 So now hear with their voice,
but continue to witness in them, and make clear to them the framework of the king that will reign over them.
3e 4C 8
25
10 And Samuel indicated all the words of Yahweh,
to the people who were asking him for a king.
3e 4B 12
11
11 And he said, This is the framework of the king that will reign over you.
Your sons he will take, and set them for himself, for his chariots, and his cavaliers, and his racers before his chariots.
3e 4B 18
25
12 And he will set up for himself chiefs of thousands and chiefs of fifties,
to plough his ploughing and to reap his harvest, and to make instruments for battle and instruments for his chariot.
3e 4C 15
26
13 And your daughters he will take,
as perfumers and as slaughterers and as bakers.
3e 4A 8
11
14 And your fields, and your vineyards, and your best olive groves, he will take,
and will give to his servants.
3c 4A 20
7
15 And your seed and your vineyards, a tenth,
and will give to his eunuchs and to his servants.
3e 4A 10
12
16 And your servants, and your handmaids, and your prime youth, the best, and your asses, he will take,
and make them do his affairs.
3c 4A 28
7
17 Your flocks, a tenth,
and you will be to him as servants.
3e 4A 4
9
18 And you will appeal in that day before your sovereigns which you have chosen for yourselves,
and Yahweh will not answer you in that day.
3c 4B 20
12
19 But the people would not hear with the voice of Samuel,
and they said, No, but rather a king will be over us.
3e 4B 14
13
20 Then we ourselves will become also like all the nations,
and our king will judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.
3e 4C 13
23
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people,
and spoke them in the ears of Yahweh.
3e 4B 12
8
22 And Yahweh said to Samuel, Hear with their voice and make a king reign for them,
and Samuel said to the men of Israel, Go each to his city.
