Deuteronomy 22

The last chapter of Deuteronomy. The last chapter of Torah. These legal sections appear to me to be an awkward use of the language. I feel as if I am in a strange land. Yet there are moments of tenderness. These rules may be the underpinning for some cultures attitudes to women. How do we deal with this when there is no male and female (Galatians)?

Here we see גבר unambiguously used for designating a man in distinction from a woman. This is the first time I have seen this almost forced on me, though it might have been convenient at other times. With this stem I have always be able to qualify it with a variation on valour/valiant.  I have allowed man/men with other stems. (אישׁ and מת). Verse 5 surely puts this prohibition in the context of the time. A time of forcefulness. Not that such is foreign to us.

Verse 9, כלא doubly confined, as in Leviticus 19:19. The dominant gloss for the root is restrain, occasionally holding-pen or fold. There are idiomatic uses of some words like ברך bless and קדשׁ holy where the intent is the opposite, curse ארר or defiled טמא. I don't translate these (e.g. here and in Job 1-2). It's up to the reader to decide on what the text says to them, not the translator.

Genesis 34

The last chapter of Genesis to be read. I wonder why this one is the last? Its percentage guessed was 47% rather lower than the others. The reason for this may be simply a few words that were the wrong stem from my initial algorithm for guessing the stem from the word. Three errors, שכם can be backside, or rise up early or a name, Shechem (Shekem). חמר if it has the mater ו will be the name Hamor (Xamor) or without a vav will be ass. And אתה could be the stand alone pronoun, you, or could be a particle with a third person feminine pronoun (more rare), i.e. her. Fixing these brought the chapter up to 49% guessed. Not much difference.

Curious to me that נער (lad, lass) is marked as feminine only by vowels. My algorithms ignored vowels so it would have missed the feminine.

Verse 7. The working of outrage and insult can be read in to the text. שׁכב, lie down is rendered as rape שׁגל by JB. Certainly possible, but definitely interpretive. The whole problem is that interpretation determines thoughts and behaviour of those who read the text. And while I do think this is disgraceful and bad behaviour, I have to struggle with what is said, not what I think. The risk of overkill in my spirit is very high.

Nehemiah 10

As of this point, there remain no more than one chapter for each book not yet read. There are 14 chapters left to read, 2 in Torah, 5 in the former prophets, 2 in the prophets, and 5 in the remainder of the writings, an interesting accident.

As I complete each book, I will put it into a pdf form in English only for reading and correction by whoever would like to read. There is a comment ability, though I haven't used it. But comments can be left on individual posts also. If anyone is interested.

The last verses of this chapter seem a very thorough summary of the religious structures of the rebuilt temple and the land.

Psalms 34

No available performance of this music. If you do one, please let me know.

Psalm 34 is one of 13 alphabetic acrostics in the Hebrew Bible. All 8 of these poems in the Psalms celebrate the preceding psalm. Four of the 8 are in Book 1 and are all incomplete or defective with respect to the letter sequence. The remaining 4 (all complete) are in Book 5, reinforcing the sandwich structure of the Psalter as a whole. This thesis is a consequence of my reading of recurring words in the Psalms as described in my book Seeing the Psalter. Four are in Lamentations, chapters 1 to 4, all complete, with peh and ayin in reverse order, to underline the reversal of fortune that is Israel. The last is in Chapter 31 of Proverbs, verses 10 to 31. It is part of the envelope for the Proverbs, a celebration of wisdom.

Ezra 8

Verse 22 reveals more of the theological and the political frame of the times. Theology in the Bible: what is God / Yahweh said to do? What are the humans doing? Who is saying what God / Yahweh does? Does this change over the times? Lots of questions. First task: read the text. Second task, correct your impressions, traditions, prejudices, etc. A significant task that is somewhat without end.

22 B For I was ashamed to request a force from the king, or cavaliers to help us from an enemy on the journey,
