Numbers 6

It strikes me that there are many categories of instruction, far more than the moral and the ceremonial. Even in our own culture we have regulations, policies, rules, written and unwritten, conventions, traditions, and also laws of many different types. We don't think of law as instruction, but it is also that. Torah comes from a word meaning throw, cast or shoot. The net could be cast quite wide for a set of things for which Torah is used in Scripture. It's not all 'law' in the sense of legal or ethical.

The first part of Numbers 6 seems very like the orderly regulations of a procedure manual. I suspect too some technical terms that may have to change from this first foray these regulations about Nazirites (נזר nzr).

At the end of these regulations is the priestly prayer, one of the more famous passages of Tanach, a prayer that may be reflected in Psalm 67 as shown in the following table. Verse 2 of Psalm 67 uses four of the words of the blessing. The table also highlights the frame of Psalm 67, the keyword, bless, that begins and ends it.

The blessing has no rest mid-verse, no atenach.

Numbers 6
1 And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
2 Speak to the children of Israel and say to them,
A man or a woman that sets itself apart to vow a vow of a Nazirite for consecration for Yahweh,
3 will refrain from wine and strong drink and will not imbibe wine-vinegar or vinegar from strong drink,
and every byproduct of grapes it will not imbibe whether of fresh grape or dry, it will not eat.
4 All the days of its consecration
from all that is made from the vine of wine, from core to husk, it will not eat.
5 All the days of the vow of its consecration no razor will traverse on its head,
until are fulfilled the days in which it will consecrate self to Yahweh, and become holy and neglect the growing of the hair on its head.
6 All the days of its consecration to Yahweh,
to a being that is dead it will not come.
7 Of its father's or its mother's, of its brother's or of its sister's, it will not make itself unclean for them when they die,
for the consecration of its God is on its head.
8 All the days of its consecration,
holy it is for Yahweh.
9 But when one dies a sudden death about it suddenly, and makes unclean the head of its consecration,
then it will shave its head on the day of its cleansing. On the seventh day, it will shave it.
10 And on the eighth day, it will bring two turtledoves or two squab of a dove,
to the priest, to the door of the tent of engagement.
11 And the priest will make one a sin offering and one a burnt offering and cover over for it, that it sinned over the being,
and it will hallow its head on that day.
12 And it will consecrate to Yahweh the days of its consecration, and bring a young yearling he-lamb for a guilt offering
but the former days, let them fall, for its consecration is unclean.
13 And this is the instruction for a Nazirite.
On the day of fulfillment of the days of its consecration, it is to be brought to the door of the tent of engagement.
14 And it will bring near an oblation for Yahweh, one young he-lamb yearling, complete, for a burnt offering,
and one young she-lamb yearling, complete, for a sin offering, and one ram, complete, for peace offerings,
15 a woven pannier of unleavened bread, fine flour cakes mingled with oil, and wafers of unleavened bread anointed with oil,
and their gifts and their libations.
16 And the priest will bring near to the presence of Yahweh,
and will make its sin offering and its burnt offering,
17 And the ram he will make an offering of peace offerings to Yahweh on the woven pannier of unleavened bread,
and the priest will do its gifts and its libations.
18 Then the Nazirite will shave, at the door of the tent of engagement, the head of its consecration,
and take and give the hair of the head of its consecration to the fire that is under the offering of the peace offerings.
19 And the priest will take the boiled arm from the ram and one cake of unleavened bread from the woven pannier and one wafer of unleavened bread,
he will give onto the palms of the Nazirite, after its consecration is shaved.
20 And the priest will elevate them a wave offering in the presence of Yahweh. It is holy for the priest over the torso of the wave offering and over the leg of the wave offering.
And after, a Nazirite may imbibe wine.
21 This is the instruction for a Nazirite who has vowed its oblation for Yahweh per its consecration besides what its hand will realize,
According to the mandate of its vow that it vowed, so it does, per the instruction for its consecration.
22 And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
23 Speak to Aaron and his children, saying, Thus they will bless the children of Israel,
saying to them:
24 Yahweh bless you and keep you.
25 Yahweh shine the light of his face to you and be gracious to you.
26 Yahweh lift up his face to you and set peace in place for you.
27 And they will set in place my name over the children of Israel,
and I, myself, will bless them.
