1 Samuel 17

I worked with this and the music 6 months ago but I hadn't completed the chapter - so here is the whole chapter.

Can children understand politics and power? I really doubt that this chapter should be presented to children on flannel board. My God give them deaf ears. For these stories are unsuitable for children.

Many will fall into the error that Eliab points out, schadenfreude. But I must admit, it is a better story and a better song than I ever imagined from the flannel boards.

I chose a new gloss for אנושׁ, soldier. Thoughts? Soldiers are mortals (mortal is my usual gloss). And man is not suitable. One day I will publish my English Hebrew Hebrew English glossary for the 300,000+ words in the corpus. d.v.

Sunny days...

1 Samuel 17 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And the Philistines gathered their armies to war and they gathered at Sokoh, that of Judah,
and they encamped between Sokoh and Azeiqah at the Bloody-end.
3d 4C 27
17
2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered and encamped in the valley of Eilah,
and were arranged for battle at the call of the Philistines.
3e 4C 21
12
3 Philistines were standing on the hill from this point of view and Israel was standing on the hill from this point of view,
and a gorge between them.
3d 4C 21
6
4 And a man came forth between them out of the Philistine camps, Goliath his name, of Gath.
His stature was six cubits and a span.
3e 4C 20
8
5 C A helmet of brass on his head, he was clothed with scaled chain mail.
And the weight of the chain mail was five thousand shekels of brass.
3e 4C 18
18
6 And he had spats of brass for his feet,
and a buckler of brass between his shoulders.
3e 4A 9
10
7 And the timber of his spear was like a weaver's beam. The point of his spear was six hundred shekels of iron,
and one bearing the grappling hook walked before him.
3e 4B 24
11
8 And he stood and he called to the ranks of Israel and said to them, Why do you come out to arrange for battle?
Am I not the Philistine and you servants of Saul? Pick your eligible man and let him come down to me.
3c 4B 29
26
9 If he is able to fight with me and he strikes me, then we will become your servants.
And if I myself devour him, and I strike him, then you will become ours as servants and serve us.
3e 4C 23
27
10 And the Philistine said, I myself reproach the ranks of Israel this day.
Give me a man that we may fight together.
3d 4B 22
11
11 And Saul heard and all Israel these words of the Philistine,
and they were dismayed and much afraid.
3e 4C 19
9
12 But David, son of an Ephrathite man, this one from Bethlehem of Judah, and his name was Jesse, and he had eight children,
and the man, in the days of Saul, was old as it comes to soldiers.
3e 4B 28
14
13 And the three grown-up children of Jesse went. They went after Saul to war.
And the names of his three children who went into the battle were Eliab, the firstborn, second to him, Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
3e 4C 22
34
14 But David, he was the youngest,
so the three grown-ups went after Saul.
3e 4B 7
13
15 And David went and returned from Saul,
to shepherd his father's sheep at Bethlehem.
3d 4B 11
9
16 And the Philistine made overture the early morning and the evening,
and presented himself forty days.
3e 4B 12
8
17 And Jesse said to David his son, Take please to your brothers this ephah of parched grain and these ten loaves of bread,
and race to the camp for your brothers.
3e 4C 31
11
18 ~ And these ten sharp cheeses you bring to the chief of the thousand.
And your brothers visit in peace and their surety take.
3e 4C 21
18
19 And Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the valley of Eilah,
in battle with the Philistines.
3e 4C 18
7
20 And David rose up early in the morning and he abandoned the flock with a keeper, and he bore and went as Jesse had commanded.
And he came to the trench as the force was going out toward the ranks and raising a shout in the battle.
3e 4C 31
28
21 For Israel and the Philistines had ranked,
rank calling rank.
3e 4C 20
22 So David abandoned the cargo from himself into the hand of the keeper of the cargo,
and raced toward the ranks and he came and he inquired of his brothers in peace.
3e 4B 27
12
23 B And he was speaking with them and behold the man came up, Goliath the Philistine, his name, of Gath, from between the Philistine ranks, and he spoke according to these words.
And David heard.
3e 4C 41
5
24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man,
withdrew from before his face and they feared much.
3e 4B 12
12
25 And the men of Israel said: Have you seen this man that has come up? For to reproach Israel, he comes up.
And it will be that the man who strikes him, the king will enrich him with great riches and will give him his daughter, and make the house of his father free in Israel.
3d 4C 27
42
26 And said David to the soldiers standing with him, saying, What will be done for someone that strikes this Philistine and turns aside reproach from Israel?
For who is this fore-skinned Philistine that he should reproach the ranks of the living God?
3e 4C 43
21
27 And the people said to him a word like this, saying,
Thus it will be done for someone that strikes him.
3e 4C 13
11
28 And Eliab, his older brother, heard when he spoke to the soldiers.
And the anger of Eliab burned against David, and he said, What's this that you came down? And to whom did you abandon those few sheep in the wilderness? Myself, I know your presumption and the evil of your heart, that for the sake of seeing the battle, you came down.
3c 4C 19
65
29 And David said, What have I done now?
Is it not a word?
3e 4B 11
5
30 And he circled from next to him to be in the forefront of another and said a word like this.
And the people returned a word like the word at the beginning.
3e 4C 18
14
31 And the words that David spoke were heard,
and they were made clear in the presence of Saul and he laid hold of him.
3e 4B 12
12
32 And David said to Saul, let no human heart miscarry over him.
Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
3e 4C 16
14
33 And Saul said to David, You cannot go to this Philistine to fight with him,
for a youth are you and he a man of war from his youth. S
3d 4C 26
13
34 And David said to Saul, Your servant is a shepherd of his father's sheep,
and the lion came or the bear and bore away a lamb from the troop,
3c 4C 20
17
35 then I go out after it and I strike it and I deliver from its mouth.
And if it arises against me then I am resolute with its beard and I strike it and I render it lifeless.
3c 4B 17
21

36 c Even the lion even the bear your servant will strike,
so this fore-skinned Philistine will be as one with them for he has reproached the ranks of the living God. S
3c 4C 13
27
37 And David said, Yahweh who delivered me from the hand of the lion or the hand of the bear he, he will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.
And Saul said to David, Go and Yahweh will be with you.
3e 4C 35
15

38 And Saul clothed David with his armour and gave a helmet of brass for his head,
and he clothed him with chain mail.
3d 4C 21
7
39 And David wore his sword over his armour and he made an attempt to walk for he had not tried it out. And David said to Saul, I am not able to walk in these that I have not tried out,
and David put them aside from him.
3d 4B 44

40 And he took his stick in his hand and he chose his five smooth stones from the wadi and he set them in the shepherds' inner pouch that was his and in picking up with his sling in his hand,
he made overture to the Philistine.
3c 4B 47

41 And the Philistine walked, walking with intent for close combat, to David,
and the person bearing the grappling hook before him.
3d 4A 14
11

42 And the Philistine took note and saw David, and he despised him,
for he was a youth, and ruddy, and beautiful in appearance.
3c 4B 16
13

45 And David said to the Philistine, You come to me with sword and spear and scale,
but I come to you in the name of Yahweh of hosts, the God of the ranks of Israel whom you have reproached.

48 And it happened that the Philistine arose and he came on and he approached the convergence with David,
and David raced impetuously towards the ranks to converge with the Philistine.

49 And David reached his hand into the inner pouch, and he took from there a stone, and he slung it, and struck the Philistine in his forehead, and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell onto his face earthward. 3e 4C 31

50 So David was resolute over the Philistine with sling and stone and he struck the Philistine and rendered him lifeless,
and there was no sword in David's hand.

And when the Philistines saw their valiant one was dead, they withdrew.

And the head of the Philistine was in his hand.
