2 Chronicles 12

2 Chronicles 12:9-12 and 1 Kings 14:25-29 share 116 or their 139 words, 21 stems in sequence of which several are repeated multiple times. (I could show you the table, but it is pretty obvious without it.) Clearly one is copied from the other in a slightly different context. Whenever I do a chapter of Genesis to Kings, it is often that some part of Chronicles is translated quite accurately by my automated routine.

The differing words also stand out. And fortunately even some of the obscure names are caught. The routine works with up to six consecutive words at a time and also resolves the domain and subdomain at the same time. Saves lots of hunting and pecking.

I will have to slow down in December so I am rushing ahead now. Maybe I will schedule some at some point for the holidays. But maybe not... I can actually reach my home computer with the database from anywhere in the world, so I may dip my toes into translation rather than snorkeling in the south Pacific (but it's not likely - too many babies to care for and play with on the beach).

And even if I don't finish this project, there is enough of it done that it could be continued by someone else if it is at all worth while.

So here's the Chronicler. Notice that Yahweh through his prophet is not taken in by the people being subdued or bringing themselves to heel (same Hebrew כנע - also the word for Caanan - that's curious).  But it's a start in the right direction so Yahweh gives confirming hints that this is the way to go. But you know about people being able to take a hint...

I am curious also as to why Rehoboam is coupled with 'all Israel'. R. ruled in the South (Judah) and not in the north (Israel). It is early days in the divided kingdoms, so may there's the excuse for still using Israel to refer to all the land.

2 Chronicles 12 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And it happened when Rehoboam had established the kingdom and had encouraged himself, he forsook the instruction of Yahweh,
and all Israel with him.

2 And it happened in year the fifth of king Rehoboam, Shishaq the king of Egypt came up to Jerusalem,
for they had trespassed against Yahweh.

3 With a thousand two hundred chariot, and sixty thousand cavalry,
and there was no count of the people that came with him from Egypt, Lubite, Sukite, and Cushite.

4 And he conquered the fortified cities that were of Judah,
and he came to Jerusalem.

5 And Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the chiefs of Judah that were gathered at Jerusalem in the face of Shishaq.
And he said to them, Thus says Yahweh, You yourselves have forsaken me and also I myself have forsaken you into the hand of Shishaq.

6 And they were brought to heel, the chiefs of Israel and the king,
and they said, Yahweh is righteous.

7 And when Yahweh saw that they were brought to heel, the word of Yahweh happened to Shemaiah, saying, they have subdued themselves. I will not destroy them,
and I will give them at least a hint of security, and my heat will not be poured forth in Jerusalem by the hand of Shishaq.

and they will know my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the lands.

9 So Shishaq the king of Egypt came up to Jerusalem and he took the treasuries of the house of Yahweh and the treasuries of the house of the king. He took it all.
And he took the golden shields which Solomon had made.

10 And Rehoboam the king made in their stead shields of brass,
and entrusted them to the hand of the chiefs of the racers, the keepers of the door of the house of the king.

19
11 And it happened often. The king went into the house of Yahweh.
The racers went in and bore them and the racers returned them to the little chamber.

12 And when he subdued himself, the anger of Yahweh turned from him and did not destroy to consume.
And moreover in Judah things were good.
3e 4C 19
12
13 And the king Rehoboam was encouraged in Jerusalem and reigned.
As a child of forty one years, Rehoboam began to reign, and seventeen years he reigned in Jerusalem, the city which Yahweh chose to put his name there, out of all the sceptres of Israel. And the name of his mother was Naamah, an Ammonite.

14 And he did evil,
for he did not prepare his heart to search out Yahweh.

11
15 And the words of Rehoboam, the former and the latter, are they not written in the words of Shemaiah the prophet, and of Iddo the visionary of genealogies?
And there were wars, Rehoboam and Jeroboam, all these days.
3c 4B 41
15
16 And Rehoboam was laid out with his ancestors and was entombed in the city of David,
and Abijah his son reigned in his stead.
