1 Samuel 1

The first three chapters of Samuel are among my favorites. Hannah is a powerful character and her determination in prayer a lovely antidote to her hardness and inward turning at the instigation of her rival wife. Chapter 2 anticipates Mary's Magnificat, and chapter 3 illustrates the consequences when spiritual power goes wrong and is judged.

1 Samuel 1 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And there was one man from the exalted lookout of Mount Ephraim,
and his name was Elkanah, child of Jeroham, child of Elihu, child of Tohu, child of Zuph, an Ephrathite.

21
2 And he had two wives. The name of one Hannah and the name of the second, Peninnah.
And Peninnah had succession, but Hannah had no succession.

15
3 And that man used to go up from his city regularly to worship and to offer to Yahweh of hosts in Shiloh.
And there, the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phineas, were priests of Yahweh.

17
4 And it was the day Elkanah was offering,
and he gave portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and her daughters,

19
5 And to Hannah he gave one double-sized portion,
for he loved Hannah but Yahweh had placed a bar on her womb.
3d 4C 12
12
6 And her adversary grieved her also, such grief as to make her thunderous,
because Yahweh had placed a bar about her womb.
3e 4C 17
8
7 And so he did year in year out. As often as she came up to the house of Yahweh, so she grieved her,
and she wept and did not eat.
3e 4C 24
7
8 And Elkanah her man said to her, Hannah, why do you weep, and why do you not eat, and why is your heart hurting?
Am I not better to you than ten children?
3e 4C 29
13
9 And Hannah arose after she had eaten in Shiloh and after she had imbibed,
and Eli the priest sat on the throne over the posts of the temple of Yahweh.
3d 4B 19
20
10 But she was provoked of being,
and she prayed to Yahweh and weeping she wept.
3e 4B 6
12
11 And she vowed a vow and she said, Yahweh of hosts, if seeing, you see, into the poverty of your maidservant and remember me and do not forget your maidservant and you give to your maidservant a seed of men,
then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and and alteration not will come up on his head.
3e 4C 51
19
12 And it happened that she prayed to excess in the presence of Yahweh,
and Eli was watching her mouth.
3e 4B 15
8
13 And she, Hannah, was speaking in her heart, but her lips were wavering to and fro and her voice was not heard,
so Eli reckoned she was intoxicated.
3e 4C 26
11
14 And Eli said to her, How long will you be intoxicated?
Put aside your wine from you.
3e 4C 15
10
15 And Hannah answered and she said, No, my lord, a woman of a hardened spirit am I. Neither wine nor strong drink have I imbibed,
but I have poured out my being in the presence of Yahweh.
3e 4C 30
10
16 Do not take your maidservant as the face of a daughter of worthlessness,
for out of the abundance of my blathering and grief I have spoken till now.
3d 4B 14
13
17 And Eli answered and said, Go in peace,
and the God of Israel grant your request that you have asked with him.
3c 4B 13
20
18 And she said, May your handmaid find grace in your eyes.
And the woman went on her way and she ate, and her face was no longer for herself.
3c 4C 13
20
19 And they rose up early in the morning and worshiped in the presence of Yahweh and returned, and they came to their house towards Ramah.
And Elkanah knew Hannah, his wife, and Yahweh remembered her.
3d 4C 30
18
20 And it happened in due course of the days after Hannah became pregnant, that she gave birth to a son,
and she called his name Samuel, for she had requested him from Yahweh.
3e 4C 17
16
21 And the man Elkanah would go up, and all his house,
to offer to Yahweh an offering regularly, and his vow.
3c 4A 12
15
22 And Hannah did not come up,
for she said to her man, Till the lad is weaned. Then I will bring him so he may appear before Yahweh and settle there for evermore.
3e 4C 7
34
23 And Elkanah her man said to her, Do what is good in your eyes. Settle till you have weaned him. Surely Yahweh will uphold his word.
And the woman settled and her son suckled, till she had weaned him.
3c 4C 33
17
24 And she brought him up with her when she had weaned him, with three young bulls and one ephah of flour and a skin-bottle of wine, and she brought him to the house of Yahweh in Shiloh.
And the lad was a youth.
3e 4C 40
6
25 And they butchered the young bull,
and they brought the lad to Eli.
3e 4A 7
11
26 And she said, O my lord, as lives your being, my lord,
I am the woman that took her stand with you in this, praying to Yahweh.
3e 4C 14
20
27 For this lad I prayed,
and Yahweh has given to me my request that I asked from him.
3e 4B 10
19
28 And furthermore I, myself, put him forward for Yahweh. All the days that are his, he is put forward for Yahweh.
And he worshiped Yahweh there.
