Isaiah 51

This chapter underlines the role of Israel in the fulfillment of the purposes of God. True to the Christian, Jesus is this vine, but the vine is not without branches who suffer with it. And, more to the point who drink that heated cup. Notice the role of submission to evil noted in the last verse.

Nonetheless, it seems difficult for anyone to assume joy and mirth. (Though I admit to enjoying Jerusalem while we were there and pondering the memory of its conflicts afterwards.)

1 Hear me pursuers of righteousness, seekers of Yahweh,
Take note to the rock from which you are hewn and to the drilled pit from which you were quarried.
3d 4B 13
17
2 Take note of Abraham your father and of Sarah who endured your birth,
for as one I called him and I blessed him and I increased him.
3e 4B 18
14
3 For Yahweh has comforted Zion. He has comforted all her deserts, and he sets her wilderness as Eden, and her steppes as the garden of Yahweh.
Joy and mirth will be found in her, thanksgiving and the voice of a psalm.

4 Attend to me, my people, and my tribes, to me listen,
for instruction from me will go forth, and my judgment for the light of peoples, I will bring in a moment.
3e 4C 16
19
5 Near is my righteousness. My salvation comes forth, and my arm will judge peoples.
On me coasts will wait, and on my arm they will hope.

6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens and take note of the earth beneath, for the heavens as smoke will be dissipated, and the earth like a garment will wear out, and her inhabitants like a gnat will die,
but my salvation will be forever and my righteousness will not be dismayed.

16
7 Hear me, you who know righteousness, the people with my instruction in their heart.
Do not fear the reproach of a mortal, and from their revilings, do not be dismayed.
3e 4C 15
17
8 C For like a garment, a moth will eat them up, and like wool, a louse will eat them,
but my righteousness will be forever, and my salvation to the generation of generations.

9 Be roused, be roused, be clothed with strength, O arm of Yahweh. Be roused as in the days of antiquity, the generations of eras past.
Is it not the same as the hewing of Rahab or whistling for a dragon?
3d 4C 23
16
10 Is it not as making a desert of the sea, the water of an exceeding abyss,
the setting of the deeps of the sea as a way the redeemed will pass through.
3e 4C 15
16
11 And the ransomed of Yahweh will return and enter Zion with a shout of joy and everlasting gladness over their heads.
Joy and mirth they will overtake. Sadness and sighing will withdraw.

12 I, I am he that comforts you.
Who are you that you should fear from a mortal that will die, or from humanity made as grass?
3c 4C 11

13 And do you forget Yahweh your maker, bending the heavens, and founding earth, dreading continually all the day long in the presence of the heat of distress, as if it were prepared to destroy,
and where is the heat of the distress?
3e 4B 40

14 Swiftly the stooped is loosed,
and he will not die to destruction, and his bread will not be lacking.
3e 4B 9
12
15 But I am Yahweh your God. Uneasy is the sea and its waves murmur.
Yahweh of hosts is his name.

16 And I have put my words in your mouth, and in the shadow of my hand I have covered you,
to plant the heavens and to lay the foundation of earth and to say to Zion, My people you are.
3e 4C 17
19
17 Be roused, be roused, arise O Jerusalem, who have imbibed from the hand of Yahweh the cup of his heat,
the lees of the cup of staggering, you have imbibed, pressed out.
3c 4C 25
13
18 There is none to refresh her from all the children she has begotten,
and there is none to encourage in her hand, from all the children she has reared.
3e 4C 12
15
19 Twice, behold, I call to you. Who will condole you?
The devastation and the brokenness and the famine and the sword, by whom will I comfort you?
3c 4C 12
19
20 Your children languish. They lie down at the head of all the streets, as an antelope in fever,
filled with the heat of Yahweh, the rebuke of your God.
3d 4B 16
14
21 Therefore hear, please, this, O afflicted,
and intoxicated, and not from wine.

22 Thus says your Lord Yahweh, and your God that contends with his people, Behold, I have taken from your hand the cup of staggering,
the lees of the cup of my heat. Not again will you imbibe of it any more.
3d 4B 31
15

23 But I will set it into the hand of those who sadden you, who said to your being, Worship so we may pass through.
And you set as the earth your back, and as a street to those who passed through.
