1 Samuel 4

Depart vs deport vs gone or whatever... probably exiled is more suitable. The verb is גלה. Gone is a non-starter. גלה is too specific. It does not fit in with generic words of movement of people or goods. It has the sense also of uncovered or disclosed, but mostly is used in the later narratives of the exile.

I don't pay much attention to textual problems, but verse 1 is missing a chunk in the Hebrew that is in the Greek. By then Eli was very old and his sons still persisted in their wicked behaviour towards Yahweh. It happened at that time that the Philistines mustered to fight Israel and...

JB points this out in notes as does McCarter, ABC p. 103. McCarter gives a reason. The Hebrew copyist skipped from Israel to Israel. It's a possibility.

1 Samuel 4 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And the word of Samuel was for all Israel,
and Israel went out to encounter the Philistines for battle, and they encamped by the Help Stone, and the Philistines encamped in Aphaq [Repression].
3e 4B 12
34
2 And the Philistines were arranged to encounter Israel, but it abandoned the battle, for Israel was plagued in the face of the Philistines,
and they struck of the ranks in the field about four thousand men.

19
3 And the people came to the camp, and the elders of Israel said, Why did Yahweh plague us today in the presence of the Philistines?
Let us lay hold for ourselves from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and when it comes among us then it will save us from the palm of our enemies.
3c 4B 33
32
4 And the people sent to Shiloh to bear from there the ark of the covenant of Yahweh of hosts who sits on the cherubim,
and there were the two sons of Eli with the ark of the covenant of the God, Hophni and Phineas.
3c 4C 27
21
5 And it happened as the ark of the covenant of Yahweh went to the camp, all Israel raised a shout of great jubilation,
and the land was excited.
3e 4C 29
6
6 When the Philistines heard the voice of jubilation, they said, What is this voice of great jubilation in the camp of the Hebrews?
And they knew that the ark of Yahweh had entered the camp.
3c 4C 32
14
7 And the Philistines were fearful, for they said, God has entered the camp.
And they said, Woe to us, for there has not been such as this previously.
3d 4B 18
17
8 B Woe to us. Who will deliver us from the hand of these majestic gods?
These are they, the gods who struck Egypt with every strike in the wilderness.
3c 4B 22
20
9 Be resolute and be soldiers, O Philistines, lest you serve the Hebrews as they served you.
So be soldiers and fight.
3e 4C 26
11
10 And the Philistines fought and Israel was plagued and they withdrew each to his tent, and there was a very great defeat,
and there fell from Israel thirty thousand on foot.
3e 4C 34
14
11 And the ark of God was taken away.
And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phineas, died.
3e 4C 8
12
12 And a man of Benjamin raced from the ranks and came to Shiloh in that day,
and his armour in segments, and debris from the ground on his head.
3e 4C 22
13
13 And he came in. And behold, Eli sat on the throne adjacent to the way on lookout, for his heart was apprehensive over the ark of God,
And the man entered into the city to announce and all the city appealed.
3e 4C 33
15
14 And Eli heard the voice of the outcry, and he said, What is the voice of this tumult?
And the man swiftly came and told Eli.
3d 4C 20
14
15 And Eli was a child of ninety eight years,
and his eyesight was blurred, and he was not able to see.
3e 4B 11
11
16 And the man said to Eli, I have come from the ranks and from the ranks I myself withdrew today.
And he said, What is the word, my child.
3d 4B 32
11
17 And the envoy answered and said, Israel has withdrawn in the face of the Philistines, and furthermore a great plague there has been among the people,
and furthermore two your sons died, Hophni and Phineas, and the ark of the God has been taken.
3d 4C 30
25
18 And it happened when he was remembering the ark of God, that he fell from the throne backward, adjacent to the gate, and his vertebrae was shattered and he died,
for the man was old and heavy, and he judged Israel a forty year span.
3d 4C 48
13
19 And his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phineas, was pregnant ready to give birth, and she heard the message that the ark of God was taken and her husband's father and her man had died,
and she bowed down and she gave birth, for her anguish was overturned upon her.
3e 4B 37
15
20 And about the time of her death, the women standing by spoke to her, Do not fear, for you have given birth to a son,
but she did not answer and she did not set her heart on it.
3e 4B 23
9
21 And she called the lad, Where is Glory? [Ik-kvod] saying, Glory is exiled from Israel,
in that the ark of God was taken, and over her husband's father and her man.
3e 4B 18
18
22 And she said, Glory is exiled from Israel,
for taken away is the ark of God.
