1 Kings 8

There are some exotic and unexpected glosses here to pick up on repeating sounds in the Hebrew. It's too big a chapter to put in much commentary on the music or the recurrence (which is internally substantial.) [Just noticed that 2 Chronicles 6 translated itself as I was doing this. The double review will probably result in a change or two here too.]

I remember being impressed by Solomon's prayer in this chapter some time in the past 20 years or whenever I last read it. But it appears to me now that it was not spoken in Elizabethan English. It is far more hesitant and choppy than consistently grammatical. It is a prayer moving from supplication to negative imprecation, and covering all the bases. There seems also to be a warning. The brass altar is too tiny. I wonder if Solomon oversteps, humanly speaking. He will come in for criticism as well as adulation eventually.

1 Kings 8
1 Then Solomon convened the elders of Israel, all the preeminent of the branches, the principals of the ancestors of the children of Israel to king Solomon of Jerusalem,
to bring up the ark of the covenant of Yahweh from the city of David. This is Zion.
41
18
2 And everyone of Israel congregated to king Solomon in the moon of Ethanim in the festival.
This is the seventh new moon.
26
7
3 And all the elders of Israel came,
and the priests were bearing the ark.
9
11
4 And they brought up the ark of Yahweh and the tent of engagement and all the vessels of the sanctuary that were in the tent.
And the priests and the Levites brought them up.
28
14
5 Then the king Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel engaged with him, were with him before the ark,
offering sheep and oxen that were uncounted and unfathomable for abundance.
27
19
6 And the priests brought the ark of the covenant of Yahweh to its place, to the substance of the house, to the Holy of Holies,
under the wings of the cherubim.
32
8
7 For the cherubim spread their two wings to the place of the ark,
and the Cherubim overshadow the ark and its shafts from above.
15
18
8 And they retracted the shafts, and the tops of the shafts could be seen from the sanctuary above, facing the substance, but they were not seen outside.
And they are there until this day.
34
9
9 There was nothing in the ark but the two tablets of stone that Moses left there in Horeb,
which Yahweh cut with the children of Israel at their going out from the land of Egypt.
24
21
10 And it happened when the priests came out from the sanctuary.
And the cloud filled the house of Yahweh.
12
10
11 And the priests were not able to stand to minister from the presence of the cloud,
for the glory of Yahweh filled the house of Yahweh.
19
10
12 Then Solomon said,
Yahweh is said to dwell in dark turbulence.
6
10
13 To build, I have built a house of residence for you,
established as your seat everlastingly.
9
9
14 And the king turned around, faced, and blessed all the congregation of Israel.
And all the congregation of Israel stood.
19
9
15 And he said, Blessed is Yahweh the God of Israel who spoke with his mouth to David my father,
and with his hand filled, said,
24
7
16 From that day when I brought my people Israel out from Egypt, I did not chose in a city from all the sceptres of Israel to build a house to be My Name Is There,
but I chose in David, to be over my people Israel.
39
14
17 And it was with the heart of David my father,
to build a house to the name of Yahweh the God of Israel.
9
14
18 And Yahweh said to David my father, In that it was with your heart to build a house for my name,
you did well that it was with your heart.
26
12
19 But you, you will not build the house.
In contrast, your son, the one coming forth from your genus, he, he will build the house for my name.
9
20
20 And Yahweh placed his word that he spoke.
And I am placed under David my father and sit on the throne of Israel, as Yahweh spoke and I have built the house to the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel.
13
41
21 And I have set there a place for the ark, where there is the covenant of Yahweh,
which he cut with our ancestors when he brought them out from the land of Egypt.
16
21
22 And Solomon stood before the altar of Yahweh in front of all the congregation of Israel,
and spread his palms to the heavens.
21
9
23 And he said, Yahweh, the God of Israel, there is none like you, O God, in the heavens above or on the earth from beneath,
keeping the covenant and loving-kindness for your servants who walk before you with all their heart,
32
24
24 who kept for your servant, David, my father what you spoke to him,
and you speak with your mouth, and with your hand you fulfill as on this day.
20
16
25 And now Yahweh, the God of Israel, keep for your servant, David, my father what you spoke to him, saying, There will not be cut off for you, a man from my presence to sit on the throne of Israel,
solely if your children will keep their way to walk in my presence as you have walked in my presence.
47
26
26 And now, O God of Israel,
let please your words be verified that you spoke for your servant David my father.
9
20
27 For is it in verity, God sits on the earth?
Behold, the heavens and the heaven of the heavens, do not abide you. How much less this house which I have built.
13
27
28 And face the prayer of your servant and his supplication, Yahweh, my God,
to hear the joyful cry and the prayer that your servant prays to your face today,
22
26
29 to let your eyes be open to this house night and day, to the place where you said, My name will be there,
to hear the prayer that your servant will pray to this place.
32
21
30 Then hear the supplication of your servant and your people Israel who pray to this place,
and you, you hear to the place of your seat, to the heavens. Then hear and forgive.
28
23
31 When anyone sins against his associate and claims censure against him that causes him to be censured,
and censure comes before your altar in this house,
22
15
32 then you, you hear, the heavens, and do, and judge your servants to condemn wickedness, to permit his way on his head,
and to justify a righteous one to permit for him according to his righteousness.
34
12
33 When your people Israel are plagued facing an enemy in that they sin against you,
then let them return to you and give thanks to your name, and have them pray and supplicate to you in this house,
19
29
34 then you, you hear, the heavens, and forgive the sin of your people Israel,
and return them to the ground that you gave to their ancestors.
20
19
35 When heaven is contained and there is no rain for they sin against you,
and they pray to this place and give thanks to your name and from their sin they turn, for you afflict them,
17
29
36 then you, you hear, the heavens, and forgive the sin of your servants and your people Israel, that you instruct them in the good way which they should walk in,
and you give rain on your land that you gave to your people for an inheritance.
40
22
37 Famine. For there may be in the earth pestilence, for there may be blight, mildew, locust, caterpillar, for there may be. For his enemy makes him deficient in the land of his gates,
all contagion, all illness,
38
7
38 all prayer, all supplication, that will be, to all humanity, to all your people Israel,
anyone who knows contagion in their heart, and spreads their palms to this house,
24
21
39 then you, you hear, the heavens, the base of your seat, and forgive, and do, and give to each according to all his ways,
whose heart you do know. For you, you know, you only, the heart of all the children of humanity.
40
17
40 So that they may fear you all the days that they live over the face of the ground,
that you gave to our ancestors.
23
10
41 And even to the foreigner who is not of your people Israel such a one,
and he comes from a land far off for the sake of your name.
15
14
42 (for they will hear of your great name and your courageous hand and your stretched out arm),
and he comes and prays to this house,
25
12

43 you, you hear, the heavens, the base of your seat, and do everything the foreigner calls to you
so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name to fear you as your people Israel, and to know that your name is called over this house which I have built.
28
46

44 For your people go forth to war against its enemy in the way that you send them,
and they pray to Yahweh via the city, in her which you have chosen, and the house which I have built for your name,
19
29
45 then hear O heavens, their prayer and their supplication,
and do their judgment.
18
7
46 For they sin against you (for there is no human who not does sin) and you are angry among them and you give them into the presence of an enemy,
and captive, they carry them away to the land of the enemy, far off or near.
26
19
47 And they are turned in their heart in the land where they are captive,
and they turn and supplicate to you in the land of their captivity saying, We have sinned and we are perverse. We are wicked,
15
29
48 then let them return to you with all their heart, and with all their being, in the land of their enemies, who led them away captive,
and pray unto you via their land, which you gave to their ancestors, the city which you have chosen, and the house which I have built for your name.
27
39
49 Then hear, O heavens, the base of your seat, their prayer and their supplication,
and do their judgment.
23
7
50 And forgive your people that have sinned against you and all their transgressions that they have transgressed against you,
and give them compassion for them in the presence of those who carried them away that they may have compassion on them.
22
16
51 For they are your people and your inheritance,
that you brought forth from Egypt from the midst of the iron forge.
9
14
52 To let your eyes be open to the supplication of your servant and to the supplication of your people Israel,
to hear them in all that they call to you.
25
13
53 Because you, you differentiated them, for yourself, for an inheritance from all the peoples of the earth,
as you spoke by the hand of Moses your servant when you brought out our ancestors from Egypt, my Lord Yahweh.
18
31
54 And it happened when Solomon finished praying to Yahweh all this prayer and supplication,
he arose from before the altar of Yahweh from kneeling on his knees and his palms spread to the heavens.
26
24
55 And he stood and he blessed all the congregation of Israel.
A great voice saying,
13
5
56 Blessed is Yahweh who gives rest to his people Israel according to all that he spoke.
Not one word has failed from all his good word that he spoke by the hand of Moses his servant.
23
23
57 Let Yahweh our God be with us as he was with our ancestors.
Let him not forsake us and let him not abandon us,
21
10
58 to bend our hearts to him,
to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments which he commanded our ancestors.
9
30
59 And let these my words that are my supplication be in the presence of Yahweh, near to Yahweh our God, day and night,
to do judgment for his servant and judgment for the people of Israel, a day by day matter.
33
21
60 So that all the peoples of the earth may know that Yahweh, he is 'the God'.
There is nothing else.
19
2
61 And let your heart be at peace with Yahweh our God,
to walk in his statutes and to keep his commandments as on this day.
15
16
62 Then the king and all Israel with him,
offered an offering in the presence of Yahweh.
11
8
63 And Solomon offered an offering of the peace offerings which he offered to Yahweh: oxen, twenty two thousand and sheep, a hundred and twenty thousand,
And the king and all the children of Israel dedicated the house of Yahweh.
35
18
64 On that day the king sanctified the centre of the court that is before the house of Yahweh, for he had done there the burnt offering and the gift and the choicest of the peace offerings,
for the altar of brass that is in the presence of Yahweh was too tiny to abide the burnt offering and the gift and the choicest of the peace offerings.

33
65 And Solomon made at that time festivities, and all Israel with him, a great congregation from the entrance of Hamath to the wadi of Egypt in the presence of Yahweh our God seven days and seven days,
a fourteen day span.

6

66 On the eighth day he dismissed the people and they blessed the king.
And they went to their tents glad and of a good heart over all the good that Yahweh had done for David his servant and for Israel with him.

Because of this chapter, I noted that I had to change a hapax in the Psalms. In psalm 114:1,
I had used the adjective foreign. It is now exotic.

When Israel came out from Egypt,
the house of Jacob from an exotic people,

Foreign and related words I used for נכר. So I cannot use it for a different Hebrew stem. I had missed this error for at least a year. Tch, tch, tch. And error it is by my rules. Egypt should never be put in a negative frame today - and in these days of post-God creeping xenophobia, foreign is in a bad space. In contrast the other, even the place we came from, is immensely attractive and exotic. But exotic will appear only once in Bob's Bible as לעז appears only once in the Hebrew Bible.
