Genesis 44

There are some clues here as to the nature of נפשׁ. Surprised? It is as suspected a very fluid concept. JB has his heart is bound up in him. KJV has his life is bound up in the lad's life. The Hebrew is וְנַפְשׁ֖וֹ קְשׁוּרָ֥ה בְנַפְשֽׁוֹ. Notice that נפשׁ occurs twice in the sentence, soul bound to soul. Neither heart nor life nor lad is in the sentence. Our text frequently leaves us with pronouns that have unresolved antecedents. Who will say which his is his? I was very tempted to allow soul here and then to use it wherever the term is clearly corporate rather than individual. Whatever we may think of personal, our person is created and sustained within our social network. When one dies, we all die.

But I did not use soul - since this reading is read to undermine assumptions about soul, God, punishment, atonement, repentance, and probably a few other things too. There is no paint-by-numbers theology.

The remarkable story of Joseph is unfolding piece by piece. How is it that the brothers could keep such a lie from their father for so long? Soul not bound to soul in this group with integrity.

I really should allow day to be read as time. In the phrase כל הימים, for all time, or something like that. But like soul, and gravity, I don't really know what time is either. The word is too big for me.

Equally, who was over his house, could be chamberlain or a similar office like steward. (I used that gloss somewhere else, e.g. Genesis 15:2.) People will read a lot into steward, and it is not in the text.

1 And he commanded who was over his house, saying, Fill the satchels of the men with food, as they would be able to bear,
and set the silver of each in the mouth of his satchel.

2 And my mug, the silver mug, you will put in the mouth of the satchel of the youngest, and the money for his crushed corn.
And he did according to the word of Joseph that he had spoken.

and the men were sent away, they and their asses.

4 ~ They were gone out from the city, not distant, and Joseph said to who was over his house, Arise, pursue after the men,
and overtake them and say to them, Why do you repay evil instead of good?

5 Is not this from which my master himself imbibes, and it he uses for augury himself.
You have done evil that you have done.

7 And they said to him, Why does my lord speak these things?
Far be it for your servants to do a thing like this.

8 B Lo, the silver that we found in the mouth of our satchels we returned to you from the land of Canaan,
so why would we steal from the house of your master silver or gold?

15
9 With whom it is found from your servants, let him die,
and moreover we ourselves will be my lord's for servants.

10 And he said, Even now according to your words, so it is.
With whom it is found, he will be my servant, and you will be innocent.
3e 4C 12
20
11 And they each swiftly brought down his satchel earthward,
and they each opened his satchel.
3d 4A 15
8
12 And he investigated. From the greatest he started, and with the least he finished,
and he found the mug in the satchel of Benjamin.
3e 4B 14
15
13 And they ripped their habit,
and each laid the load on his ass, and they returned to the city.
3e 4B 7
16
14 And Judah and his brothers came towards the house of Joseph, and he was yet there,
and they fell before him earthward.
3e 4C 19
8
15 And Joseph said to them, What deed is this that you have done?
Did you not know that someone who is as I am, can do augury.
3c 4C 19
16
16 And Judah said, What will we say to my lord? What will we speak? And how will we justify ourselves?
God has found the iniquity of your servants. Behold us, servants of my lord, both ourselves and also in whose hand the mug was found.
3d 4C 21
38
17 And he said, Far be it from me to do this.
The person in whose hand the mug was found, he himself will be my servant, and you ascend in peace to your father.
3e 4C 11
31
18 And Judah came close to him and he said, O my Lord, let your servant speak, if you will, a word in the ears of my lord, and do not let your anger burn against your servant,
for you are like pharaoh.
3e 4C 40
7
19 My lord asked his servants, saying,
Is there for you a father or a brother?
3e 4B 11
7
20 And we said to my lord, we have an elderly father and a boy of his old age, the youngest.
And his brother died and he alone is left of his mother and his father loves him.
3c 4B 21
21
21 And you said to your servants, Bring him down to me,
that I may set my eyes on him.
3e 4A 14
8
22 And we said to my lord, The lad can not forsake his father.
If he forsakes his father, he will die.
3e 4B 18
8
23 And you said to your servants, If your youngest brother will not come down,
you yourselves are not again to appear before me.
3d 4A 20
8
24 And it was when we came up to your servant, my father,
we told him the words of my lord.
3e 4B 12
10
25 And our father said,
Return for crushed corn for us, a little food.
3e 4A 6
9
26 And we said, We are not able to go down.
If there is our youngest brother with us, then we will go down. For we are not able to see the face of the person, if our youngest brother is not with us.
3e 4C 9
37
27 And your servant my father said to us,
You know that my wife gave birth to two for me.
3d 4B 11
13
28 And the first went forth from me, and I said, Surely he is torn, torn to pieces,
and I have not seen him even till now.
3e 4C 17
8
29 And you will take even this. And if out of my presence harm befalls him,
then you would bring down my grey hairs in dejection to Sheol.
3c 4B 16
14
30 So now when I come to your servant my father and the lad is not with us,
(for his integrity is fastened in his integrity),
3e 4B 22
9
31 And it will happen when he sees that the lad is not, he will die,
and your servants will bring down the grey hairs of your servant our father in sadness to Sheol.
3d 4A 13
23
32 C For your servant gave surety for the lad with my father, saying,
If I do not bring him to you, then my sin is to my father every day.
3e 4C 16
20
33 So now let your servant sit if you will instead of the lad, servant to my lord,
and let the lad go up with his brothers.
3e 4C 19
9
34 For how will I ascend to my father and the lad is not with me,
lest I would see the evil that will find my father?
