Isaiah 41

Verses 6 and 7 are called an interpolation in the JB notes. They seem to be referring to specific work within the industrial or construction trades. Nails spelled סמר rather than שׂמר.  But interpolation or not, perhaps it is a glimpse into a side room where people help each other, an alternative universe, where people in response to God, do not hurt each other or build up massive walls of self-protection.

Verse 19, supposed to be a good tree - I have taken שׁוט as acacia שׁטה rather than scourge שׁטט.

Verse 28,  if I asked them. Reading vav as if in this case seems a forced move but certainly not an impossible one. The response to the asking is problematical if one thinks that idols are the subject. Idols could not be definition return anything like 'a word'. Fortunately דבר as pestilence is to hand. A suitable response from some foreign powers.

Numbers 18

Verse 1 betrays a very deep understanding of sin and its cost. Regardless of what one thinks of priesthood, the responsibility is not a light one.

In verse 14 is that word חרם (xerem) that everyone complains about as being too violent. (As if anything could be more violent than the god of this present age!) Here it is in this chapter in a cultic context. All that is under the ban in Israel is for the priests. But we don't say חרם as under the ban or to be utterly destroyed in this context. Yet we should, for it was all given to Yahweh and this is effectively to render it not consumable by humans since it is destroyed in the consuming fire. But the priests get it as their provender for their families even though it is banned חרם. This should help explain (if we must) something of the חרם when it is applied to utter destruction of a town or a people. What is banned belongs to Yahweh. Perhaps we should read devoted there too.

Violence can easily be justified by human beings if God is seen as violent. This God is a consuming fire, but the trajectory of the will of this One who is, who was, and who is to come, or who-is-becoming-what-it-is-becoming is kindness, not violence. Faith that claims a foundation from the Hebrew scriptures and believes in building walls or hardening soft targets is a disobedient faith. It violates the vulnerability of the suffering servant. It counts God's self-giving as worth nothing. It is an operational atheism.

Does this also affect me? Yes. I live in a privileged place among a privileged people. We should beware of letting our privilege become entitlement to be defended at all costs. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. (To quote another old writer.)

The idolatry of possessions is part of this chapter. A tithe received is already taxed, right? No, they too are subject to tithe. It may not be the rule of a tithe today, but just think of the power to be wielded by good gifts when the call goes out for help (whether we get a tax receipt or not).

20 And Yahweh said to Aaron, In their land you will not inherit and there is no share for you among them.
I am your share and your inheritance among the children of Israel.
3e 4C 26
17
21 And to the children of Levi, behold, I have given all the tithe in Israel as inheritance,
renewal for their service that they are serving, the service of the tent of engagement.
3d 4C 22
19
22 So the children of Israel will not approach any more to the tent of engagement,
to bear sin, to die.
3d 4B 16
5
23 And the Levite, he will serve the service of the tent of engagement, and they, they will bear their iniquity,
a statute forever for your generations. And among the children of Israel they will not inherit an inheritance.
3e 4C 22
23
24 ~ Because the tithe of the children of Israel that they contribute to Yahweh as a contribution, I have given to the Levites as inheritance.
Therefore I said for them among the children of Israel, They will not inherit an inheritance.
3e 4C 29
21
25 And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 3e 3g 10
26 And to the Levites you will speak and say to them, When you take from the children of Israel the tithe that I have given for you from them in your inheritance,
then you will contribute from it a contribution to Yahweh, a tithe from the tithe.
3c 4C 45
21
27 And your contribution will be reckoned for you,
as grain from the threshing-floor, and as the fullness from the wine-vat.
3e 4A 9
15
28 B So you will contribute, even you, a contribution for Yahweh from all your tithes that you will take from the children of Israel,
and you will give from it a contribution for Yahweh to Aaron the priest.
3e 4C 30
19
29 From all your endowments you will contribute every contribution for Yahweh,
from all its choicest, its holiness from it.
3e 4B 16
11
30 And say to them,
When you have contributed its choicest from it, then it will be reckoned for the Levites as income of a threshing-floor and as income of a wine-vat.
3e 4C 7
27
31 And you will eat it in every place, you and your houses,
because a wage it is for you, renewal for your service in the tent of engagement.
3e 4C 15
16
32 And you will not bear sin over it when you have contributed its choicest from it,
and the holy things of the children of Israel you will not profane, and you will not die.

Judges 4

Ch=X. In my transcriptions of names, I am not quite uniform. But the hard H, ח, is sometimes X and sometimes Ch. Both pronounced the same, a heavy h guttural. Names will be subject to automated transcription if I chose to update them later. One could spend a lifetime on them. Transcribing and playing with their sense. Deborah is bee or her word. Baraq is lightning or carbuncle. Jael is a wild goat. Lightning has no problem yielding adornment to the wild goat.  Carbuncle, a little like any aged P, is also cool. Xeber is companion or partner.

Judges 4 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And again the children of Israel did evil in the eyes of Yahweh.
And Ehud died.
3e 4B 19
4
2 And Yahweh sold them by the hand of Jabin, king of Canaan, who reigned in Chatsor.
And the chief of their host was Sisera, and he inhabited Xarosheth of the nations.
3e 4B 22
18
3 And the children of Israel cried out to Yahweh,
for he had nine hundred chariot of iron, and he kept a grip on the children of Israel resolutely twenty years.
3c 4C 12
27
4 And Deborah, a woman, a prophet, the wife of Lapidoth,
she judged Israel at that time.
3d 4B 13
11
5 ~ And she settled under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and the house of God in mount Ephraim,
and to her the children of Israel came up for judgment.
3c 4B 25
15

6 And she sent and she called for Baraq, child of Abinoam from Qedesh Naphtali,
and said to him, Has not Yahweh the God of Israel commanded, Go and draw out by mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men, from the children of Naphtali and from the children of Zebulun.
3e 4C 20
50
7 And I will draw out to you, into the wadi of Kishon, Sisera, chief of the host of Jabin, with his chariot and his tumult.
So I will give him into your hand.
3e 4B 29
8
8 And Baraq said to her, If you go with me, then I will go,
and if you do not go with me, I will not go.
3d 4C 17
10

9 And she said, Going, I will go with you, but the end will not be your adornment over the way that you are going, for into the hand of woman Yahweh will sell Sisera.
And Deborah arose and she went with Baraq toward Qedesh.
3c 4C 41
14
10 And Baraq appealed to Zebulun and Naphtali toward Qedesh, and he went up, at his feet ten thousand men,
and Deborah came up with him.
3e 4C 28
8
11 And Xeber the Kenite had separated himself from the Kenites, from the children of Xobab, brother-in-law of Moses,
and he stretched out his tent to the turpentine tree at Tsaanaim that was by Qedesh.
3e 4C 18
18
12 And they made clear to Sisera,
that Baraq child of Abinoam had gone up mount Tabor.
3d 4A 7
13
13 And Sisera appealed to all his chariot, nine hundred chariot of iron, and all the people that were with him,
from Xarosheth of the nations to the wadi of Kishon.
3e 4C 26
12
14 And Deborah said to Baraq, Arise, for this is the day that Yahweh will give Sisera into your hand. Has not Yahweh gone out before you?
And Baraq descended from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
3c 4C 37
20
15 And Yahweh confused Sisera and all the chariot-horses and all the camp with the edge of the sword in the face of Baraq,
and Sisera descended from the chariot and withdrew on his own feet.
3c 4B 28
17

16 And Baraq pursued after the chariots, and after the army until Xarosheth of the nations, and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword.
There was not one trace left any more.
3e 4C 26
18

17 And Sisera withdrew on his own feet into the tent of Jael, the wife of Xeber the Kenite,
for there was peace between Jabin king of Chatsor, and the house of Xeber the Kenite.
3e 4C 19
18

18 And Jael came out to encounter Sisera, and said to him, Turn aside my lord. Turn aside to me. Do not fear.
And he turned aside to her towards the tent, and she covered him with a rug.
3c 4C 26
17

19 And he said to her, Let me drink please a little of the water, for I thirst.
And she opened a bottle of milk and gave him drink and covered him.
3c 4B 16
17

20 And he said to her, Stand at the door of the tent.
And it will be, if anyone comes and asks you and says, Is there any man here? Then you will say, There is none.
3d 4B 13
23

21 And Jael, the wife of Xeber took a tent peg from the tent, and put the drill in her hand, and came to him muffled, and stuck the tent peg into his temple. She put it down into the earth.
And he was unconscious and tired, and he died.
3c 4C 51

22 And behold, Baraq pursued Sisera, and Jael came out from the encounter and she said to him, Come and I will show you the person whom you seek.
And he came to her, and behold, Sisera fallen down dead and the tent peg in his temple.

Nehemiah 7

Knocking off another long chapter. The numbers here do not agree with those in Ezra 2. One can only imagine the process, the copying, the registration, the counting, and so on. How many variations of a document happen today?  There are many differences: in counts, names, phrasing, and spellings, additional lines and deletions. But one list is clearly related to the other. The music of verse 6 is not the same as verse 1 of Ezra, but verse 7 agrees with verse 2 of Ezra 2. Divergences magnify beginning at verse 23. Comparing with the music is difficult for the eye. If they were sung together, the differences would be obvious.

3 And I said to them, let the gates of Jerusalem not be opened until the sun is warm, and while they were standing by, let them put trunk limbs in the gateways and hold them fast,
and have the inhabitants of Jerusalem stand as guards, each in his watch and each in front of his house.
