1 Kings 3

A week off... And we begin with the parallel to 2 Chronicles 1 (though it is quite different) and the episode of the two newborns. There must be an analogy here.

There is clearly a 'problem' or 'opportunity' with having multiple choices for English glosses. I am sure you already noticed. I get to make the choice even in my obtuse English, which gloss to choose. I have not rendered חכם followed by בין the same way every time these stems occur in sequence. Sometimes it is wise or wisdom with discernment, or acumen, or understanding, sometimes shrewd or shrewdness with the same choices. So beware. The choice of the same gloss is more important in the poetic books than in the prose books, or when a sounds-like shape of the text needs to be preserved (e.g. verse 12b below: that like you, there has not been before you, and after you, neither will one arise like you).

Again it is good that I did poetry first. The rules can be relaxed a little for prose.

1 Kings 3 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh the king of Egypt.
And he took Pharaoh's daughter and brought her to the city of David till he finished building his house, and the house of Yahweh, and the rampart of Jerusalem round about.

39
2 B But the people sacrificed on the high places,
for a house to the name of Yahweh had not yet been built in those days.
3e 4B 9
16
3 And Solomon loved Yahweh, walking in the statutes of David his father,
but on the high places he sacrificed and burnt incense.
3e 4C 20
12
4 And the king went towards Gibeon to sacrifice there, for this is the great high place.
A thousand burnt offerings Solomon offered up on that altar.
3e 4C 21
17
5 In Gibeon, Yahweh appeared to Solomon in a dream by night,
and God said, Ask what I will give you?
3c 4B 18
12
6 And Solomon said, You yourself have done with your servant David, my father, great kindness, such that he walked in your presence in truth and in righteousness and in uprightness of heart with you,
and you kept for him this great kindness and you gave to him a son to sit on his throne as on this day.
3c 4C 46
27
7 And now, Yahweh, my God, you yourself have made your servant king instead of David, my father,
and I am a lesser lad. I do not know how to go out or to come in.
3e 4B 23
14
8 And your servant is in the midst of your people that you have chosen,
a people abundant that will not be apportioned or counted for abundance.
3c 4B 13
14
9 So give to your servant a heart to hear, to judge your people, acumen to discern good from evil,
for who is able to judge this your glorious people.
3e 4C 24
14
10 And it was good, the word in the eyes of the Lord,
that Solomon had asked this word.
3e 4C 12
12
11 And God said to him, In that you have asked this word, and you did not ask for yourself many days, and you did not ask for yourself riches, and you did not ask for the throat of your enemies,
but you asked for yourself acumen to hear judgment.
3c 4C 49
13
12 Behold, I have done according to your word.
Behold, I have given to you a heart shrewd and discerning, that like you, there has not been before you, and after you, neither will one arise like you.
3e 4C 9
34
13 And moreover what you did not ask, I have given to you, both riches and glory,
that there will not be like you, any among sovereigns, all your days.
3d 4C 17
15
14 And if you will walk in my ways to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David your father walked,
then I will prolong your days.
3e 4C 25
9
15 And Solomon awoke and behold, a dream.
And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and he offered up burnt offerings, and he made peace offerings, and he made a party for all his servants.
3e 4C 11
41
16 B Then came two women, harlots, to the king,
and they stood before him.
3d 4B 14
8
17 And the first woman said, O my lord, I and this woman were settled in one house,
and I gave birth with her in the house.
3e 4C 28
8
18 And it was on the third day after I gave birth that she gave birth, even this woman,
and we were together. There was no stranger with us in the house, except we two, in the house.
3e 4C 19
25
19 And the child of this woman died in the night,
when she lay down over it.
3d 4A 11
6
20 And she arose in the midst of the night, and took my child from next to me while your maidservant was asleep, and had it lie down in her embrace,
and her dead child she had lie down in my embrace.
3c 4B 32
12
21 And I arose in the morning to suckle my child, and behold it had died,
but I understood it in the morning, and behold it was not my child which I had given birth to.
3d 4C 16
21
22 And the other woman said, No, for my child is the living, and your child the one who died. But this said, No, for your child is the one who died, and my child is the living.
And they were speaking in the presence of the king.
3e 4C 35
9
23 And the king said, This said, This is my child, the living, and your child is the one who died,
but this said, No, for your child is the one who died, and my child is the living.
3e 4C 19
15
24 And the king said, Take a sword for me,
and they brought the sword before the king.
3e 4B 10
12
25 And the king said, Part the living newborn in two,
and give half to one and half to the other.
3d 4C 17
17
26 And the woman whose child was the living said to the king, for her compassion was fevered over her child, and she said, O my lord, give her the living newborn. Let it not be put to death.
But this said, Neither mine nor yours let it be. Part it.
3d 4B 51
15
27 And the king answered and he said, Give her the living newborn, and let it not be put to death.
She is its mother.
3e 4B 26
3
28 And all Israel heard the judgment that the king had judged, and they feared from the presence of the king,
for they saw that it was the shrewdness of God within him to do judgment.
