Isaiah 62

I counted the chapters remaining in each book and it is clear that Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Genesis are lagging behind. So to get some respite from purity laws, I thought these three should catch up a bit. So here's a start with Isaiah 62, reflecting back on the promises of Isaiah 40. Isaiah 62:11b and 40:10b are the only two verses with this particular phrasing.

סקל is commonly used with respect to stoning people. It is very strange to see it in this triumphant context. It appears to mean something related to throwing stones, but hear it is perhaps removing them from the highway. In Isaiah 5:2 it is used to describe the fencing in of the vineyard. These are the only two uses in the entire later prophetic corpus.

1 For the sake of Zion I will not be calm, and for the sake of Jerusalem, I will not be quiet,
until her righteousness comes forth as illumination, and her salvation as a torch that is kindled.

2 And nations will see your righteousness, and all sovereigns, your glory,
and he will acclaim for you a new name that the mouth of Yahweh will distinctly say.

3 You will be a crown of adornment in the hand of Yahweh,
and a royal turban in the palm of your God.

4 No longer will it be said of you, Forsaken, and of your land, no longer will it be said, Desolate, for you will be called My Delight is in Her, and your land Married,
for Yahweh is delighted in you, and your land will be married.

5 For a young man marries a virgin. Your children will marry you.
A bridegroom joys over a bride. Your God will joy over you.

6 On your ramparts, Jerusalem, I have conscripted guardians. All the day long and all the night long continually they will not be calm.
You who remember Yahweh, do not be mute for yourselves.

10 Pass beyond, pass beyond into the gates. Face the way of the people.
Extol, extol the highway. Jettison stones. Lift high a standard over the peoples.

11 Behold, Yahweh has broadcast to the extremity of the earth, Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold, your salvation comes.
Behold, his wages are with him and his work in his presence.

12 And they will call them, the people of holiness, the redeemed of Yahweh,
and you will be called, Searched out, a city not forsaken.
